    One of the most important things with black and white photography is the greyscale. I see so many horrible greyscales theses days that look so artificial, unnatural and what I would call "digital plastic" with extremely flat midtones and highlights too close to "blown out" or just simply blown out. This is an exposure issue AND a post production issue. Another BIG problem is the overuse of the red filter which give white people ghost-white skin! HORRIBLE! As a standard, red filter is only for use in landscape /nature photography OR in controlled studio environment portraits /scenes. It just does NOT work for any kind of people photography in natural light in normal circumstances.

    A great way to describe the 40mm lens. I did event photography including weddings for a number of years and while i can't say it's any thing like steet photography because at an event people have expectations of being photographed, many of the same focal lengths are used, you have to capture the interaction of the guests at times with their knowledge and other times without, you have to be aware of how light and shadows influence a scene and how to use it to your advantage, and you still have to make people comfortable with what you're doing. On Monday of this coming week i will travel to the Eastern Shores of Virginia, i will be staying on Chincoteague Island to photograph the wild life and different sea birds, the island is a watermans community and one of my cameras will be a Nikon ZF with a variety of prime lens, one being a Voightlander 40mm f1.2. This is the first time I will be using both the camera and lens so it should be an interesting trip.

    Doriyan, help! I am on the verge of plunking down for the Voigtlander 27mm f2 for the small form and image beauty - but all these 18f2 (and 16f2.8 and xf 27 f2.8) videos have been clobbering me, and now you’re telling me this has a character look like a voigtlander or 35f1.4 plus autofocus! Sure, slow loud ancient autofocus, but I was considering NO autofocus so what’s it to me how old it is! Acccck decisions! I’m probably going with the vg 27 f2 for the light and the focal length but wow this video is killing me! Anyway thanks and keep on making art, love to see it.

    I shoot mostly street on an A7Riii with a Sony 50mm prime, and very rarely find myself wanting to use auto focus. I'm much happier setting my focus distance & mentally trying to measure the distance and gauge when to take a shot, rather than hoping & praying the (already slow) auto focus gets me there. But then even in settings where I could switch to auto focus I usually don't see a good reason to. Do I scroll through a menu to turn a setting on that I'm gonna turn off immediately afterwards anyway, or do I... turn the damn focus ring? (and even when the focus is a little soft, I remind myself that, like Henri Cartier Bresson said, "sharpness is a bourgeois concept," before crying myself to sleep)

    Our attitudes towards creative ownership are tied to an exploitative market, and we end up conflating the evil of the latter to be something that's evil about creativity. When ideas are supposedly owned by individuals and their efforts, then creativity involves stealing. It is how the brain learns.

    Coming to this 3 years later, but really liked your explanations. A lot to absorb here. I really like how you put it. My prime of choice is a 35. I *did* just grab a 17-70 to see if it scratches my occasional "zoom in" need. But I *feel* like it'll be far less used compared to my 35. Before making that purchase, I hovered over the 50 for quite a while. I think I'm happy to stay at 35 OR use a zoom (depending on the project/plan). :)

But I will follow your advice going between 28mm, which will capture more "thick action" shots, and 35mm, which will get more specific. But to your point, both win depending on what story you tell and shooting style. Doriyan, you are truly talented! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and making this video, cheers.

  • @MonerLaine

    I've always thought that it was a load of crap, in my mind art is a gigantic library from which we can all borrow whatever we want and then everything we do will be borrowed to built upon whether it's thru emulation or deconstruction. The only way to steal would be to lock it up in a way in which no one else can tocuh it anymore, akin to what disney does with it's properties and everything they've touched. That's not only anti ethical but also against the spirit of creation by itself. But hey people like to quote picasso, usually without knowing anything about picasso. If they went and quote some of the other things picasso said they would probably go to jail kek

    • @dopaminecloud
      @dopaminecloud หลายเดือนก่อน

      if you borrow, you have to return it, if you steal you keep it so far the visual imagery none of it makes sense in regards to ideas other than the truth that you take them and the usage of steal implies that doing so is part of creativity whether you can get permission or not, which i agree with

    I want to say thanks a lot. I think I learned something about photography style being beyond shooting with a certain film simulation or focal length lens. One more question, does it make sense to have both lenses? A lot of people recommend 35/85 as a 2 lens combo if you don't want to collect two many lenses. 85mm kind of gives you the ability to isolate a single detail even more and a 35mm gives you an opportunity to capture more in the frame or gives you the opportunity to capture a scene in a tight space, where you wouldn't be able to with a 50mm.
