Pants to Fight The Patriarchy (I made jeans with 25 pockets!)
I demand better pockets. If big fashion won't give them to me, I'll make them myself. This was my first time making jeans and definitely my most technically challenging sewing project to date. But it was so much fun! Come hang out, it really is quite silly.

I Spent 16 Days Building a Miniature Fantasy House Lamp

Ooh wee this is one of those projects where I decided the day before that this is what I was making and I completely underestimated how much work this would be. So come hang out while I attempt my first ever miniature fantasy house diorama in the form of a witch's cottage lamp. It would be an understatement to say I had no idea what I was doing. Sewing Room Makeover and Tour!

It's finally time for a studio makeover! I'm so excited to set up my new sewing/craft room to be dark and cozy and, (I think) a functional space for all my future projects. I tried for a dark academia theme, but it may tend towards a more witchy room as it evolves. I hope you enjoy watching someone struggle to build Ikea furniture. Thanks for hanging out! I did wonder what was going to happen with the buttonholes, and lo! It was hand-sewing time. They look great though! You had so much patience doing mock-ups. I "wearable toile-d" my way through getting to a decent pant fit and it was so depressing. So I applaud your commitment to doing it the right way! Thanks for sharing all the steps and this incredibly fun and funny project.

    • @ashbentley
      @ashbentley 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I regretted leaving the buttonholes to the end so hard 😅 I just didn't want to keep swapping the threads out! I always struggled with mock ups in the past because I felt like I was wasting fabric making non-wearable clothes, but I am happy I got in the habit because I'm much happier with my makes. Thank you so much for your lovely comment! And for continuing to come back 🥰❤

    I knit and HIGHLY recommend it. It's SO fun. Garment knitting is definitely a time commitment, though, so just know that going into it. And just like how there's a lot of trial and error in sewing, there's a lot in knitting, as well. You'll realize you read the pattern wrong and have to rip back, or you miscounted and you have to rip back, or you just got into the rhythm of it and knitted too far and have to rip back, or a million other reasons you have to rip back. If you like the look of chunky knit sweaters, you could start out with a thicker yarn (like worsted or bulky) and the sweater will take a lot less time to make than one with a finer gauge. If you don't like the look of chunky knit sweaters, I don't think I would recommend starting out knitting something you know you won't like, even if it would be easier. Maybe check out a few different "What I wish I knew when I first started (garment) knitting" videos to see some more experienced knitters' advice to beginners.

    • @ashbentley
      @ashbentley 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I do like the look of the chunky sweaters, so a thicker yarn would be a great place to start I think (surely less stitches to count?!) and maybe I'll even start with a chunky knit beanie to get the feel for it. I will definitely be watching some videos because I am going into this FRESH. Thanks for all the advice! ❤

      Oh that big necklace! A lot of neurodivergent people can get overwhelmed by sensory issues (itchy fabrics, jewellery, bright lights and lots of noise, etc). Great video! Your determination to sew these the right way was very informative! Also I started knitting before sewing. Highly recommend because the quality of knit sweaters you buy in store is so bad. I have a winter sweater i knit with cotton and it’s the best thing ever. Warm layer but still breathable, not itchy at all and looks great after many washings. Plus the act of knitting is such a calming thing to do with your hands.

    I'm neurospicy too and I'm 100% convinced if I ever tried knitting or crocheting again, my main problem would still be losing my stitches and miscounting my rows. Buuut I've seen those thingies with the prongs where you simply weave the yarn like, in and out? and then over? To make scarves. Andddd... Well. What's a sweater if not a collection of scarf shaped thingies sewn into a tube and then to one another?? Can't be that difficult! Right? Right???

    • @ashbentley
      @ashbentley 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      oh wow that is actually unlocking a memory of trying to knit when I was like 10 and the scarf was all wavy from all the missed and added stitches 😅 I am super keen to try weaving too though!! I'm keeping my eye out for a loom because that honestly looks quite relaxing to do. And yeah, surely just add all the pieces together at the end??

    They look amazing, I love all the pockets. I didn't realize you had to change thread for the different parts, I have been stitching stuffed for years oops lol. I do have a pair of dungarees which I love so much but they are super wide legged and at some point I may look into how to reduce this. I was just going to stitch up the leg and call it done 😂

    • @ashbentley
      @ashbentley 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I'm actually not sure that you do need to change the thread, it was more of a money saving thing because the top stitching thread was $7 for a spool and that only had 30 meters on it. But you should definitely have a go at adjusting your dungarees! I was actually having heaps of fun just trying out different alterations and seeing what it did to the fit of the pants 🙂

    You are welcome for reminding you about a needle point tracing wheel. You should be a good TH-camr and explain how it works.

      Haha THANK YOU! I can't explain how it works because I'm not even sure I'm using it right 😂😂

    One more and I’m finished -buy yourself some denim needles.

      They were ALL denim needles! They broke because I kept hitting the metal zippers 😅 I'm used to invisible zippers that you can just sew through

      @@ashbentley I apologize! I missed that. I should pay closer attention. But here’s my thought.. I think you overplay your supposed lack of skill. I think you are very smart and very good at figuring things out. Those jeans are a masterpiece and two muslins are not many for figuring out a pair of jeans that needs to be able to carry off all those pockets. Good job, you a fast learner. And I expect that you will continue to pull off amazing feats of sewing adventure. My eyes will be glued here for as long as you are producing content. I love your energy and wish I had even half as much.

    I also wash/dry denim up to 3 times because it continues to shrink. I do this with flannel, corduroy, linen and denim because they all shrink for several washes.

      Oh good to know! I have a linen donna cover and I swear it shrinks every single time I wash it.
