Why I Recommend the Fujifilm XE4 Over the X100V

  • The Fujifilm X-E4 and X100v are two of the most popular cameras on the market. You can't go wrong with either, but it's not that simple...
    Fujifilm X-E4, 27mm 2.8, and 33mm 1.4 are loaner copies provided by Fujifilm. All opinions are my own.

    To me, X-E4 + XF 35mm f/1.4 + XF 16mm f/2.8 = EVERYTHING!! When the weight of my camera bag is less than 1.5kg(+phone + key string + a book), I feel light-hearted with a lot of creativity in mind. I constantly think about constructions of lights and shadows, instead of gears and $$$.

      I have been using the exact same lenses with my x-e4 and I really love this kit. I have not sold my x100v though. I still use it from time to time and I love it for more documentary style stuff and just handing it to friends for a couple of hours to take photos have made them fall in love with the thing.

    Yeah, that was my point when I bought the X-E4. Is so incredibly versatile. I started with the 27 mm 2.8 and now I add a XF 16-80mm and is still fun to shoot. The only defect is the zero stabilisation if you want to shoot video outside. I'm thinking in the future to buy or a X-T5 or X-S20 for those purposes but for the moment, since I'm more focused on photography, I'm super happy with it.

    Hiya, I have just found your channel and I am enjoying your videos. I still use the original Fuji X100, one of my favourite features is the leaf shutter and built in flash combo for fill light for outdoor portraits. Often at the flash set a stop below the main exposure, it just picks up shadows, adds a catchlight to eyes and adds texture to clothing. The x100 is used when my XT1 stays at home.

    I bought the X100V and after a while I realized the focal lenght wasn't my cup of tea. It's too middle of the ground/boring for me. I sold it and bought an XE4 and I can put a Laowa 9mm on it for landscapes or the Fuji 90mm f2 on it for portraits and the cinematic look of that lens or the dramatic look of an ultra wide landscape are amazing. Most of the time what's on my XE4 is the magical 35mm f1.4. I wanted to love the X100V so much, and loved mostly everything about it except the most important thing, the focal lenght.

    Good points here. I’ve been “x100v only” for some two years. I fooled around with the TCL as that 50mm itch kept teasing me. It’s nice for what it is. But I ended up getting a “proper x-e4” with a 35mm f2 - and what can I say: the x-e4 is 90% of the camera the x100v is. And I disagree: I still find the x100v to feel more premium. Still, what a great little camera the xe4 is. I ended up keeping both. They make a wonderful couple with mostly similar controls. But I see the xe4 as a sidekick to the x100v rather than the other way round. And that’s a great place to be in.

      How does. the x100v feel more premium? What is the XE-4 lacking?

    • @franzst.664
      @franzst.664 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mihaibolboceanu9347 the x100v has a bit more heft to it, it feels more dense as a package. The xe4 is almost hollow, super light. Which is cool from a weight perspective but it is a bit like a toy. Also, the x100v has proper aluminium with sharp edges on the top plate. It feels colder to the touch, i.e. more like proper metal. The xe4 has a (I think) magesium alloy frame, again: feels more plasticy. Then, there are the control wheels and buttons - all of which are a bit more loose and don't click as nicely. All this adds up to a significantly less premium feeling camera - and none of this comes across on video or pictures. Only when you touch it. That all being said: The xe4 is still great. But if you have both side by side, you probably always grab the x100v. (I did not mention the viewfinder - it is considerably better on the x100v. I am referring to the electronic one. 3 million dots vs. only 2 million dots and smaller on the xe4). Again, the xe4 is a great little camera, huge punch in a tiny package but it is NOT an x100v with exchangeable lenses. (that is the xpro3 - which is huge and expensive, so there is that). Hope this helps.

    Here's something I can't understand: everyone loves the X100V (and rightly so), calling it a premium camera. Whereas people call the Canon RP an entry-level camera with terrible dynamic range when its dynamic range is actually superior to the X100V's and it has equivalent features. Truth is: they're both amazing cameras. And so is the X-E4. Sure there are cameras that do certain things better like burst rate, IS or 4K, but many people don't need these features at all. We're being spoiled with excellent options these days. So I appreciate videos that bring forward affordable cameras and point out that they're excellent options too. That extra money you're saving is not nothing.

    • @doriyancoleman

      i’m not too familiar with the RP, but i definitely agree in the idea that people exalt certain cameras and fully dismiss others, when they’re 90% similar.

    I don’t think they are comparable cameras, the differences are clear. Yes you can make the xe4 feel like an x100v but critically speaking you can’t fully. The 23 on the x100 is the better lens, it’s also smaller, less protruding, better at close focus. The results are very similar for most purposes though, yes taking general IQ. With the leaf shutter and ND filter, it’s out there on it’s own. The amazing thing about the x100 series or Leica Q2 style is that it has a simplicity, a restriction etc that makes you look at photography differently. An interchangeable camera is obviously the most versatile etc but the x100 doesn’t want to be the xe4 or any interchangeable.

    • @doriyancoleman
      @doriyancoleman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i see where you’re coming from, and agree of the power of the simplicity part.
      in many ways it’s not so much about making the x-e4 feel like an x100v, as it is having a compact body that also gives you access to great image quality, if one doesn’t see too much value in the extra features of the x100v.
      simplifying your process to a 35 or 50 would definitely get you the similar results, but true, they definitely aren’t the same camera!

    speaking as an owner of the X100V, there's an awful lot to be said for a fixed lens camera when walking around for extended periods of time in hot/warm conditions. The x100v lens is miles above that lens and the reason I went with the 100v. Matter of fact I was tempted after 20 years shooting 4/3 to m4/3 to switch to fuji but I found there lenses quite lacking all around from image quality to weather sealing compared to olympus pro lenses. It's almost like the x100v lens being so damn sharp was made by leica it's so good.
    90 percent of the time I just use my 100v and if I'm going to a concert or photo shoot outside I'll grab my 100mm equivalent lens and the 100v. And my 35mm equivalent 1.2 pro lens for times when i cant shoot flash indoors. That leaf shutter is so fantastic for shooting in direct sunlight I can't tell you how many times it's been a God sent. Matter of fact this camera is so good I'm considering another while keeping the 28mm adapter on it permanently.

      @@doriyancoleman no problem, but you should check out his video on how terrible the resolving power is for that lens.

      used it for years of various bodies, sold a large print made with it, saying it’s horrible is simply incorrect

    I do not like the XE4. It is the pasm thing. I am looking for an XE3. Almost the same thing as the XE4 but cheaper. Is there that much of a difference between the 3 & 4?
    Have an X100 S & T. No need for newer models. No need to spend any more money on new bodies. Lord knows I have a large enough collection of Fiji bodies.

      i’m not too familiar with the x-e3 so i can’t say for sure, but also the x-e4 doesn’t have a PASM!
      have always wanted to try the older x100 bodies, have heard (and seen) great things with the previous sensors

    Simple answer: you gonna get sick af of that 23mm f2 just like I did, sold my x100v, bought an XE-4 with the pancake and the 33mm f1.4 and I’m super excited with an actual real authentic start to my lens collection

      @@doriyancoleman it’s honestly really good on the X100V, I think I would never get the new 23mm f1.4, I would just get another x100 for that focal length 😂 my next lens will be the 18mm f1.4
