My Dad and me used to cut an old ladies lawns with a Ransomes push mower a very good quality machine. I've just started constrution of a 1926 Ransome threshing drum in 2" scale.
When you mention Pierce farm machinery- that sure does bring back memories. A few years back I visited the agricultural museum in Johnstown Castle estate. there is a vast amount of Pierce equipment on display there, when one looks at the intricate castings in most of these machines, it makes me very sad and also angry,. because these skills are lost forever . You may hear a lot about modern farm machinery production in Ireland, when you drill down into this production it does not amount to much The steel is imported, the bearings are imported the shafting is imported, gear boxes all imported . Now do you see what I mean, the only Irish component is some Labour.
Yes I understand your sentiments.. And when u look at the UK now, once the world leader in steel production, have closed down their last foundry. Its just a reflection of modern production and cost cutting. It really is a shame. Thanks for watching 👍
Alan, thanks for filling in the gaps in my knowledge about RSJ. I happened to find them myself, only in the early 80's when I happened to be sent there as a print engineer to repair their print machines. It was the biggest factory complex I'd ever seen at the time. It was massive, it stood overlooking the locality (Nacton) and was called Nacton Works, and the whole of Ipswich, and the sign must have been massive, as it could be seen for miles. It still stands out in my memory to this day! Thanks to being there, got me interested in Ag Engineering: which obviously still pervades my life today! Regards Ian.
Just picked up on this video, there's no mention of Dowdeswell whom bought the Ransomes plough bodies and wearing parts to fit Dowdeswell ploughs in the seventies and eighties. Later taking over Some of Ransomes facilities along with Howard. Also Ransomes combines I find interesting memories from my childhood of one harvesting our corn.
@grahamkelland Thanks, Graham. It's hard to include everything in a 30-minute video, I'm well familiar with the dealings between both companies. I have a video planned on Dowdeswell. It will include the buy-out and other interesting history in relation to both companies. Thanks for watching 👍
A great video Alan, my Dad used to plough with an International 523 in the 1970's with a single furrow Ransome plough, with me sat on a hessian bag on the battery next to him. Talking of IH, have you managed to film a video on the World Series tractors of Doncaster and the Bradford tractors?. Finally a question for your next video......did you ever buy a CB Radio for your tractor on road runs. cheers Dave , North Lincolnshire🙂.
@m0ogy No, I didn't get one yet, Dave. I'll probably get one in January, I'd say. I'll chat with you for recommendations before that. The IH World Series video is a work in progress. Info is limited surprisingly, but I'm getting there 👍
Very informative video thanks. We had a two row potato digger back in the late eighties, it was fine but it created a load of work with hand picking! Would have sold a fair few Ransomes pitman woods, sections and fingers back as a teenager in the local farm machinery store also. Pierce, there was a video on TH-cam about the Pierce company that I remember watching a few years ago. Had a pierce turnip chopper that we used to chop spuds in, fortunately it had an electric motor 😊.
Some history there Alan. I have a 2 furrow ransomes plough, did a small bit of vintage ploughing with it behind a diesel ferguson 20 many years ago. Well rated plough for their day, probably gave the ferguson plough a good run for their money. Whats the connection between ransomes and Dowdeswell Alan. I know they made a lot of the early Dowdeswell plough parts including the ucn boards?? Thanks.
@eamondempsey3018 Thanks, Eamon. Yes, there was a considerable amount of hours researching it alright 🙈 I'll get back to you on the connection with Dowdeswell 👍
@@AgrimotiveFarmMachineryno need to go back looking up stuff, just wondered if you had come across anything in your research. I think the early Dowdeswell ploughs were even painted ransomes blue.
No mention of the combines they built Alan, the old 902 Crusader Cavalier etc, I always have a liken to these machines, was there some tie up with Ford in relation to their combines ? Great informative Video as always 👍
@@alanpayn8699 They got a brief mention.. The video was more a history of the company in general rather than individual machines.. I'll get to that in due course. Thanks for watching 👍
My grandfather who farmed in Kilkenny in the early 1900 purchased a Ransome traction engine and Ransome threshing mill which I believe cost a lot of money at the time , the engine £1000 the mill i dont know
You did a fair bit of research for that video. well done.

Mighty stuff Alan, great information, as always, Thank You👍🙏

Good video Alan, great history. Did not know ransoms was such an old company.👍👍
@FlyingFergyMan Thanks, Cathal. Very old company indeed. I had to go to the well to get good info on the early days
Apart from slight sound mishap at the start great video. Didn't know Ransomes built first lawnmover. Have a good holiday.
