I live, eat and breathe fly fishing and have for 25+ years! In fact, if I wasn't married, with children and a mortgage, I would live out of the back of my Tacoma and be a trout bum! Yes I've been that annoying dry fly guy, a euro nympher and fishing nothing but wet flies! But for the past 5 years, I've fished nothing but streamers and had a blast! I would not recommend this approach for everyone and in fact after one year of streamer fishing I nearly quit. What I didn't expect was such a steep learning curve, hell I just expected to throw a giant streamer and catch monster fish. Well it doesn't work that way.
So my goal is simply to help you become a better streamer fisherman. I'll share personal favorite flies, I'm not selling any materials, so these are my tried and true patterns, no bull! My set-up from the rod to the fly and most importantly how I fish them!
Follow me on instagram @trouttornado and DM me with questions or leave comments here! I hope you enjoy and learn lots!

A Fishing Knot: Tie Mono or Braid to Bite Tippet
มุมมอง 2.6K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
When you fish for pike, walleye, bluefish, musky, barracuda- any fish in fresh or salt with teeth... You need bite tippet, or steel leaders to keep from getting bitten off! I am not a fan of using big clunky leaders, and for more than 25 years I've been using the Hesse knot. It's a simple, small, seamless connection between steel, bite tippet, monofilament or braided line! In my humble opinion,...

Fly Tying: A simple, highly productive streamer - The Food Baby

The Food Baby is a simple UV resin fly that crushes trout, smallmouth, stripers and panfish! The reason is simple.. big fish eat small fish and the Food Baby imitates them perfectly. I believe the triggers are the oversized eyes, which young fish typically have and that fat translucent belly. Combined with the marabou overwing you really get a simple fly that looks amazing in and out of the wat...

Hi. Thanks for the video. Love your patterns and tutorials. What float tube were you using at the start of this video? I'm curious as I'm looking for a tube/ craft that has oars. Thanks
It's a Watermaster, Kodiak... great boat! Let me know if you have other questions.
@TroutTornado awesome thanks for letting me know. Are you happy with it? I've got a float tube but it doesn't have oars so I'm looking at other options. Appreciate your input
I absolutely love it, it's been a game changer for me. Really opened up miles of water and helped with stealth!
Your 3/4 of an inch is so much longer than mine! Good looking fly though!
Math was never my strong suit, better to go long anyway! :) I caught that mistake too and put a note in the video (@15:04) after I measured it and it was 1 3/4"! Enjoy tying it!
Was baffled at first on tying, but awesome pattern & simplistic tying, attaching the rear hook is similar to the Graboid Leech by Jonathan Farmer (OPST) & can if needed be replaced,my area we're only allowed 1 hook & can see it on a 27 mm shank with the rear trailer hook, tight lines 🤙
I understand your initial confusion with the tying process, but I'm glad you found the pattern and tying method to be awesome and simplistic in the end. I love the guys at OPST, it's cool that you noticed similarities to the Graboid Leech pattern, particularly in how the rear hook is attached. That's also why I reference Jerry French in the video, I think he was a disciple of OSPT as well. Your idea of using a 27 mm shank with a rear trailer hook sounds like a sweet modification that will work well! Tight lines to you as well, and I hope your adapted version of this pattern brings you success on the water.
Easy to cast with 5’ + spacing……weed must be legal in your state, eh?
Don't knock it, till you try it! Two flies are better than one!
Awesome content, i will not expend more money in fly fishing , one rig for different fish, nice one ,
Thank you. It's easy to get caught up in a rod for this and that! Really we only need a few to be successful! Diversity in lines is really the key! Good luck!
thanks, was trying to make a contraption with a space heater, ironing board, and other stuff will simply get this and instead lol
This stupid contraption works awesome and makes me laugh every time I use it!
Can i use this set-up for steelhead fishing?
I would not recommend the three-weight for steelhead fishing. I would step up to a four or five weight... Then you'd be all set for steelhead!!
Is this thesame set-up, when you catch that carp?
And what is the specic name of your reel?
No, I use a seven weight 10 ft for the carp.
No, I use a 20-year-old 10 ft 7 weight from Loomis.
Nice
Thanks
How do you like that hmh? Looks a like a killer vise.
Sold my Dyna King so I could get the HMH. So glad I did, can tie anything from a size 22 to a 2/0+! My only complaint is that the jaws of the tip of the vice are a little soft, and have deformed a little bit.
Glad to see you back with the tying videos man! Awesome looking fly!
Thank you, so glad you like them!
Awsome❤
Thanks!
Hey man, getting ready for my first saltwater trip. What's your opinion on necessary casting distance? Quite comfortable double hauling and creating tight loops out to above 70-75 ft, can't go much past there with good consistency. Enough?
You'll have absolutely no troubles with that length of a cast! Enjoy and good luck!! Reach out to me on Instagram if you have other questions.
@@TroutTornado Thank you so much!!!
Glad to see your videos again
Thanks! I only share when I have some new and interesting flies to share! 😃
My fly was down and I caught two strippers😂
Well, that'd be interesting!! 🤣🤣
Back at it and sharing the wealth! Great instructions and fly. Cheers!
Thanks! I only share flies that catch fish!
Thats a nice tie. Question, how do you like that HMH vise? It looks really nice and sturdy.
I'm thinking of buying a new one, something similar to the HMH, any tips? I have an Apex Vise Anvil, but the jaw has already started to jam.
I really like it, overall I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Pro's holds all hook sizes from a 2/0 to a 20! Once you get it clamped down, hooks don't move, great rotation, smooth as silk! Con's you really need to crank down on the hook, and leverage the dial to make it hold (but once you do it's great). Also the jaws aren't 100% immune to damage from hooks... the jaws are ever so slightly damaged from me cranking down on the hooks.
Consecrated forever Granny💓
That's funny, great comment!! 😅😅
Thanks for sharing this bud. Really solid quality video and instruction.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello everyone, does anyone have a tip on a sample for extra cloudy water? Bian, do you use these for very cloudy water? Well thank you
Black is always a really good color to use in off color water! Good luck!
@@TroutTornado I greet you. Super classic answer, black is already viewed. I use the Fire Tiger wobbler from Rapala for spinning, but the CLN works better here. I tried tying it as a streamer, my colleague was excited, but it doesn't work. Maybe with your new method it will finally change. tied CLN color from Rapala with a red head. An ordinary Red Head can please rainbow trout on a bite, like a summer streamer...
I started tying with steelhead flies and intruders. So much emphasis on supporting materials to give a large profile. I have a hard time having confidence in sparse streamers not just collapsing in the current. What is your take on that?
Think of water as an ingredient in the fly, with water, and sparse materials comes movement and life. Also with less materials comes translucency, so the fly does not look solid against the sky. Remember baitfish are camouflaged so they dont get eaten.
If you’d like to use one of the ends as a tag end is that a problem, and if not or so which end should you use as the tag? Many thanks!
great question, you could use one of the tags and if you did it would be the heavier test..
After a long time and searching for materials in Europe, I came to the conclusion. I can't buy your GLO BUGS BLING in Europe. It would be ideal... Here I bought EGG YARN from Wapsi, which mixes well with your brush, but the colors were not yours. I bought the Egg Pattern material from McFLYFOAM and it combs through the brush absolutely badly. When you stretch it back, the whole thing twists and deforms. I still haven't figured out how to help myself quickly. You had to buy a lot of materials before you figured out what is perfect for your streamer...it sure looks like it's in the store...I know it too. well thank you Has anyone tried with arctic fox?
you could use rams wool
Looks like a non slip loop but you didn't go back through the first granny knot. Is this way better?
love this knot, hope you enjoy it too!
Took me a little to remember, but now it is my go to knot !!!
so glad to hear that you love it too!
Beautiful job
Thank you! Cheers!
neat idea for the marabou stacker/holder
No need to spend $25 on something that you can make from leftover packaging. Love that thing and still use it today!
I have been looking for the best loop knot for me to do. This is the easiest of all the loop knots. Thanks!
I'm so glad you like it, it's been a staple of mine for years. Works great, yet to fail!
Love this fly. Re. the lead wire, I had trouble folding it the way you do. Instead, I cut 2 inches of lead, fold it 4 times twist it like rope and then I can control it to stay underneath the hook. I have the feeling this would also work during a worm hatch. I have had great luck with your micro closure. Thanks
That's a great idea! Yeah the micro clouser is one of my favorites too! Works well on striped bass, walleye, smallmouth, trout... really anything that swims!
Nice fly. Seems like a modification on a Murdich Minnow
Glad you like the fly!
Great fly, terrible music
Lol! I've changed my music choices making it easier to enjoy and tried to reduce the volume too!
Thank you! I’ve completely switched over, this knot is so much easier and I don’t think I’ll have to keep coming back to a TH-cam video to remind myself how to do it.
So glad to hear that! My personal favorite!!
Great instruction
Thank you! So much fun to fish as well!!
fire.
Thanks man! It's such a fun fly to fish!!!
Great flys! Can’t wait to tie some up and try them out. Your videos are really good too. Thanks for all the materials used etc.
Thanks! I only share flies I have caught lots of fish on and try to make the videos easy, step by step!! Enjoy!!
I really love your patterns. All of them are pretty easy to duplicate.
Thanks, I really try to only post flies that are productive and easy to tie!
Hello friend, very nice to see you. Where are you ? 🗯🗯
Thanks for visiting
That's a beautiful little streamer. I wish I could see it swim.
I usually do swim test for this one I didn't, sorry.
I like it!!
Me 2 and more importantly the fish do too! 🎣🎣
Who makes that dubbing brush table?
Unfortunately the manufacturer doesn't exist anymore, any dubbing brush table will work.
simpler and easier to tie compared to blood knot....seems to be strong too.....will try it on the river.....
Oh practice it at home; then when you get to the river it will be so simple! Enjoy!!
Great tie. Agreed. Keep 'em sparse!
Thank you! They just love them!
Looks like an all-star pattern to me. I'll give this one a go. Excellent tying techniques and instructions.
Thanks this pattern is $$$ enjoy!
I've been fly fishing for CARP since the 1970's here in Santa Barbara and Goleta slew, Carpenteria and many places that I will not mention!!!! and when I lived in Glendale when I had to leave home for school and work down there!!! the LA River was and still is fantastic for fly fishing for carp!! and I must say I am truly excited about your fly I just purchased some materials down at Marriott's and I'm gonna tie a variety!! GREAT TIE......and I've been purchasing materials from FTD for years and that PRIVATE STASH DUBBING iS MY FAVORITE!! the Mad Scientist sent me a sample a number of years ago and its all GREAT...
Thank you! I'm a huge fan of this pattern, simple, versatile and light on the drop! Oooohhhh so good! FTD has amazing materials at such a reasonable price which makes me feel like buying more! 😁 Enjoy the fly, I know you'll find success!
Is there a difference between shimmerbou and flashabou
Great question, YES flashabou more pliable and shimmerbou is stiffer. At the end of the day you could tie this pattern with any sort of metallic flash material, the nice thing about shimmerbou is that it maintains its shape in and out of the water.
Thank you for your advice and videos.
Always a pleasure!!
Hi Brian, love your videos. Can you please send me a link as to where I can get the just add water 5 inch bronze back brush ? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Thank you , and keep up the great videos !!

Thank you ! @@TroutTornado
Man, you know how to tie!!!
Thanks Steve! 😁
Love this pattern and how you used synthetics to tie sparse but yet give a full appearance. Most articulated flies are tied too dense. I am going to tie this pattern for Kentucky Lake!!!!
You're going to love it's movement and fish catching abilities! One of my favorite flies!!
Materials list please.
You can find it either in the description or within the first 30 seconds of the video.
Would you ever use circle hooks in your patterns?
No, I've never had good luck with circle hooks. I have used barbless hooks with great success!
