    The fifty is perfect for anything outdoors. Its been my standard choice for 25 years.

    Hey Doriyan, I think the 50mm Lens is a very special optics. Not because it's considered the standard Frame, no. For me, this Frame requires real skill to use and to achieve a beautiful Frame. It's a refined way of seeing the subject and deciding how much context around the subject to include or not. This makes it difficult to craft with but so worth it. It forces me to participate with the scene /subject, it's a dance in the visual conversation to achieve the exact frame I desire. One step forwards, two steps back, bending my knees, zooming with my feet. All of this physical participation is required when using this Lens. Another great video, thanks, Mike

    While 50 shows our natural vision with the right amount of compression giving that "natural look", I like 35 more which favors the background more (but not too much). It has that look as if the background is "hugging" the subject creating more of the subject to background relationship and story. It just feels like you're there in that moment. Overall a nice focal length to show candid and street type of photographs (imo).

    Nice to see you Doriyan, one prime lens is a great exercise, lately I’ve been doing a lot of walking around with the XF33 f/1.4 on the X-T4 (it really makes you look for the shot), it brings me back (late 70’s) to my photography school days in NYC with an Olympus OM-1 and the 50mm f/1.4

      You as well! Can definitely agree that going out with one lens really helps you focus and dial in on perspective.

    I'm just warming up to 50mm (equiv) in my photography. I swear I used an Olympus OM-2S with a 50mm/f1.8 as a teen a million years ago and liked it. But coming back to photography after a multi-decade break in my late 50s I tended to gravitate toward 22-28mm (equiv). This was a very helpful video to help me in my thinking about 50mm (equiv). Thanks!

    Im in love with my compact 40 from Sony, but 50 would be my 2nd choice and we have 2 doozies come out in last 8 months

    Thanks Doriyan, good points. My first choice for a walk around at car shows and similar events is my 6D classic with either the 40 F2.8 or the 50 F1.8 depending on the venue. So light and easy to carry, plus my 75 year old eyes struggle for some reason with EVFs when shooting more quickly. Maybe I'm just so used to OVFs. I do use mirrorless, but mainly for "slower" work.

    I use 50mm on apsc for street, people say zoom with your feet using a prime and with a 35mm you have to walk towards but with 50 you walk away creating a more comfortable experience for me and less noticed by the subject, cheers for the vids my dude and hello from Liverpool UK

    My favorite lens is a 55mm, just feels right for me
    I prefer steping back when needed compared to getting closer when using a 35mm

    50mm has always felt too tight for me. I’ll definitely give it a try tho but right now I shoot mostly 35 and I’m in the process of getting either a 28mm or 24mm

    • @doriyancoleman
      @doriyancoleman  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s fair, I think you’ll like 28mm 🤝

    One of mentors for photography that I know keeps on urging me to get a 50 mm lense with a f of 1.8
    He has been calling that lense a nifty fifty

    • @doriyancoleman
      @doriyancoleman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He’s leading you in the right direction! “Nifty 50’s” are affordable, typically compact 50mm equivalents with a (usually) 1.8 aperture.

    40-50 is definitely the sweet spot for shooting what I see as I see it. Similarly though, I think 28mm is perfect for capturing what my inner peripheral vision sees

    I like the 75-90 focal length. I feels intimate to me. I love the Viltrox 85 but it soo big I don't take it as much.

  • @WaywardAce

    I love 50mm because I don’t have to crop much at all ….. 35 and wider = way too much clutter ….. way easier for me to compose around the edges with a 50 ….. photos shot on a 50 seem to be more composed like a painting than a snapshot

    I'm using 50mm f/1.2, and it weighs 950 g (2.09 lb). My back starts aching on the 2nd hour of the walk, especially when I can't find benches or bus stops to rest 👴🏽

    Interestingly, I thought I was a 35mm shooter until I analyzed my photo library and what focal lengths I tend to use. I was surprised that more of my shots were right around 50mm (48-53mm) than 35mm (32-37mm) in a full frame field of view. I recently purchased a new camera with both a 35mm and 50mm prime lens. I have been feeling the 50mm is more natural for me than the 35mm for some reason with camera system.
    As usual, great content!

    I know from my much-loved 16-55mm crop (24-84mm FF equivalent) that I do shoot in the mid-range. But yeah my new 33mm crop (50mm FF equivalent) is still a struggle.
    I know I'll learn to love it, though. The results feel simplified and gimmick-free, excluding the temptations of heavy bokeh or wide-angle drama. I'm mainly about photographing people in context and I feel like I have to work harder to get compositions with a wow factor using the 50mm equivalent, but I want that challenge.
