For future reference, if you are working with a WOVEN plaid, you should ALWAYS follow the lines in the pattern! The fabric is stretched right off the bolt but when you wash it, it will "true" back into the proper shape. Cutting along the pattern lines will always always give you the straightest, strongest, most stable lines. (If the pattern is printed, however, throw that shit in the garbage lol cuz you will never get it right) Great job on the lapped zipper though!!
This makes me feel so much better because I did stick with following the lines! And now I'm thinking this is a really good reason for me to start pre-washing my fabrics 😂 Also I had no idea it was called a lapped zipper! I thought I was just being silly because I couldn't figure out the correct way to do it 😄

OMG Persuasion is my favourite book! I got a cloth bound edition when I visited Jane Austen House last year 💚 The wheated skirt is amazing, especially with the matching tie! Giving me major Sailor Moon vibes ❤ PS unpicker.
Omg I would love to go to Jane Austen house one day. Persuasion just makes one FEEL so much 😭 And lol I'm so glad wheated skirts are catching on 😂 I'll take Sailor Moon vibes for sure! 💙
I made myself a dress form with assistance using a t-shirt, water activated paper tape, newspaper expanding foam and coat hanger. Handy if you can't find custom dress form
That is such a cute skirt! One day I'll make the garment I dreamed of (a blue leather coat with fur trims that's longer in the back and has buckles in the front) but I don't have the skills to do it justice yet. 😅 The only people I've heard call it an unpicker were all aussies, so I assume it's a regional thing.
Thanks so much! That project sounds so challenging! I'm keen to try leather too but I know you only get one shot with it so you need to be sure it will fit. Also, interesting if it's an Aussie thing!
I would had just opened the sides where they pockets need to be after skirt allmost done and put them in. And made the skirt just slightly to big to counter the seam allowense where the pockets goes in
The skirt is so cuuuute! I miss pleated skirts a whole ton now haha! I wonder if just hemming it before pleating would work out better than hemming after though? (I own Persuasion and S&S but I totally wanna get Emma...these are my fave Austen films as well....especially the 2007 version of Persuasion! Ohhh the pining )
Thank you so much! I think you're right, hemming first would have made a lot of sense, then just being really careful with the pleat placement. I haven't seen the 2007 Persuasion! I'm trying to get my hands on it but the streaming services here don't have it 😔 I'll keep trying though!
Yea I think that might work! I hope you can try it out. The 2007 version is really good! It was on Amazon prime when I was in Japan but that was sometime last year. I dunno if it still is 🤔. If you have a vpn I’d look there first. It’s so so good. Tbh that’s why I bought the book!
AaaaaAAAAAAAAAA it's adorable! My first project that I made when I was getting into sewing as an adult was very similar to this! A blue plaid kilt style skirt with knife pleats along the sides and a box pleat on the back, inverse box pleat on the front (no idea what it's properly called). I had a much more shaped waistband due to not actually knowing what I was supposed to do for a skirt, but I think it's great how it is. I went into it with zero plan and ended up taking a year long break from sewing it before finishing it because the final seams were just so many layers of fabric and I was worried my machine wasn't able to do it. Your skirt is absolutely fabulous and adorable! Would love to see more or a similar style as a dress with a vest style bodice.... Now I have ideas...! Hope everything went well with the move! 😊
Thank you so much! I did feel super cute in this. Your skirt sounds very similar! A curved waistband would have been a challenge as your first project, but it sounds like you nailed it! ☺
@@ashbentley Abwah I didn't see this notification! I ended up chopping the "waistband" into 6 pieces because they needed to be different lengths, and I stared at it for like a year before finishing it XD It feels like sometimes the only way to finish a project is staring and thinking on it for a few days 😂 Looking forward to your next project!!
@@Drgn8DDragonsDungeon I am struggling to picture the waistband being cut up into different lengths, I can see why you needed to take your time with it! I often find just taking a break from a project gives me that break through, particularly if it's getting late in the evening and my brain isn't working anymore!
Normally your sewing machine should also be able to sew jeans. Most Brother sewing machines can handle that. Buying good jeans needles from, for example, the Schmedz brand and an old pair of jeans that you can cut up so you can test them, will help to see whether your machine can handle heavier fabrics such as jeans. The skirt looks lovely.
Thanks for the tips! I did exactly this yesterday, (as I had already bought the jeans pattern and the 12oz denim a while ago - overexcited) and while the brother machine with the Schmetz jeans needle went through the fabric fine, the underside of the stitches were kind of all over the place. Possibly my bad for buying such a hefty denim! And thank you very much :)

Definitely a hem before pleating situation
1. I think you are correct

I’m living for this linen shirt, did you make it? /brand?
It's from Shona Joy! Unfortunately though it's viscose not linen. I bought it online during a sale and didn't read the description properly 😥

Yes, I knew it as a quick-unpicker in Australia, and adapted to seam-ripper in the US. Cute skirt, and good job on all the packing and organizing.
Thank you so much! Now to unpack it all 😅 And I think you have the answer there - US / AUS divide on the terminology
Omg it turned out so cute in the end! I love how your process is so much like mine. Absolutely flying by the seat of your pants.
