I did the opposite😂 So after just few rides on my kenevo expert 27.5 rear/front I just replaced the 27.5 boxer with fox 40 29r. in this mullet setup I have now a E-DH bike! Love the tasty stuff at the peak🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Thinking about it but does the zee fit to any udh? Thanks
Skip this it is dis continued get this Shimano CUES LINKGLIDE th-cam.com/video/DLZMnDT7c48/w-d-xo.html
This year I was 6th in the enduro world championship and I ride Rockshox like all the top riders in Europe
Congrats
After removing the spacer, do you still like the 1st gen x2 more for downhill performance? I'm deciding between the reliable oldie or the '24.
It’s been so long since gen 1 I don’t know
What are your top favorite forks right now?
Dvo Fox RockShox ext that order . Ohlins vid soon.
Otter! Awesome channel, wish I could play with high-end suspension all day on my e-bike like you and make vids about my experiences, ha! Anyways, seen both your vids on the e-storia and Ohlins, and you eluded to the idea that they both have very similar designs and features. I guess my question is: do you think the Ohlins is simply a cheaper version of the ext (seeing how the shaft is smaller)? Is there a major feel difference or reason to choose one over the other, aside from price? I'm a heavier rider at 275lbs, and looking to put the cascade components long link on my s4 turbo levo, but not sure if the EXT or Ohlins would be the "best" way to go? I am planning on upgrading my fork to the Ohlins RFX38, as I loved the 36 on my stumpy evo, given that you have total control over ramp-up, compression characteristics, and mid-stroke is great for heavier riders. With that, I'm leaning towards the Ohlins to match the fork, unless there's some compelling reason to pick the EXT that you can think of? Like because of my weight or something else? Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks again!!!
Cool to match it up ext looks cooler. Your weight may be kinda dangerous on coil on Levo. The system weight bike rider is usually 300 lbs. may be wrong there. I’m 220 friend is 240 we both ride about the same 600 lb spring I narrowed his bike cascade link for a while. Talk to cascade about weight first
Outsourced to China. No.
Regarding coil springs: a coil is a coil no matter. The spring rate, preload and length can be different. As I mentioned when you used a to low spring rate and winded it up with tons of preload, it is like testing a tyre without air or to much air, it does not tell anything. The only thing that can be a difference is the progressive behavior that for expample the Sprindex/Vorsprung coils have. Regarding bladder vs ifp piston you say that the bladder gives the shock more poppy feeling? That has not anything to do with bladder vs IFP, the difference is related to IFP pressure not type of IFP. It could also be a lot of differences related to mono or dual tube design, and of course the valve design in general. So please stop to categorize shocks with or without bladder, since it is not relevant.
Thanks. 🙏 I’ll look further into this. Mono tube etc. I stand behind the list regardless. The bladder air shock topaz same damper didn’t notice much difference same with forks. Just the coil shock it seemed to make the difference.
I love you so much! I recently just found your kislux and i’m in love!! Your videos are so fun and you energy is just MWAH! keep living your life
Everyone watching this should keep in mind that this is one guy's opinion that, frankly, seems to have a lot of weird hot-takes. Well done on the video and editing, but I would say that you're missing a lot of CRUCIAL information. I would love if this video was done by someone with more industry experience and knowledge.
What’s missing? I said it’s my list. TH-cam is full of sell out bought videos. I decided I have no price. You sound like a typical industry push over
@Logan that last bit of your comment misses the point of this video. There are plenty of places to find reviews of these shocks done by industry experts, but this guy's take is so much more relatable for most people I think. I feel like it's what I would do in my garage if I had the time and money.
Phew! DONE! I have no idea why I watched this from start to finish, I have no intention of buying a coil shock or anything else for that matter, I like my bike how it is.
Best answer right there. I call it the upgrade trap
Can you make a videо about old but gold dhx rc4 shock?
No the sizes are wrong
RE: 210x55 on the Cane Creek, unfortunately some Enduro bikes shipped with this size shock. I had a Norco with this, and my Nukeproof Mega 290 has this shock length unfortunately. It's absolutely terrible as a heavy rider to run air on these because the ratio is so high you'll have to run 300psi on the rear shock, and the stiction is unbearable on an air shock when you air up that high.
This why I am a coil shock only. Any air shock above 250 is trash. 210 x55 just makes it worse not much better with 230x55
i found Ohlins TTX coil on a sale ( didnt know much about brand and didnt watch any reviews ) and replaced my Rockshox Select air shock with it . What a difference !!! Now watching this ,seems i bought one of the best shocks on the marked
Hey Otter, big fan and supporter of your vids! I've got a 2022 Merida e160 with a 160mm Rockshox Lyric Ultimate fork and a 2022 non-Buttercups air shock in the back. I weigh 88kgs and I love jumping and going through rock gardens. I'm thinking about upgrading to a mid-range coil shock and spring, and I'm considering DVO,suntour or marzocchi CR. Do you think that these would be a good match for the Rockshox Lyrik? I'd really appreciate your help and suggestions looking forwards to your reply👍
Hard to say I have never seen a Merida and don’t know about the bike, super duluxe vivid is safe bet with hbo. If that bike is linear suspension you need progressive spring on the other shocks listed. And those are skittle challenging and expensive to get dialed on. Signing out for a few weeks to R and R off the videos ✌️
This is a real TH-camr! Maybe in the future will be good to have a similar video with air shocks
Have you try DNM shock
i still use Z1 from 1996 the top tube has a bolt clamp its not failed yet,
Do this with air shocks
Those responses from Steve were very reasonable and you kinda did him a disservice with your summary, especially given he took the time to answer your questions. He backed up his claims with measured data and engineering considerations as opposed to just going "feels better"
I highly respect Steve, the inspiration behind making nerd shock videos. I said non IFP responds faster. Something that can only be felt. If IFP shocks are the same why is Ohlins not onboard? I gave his response in summary and let him know I was extremely grateful for the response. Go back to the old tech Tuesday and watch the Fox 38 video he tore down. I’m summery he says 38 stanchions are not important dyno data says the head crown should be stiffened. How did that age? I rode all the reinforced 36 mm stanchion head crown forks and they don’t even compare to 38. It’s something a Dino can’t measure. Hope this helps your take. I won’t just be a push over TH-camr for free product. still mad respect 🫡 for the guy even though I burned my bridge. I won’t sell out
I'm using the recommended settings on my Factory 36 with sag at 20%. It feels like a piece of wood. Great video but I am pretty sure I got a dud.
Nope. Rebounds to slow. Let me guess less than half of total in slow direction? Over 200 lbs
@@OtterMTBtech 160 lbs, I've used Fox’s suggested settings and tried both faster and slightly slower rebound.
Advanced Suspension Setup MADE EASY th-cam.com/video/hKTcgYAW-sQ/w-d-xo.html
Why on earth would you test coil in the smooth bike park? You get coil for traction over the rough terrain. Go and ride some natural trails with roots and rocks at speed.
I only ride bike paths
what shock should i get from my yt tues 250 x75? like price and performance what do you recommend, it would be my first time ever with a coil so i dont need the most expensive yet.
What fork
@@OtterMTBtech fox 40. yt tues dh bike. i have an x2 and float x for it. never tried a coil on any bike, figure my dh is the one to try it with
@@OtterMTBtech please tell me
It’s sweet to match it up dhx2. I buy the shock most on discount I literally bought and narrowed every shock in video
The rockshox with hydraulic bottom out is just the best.
I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I don't think springs are springs. I believe that the angle at which the coil is... Well, coiled, plays a significant role in the its flexibility. Let's say the uniform part of the spring (disregarding the ends where it's made to better fit the shock) is made out of L inches/meters of material, it has N turns and it's length at rest is l0. Then the angle a0 at which the compression force is applied to each point is arcsin((l0/N)/(L/N)) which is arcsin(l0/L). In a compressed state at spring length l1 the angle would be arcsin(l1/L). Since we're operating between 0 and 45 degrees of angle here (I've never seen a coil shock with coiling angle outside of that range) and l1 is necessary less than l0, lower sine value means lower angle. If we apply the same force at a lower angle, the spring is easier to bend (I don't really know how to formalize this, it's just common sense), which means the spring is softer if it has tighter coiling. If all that is correct, the progressive spring is a spring where the distance between the turns is increasing monotonically. As a side note this gives us a way to construct coil springs with all sorts of weird force curves. Of course, we consider the Young's modulus of the spring material to be constant across the entire spring. Another way of getting a progressive spring would be to have a standard shaped coil but with different Young's modulus across it's length, for example by different heat treatment of different regions of the spring.
🤔. This is good theory. It feels softer the short one so this could be it.
The sheer effort that went into this video...like n sub given as tribute ! Actually trying to choose a rear shock as well
I dont know what to say about that comment about maxima oil… been running maxima on alot of shocks in snocross, motocross and now in bikes like my downhill racebike and cant see any issues at all so some proof would be nice to this comment… for my part i have plenty of customers who are happy with their suspension and that is also maxima oil only.
Not sure what rockstar uses in their dampers. But I used some. Fox or motrex oil inside of one it was day and night difference it’s possible rockstar. Use some really budget Crap stuff in their damper.
What happened at 45:54? I guess no one else watched that far...
Thank you it glitched there chopped it out
Hehe, shaft.
Im running my own frankenstein version of this thats kinda the opposite, slx lever with a mt200 caliper 😄
Works it works
I respect the amount of work that went in to this. Great list, very interesting and nice with chapters to make it easy to digest. It does however makes me wonder about the choice of putting text in the sheet in so many different sizes, colors, types and so on, making the sheet ugly and confusing. What happaned to just make a column readable in an orderly fachion? :) I hope I didn't sound too harsh, still love the vid!
World needs more harsh real answers.
300 Euro for a ext service... lets go for a vivid! imho
BMW service center. Last time I checked here $190.
I just bought a second DVO Jade for $220 haha. I would of got the new Jade x prime but it doesn't fit my bike. I was also looking at ohlins but it was $800.
What bike? Orbea
Did you put tokens on your fork?
None
MRP Hazzard was so good- I owned one in my Meta. Super sturdy, approved for bikes like the Meta and your Kenevo… I dunno I loved it. I’m curious though to try something else and saw they are sold out or discontinued as well. I emailed them and they claimed it would be in stock within a month… that was over a month ago now and no change.
I remember watching a video why DVO with the bladder. They did a blind test and on all of of their test, 100% picked bladder type shock and thats for all conditions.
It’s not hype. Why would Ohlins choose this if it was. Blank check suspension brand
FYI - I'm running an MRP Progressive Coil on my DVO Jade. Its awesome.
Push is only 10 minutes from my house, so service is easy, and warranty extends every time you send it for service. I'd love to try their front forks, but that's too rich for my blood. Maybe after they hit the used market. I picked up a used one that they're currently servicing. Hopefully it will be awesome. Otherwise I will switch to Ohlins because I have trusted them for 25 years on my dirt bikes. Although DVO has been working with WP lately, so maybe their stuff is going to get better than it already is.
The only way to WP DVO is to buy the Gas Gas ebike. So bummed on that.
IFP of Storia V4 is something the Formula Mod has already.
Did you see its ranking?
@@OtterMTBtech , yes and was surpised to see it as so few have tried the Mod - at least in Europe - its quite inexpensive. Nice work including it! As mentioned in a previous comment, I have done back-to-back on a couple frames of Storia V3 and Mod - and the Mod won out. Not a Formula fan-boy but I do love my Cura 4 brakes and Mod shock. As a fork I would chose Mezzer Pro or RXF 38 but I am 215lb rider in BC riding steep tech.
I got the Voro , bloody good shock . And at a bloody good price ! Kind hard to justify in spending the money on a top tear shock when the Voro performs that well .
Fox neo livevalve is just for climb switch.
It has like tune options in app. No hBO hsc $1.400 I am guessing it will flop down like version 1 live valve
EXT is king, service is a cinch, just send it in, 1-2 weeks later it's back in your hands with the best most supportive feel/performance, and if you want a beefier Era fork, just go with the Extra Long version (reinforced stanchions and CSU) and have them reduce the travel down to as low as 150mm...plus they have springs all the way up to 800lbs...crazy! Cool factor is 1000+ 🤴
I’m going ext in the rear for my Levo soon. I just ordered a fox38 fork yesterday
Hey which after market coil spring fits on canecreek double barre shock?
Mostly all I think 1.5 inner. Only fox won’t fit. DvO is straight swap in Sprindex comes with clips to fit
@@OtterMTBtech thanks, i sold a rs coil to a guy with canecreek shock and did not fit.
peaced out at that girthy shaft point in the vid...
It would be hard to upgrade my dt Swiss 350 hubs and traverse alloy to motor zip wheels that are expensive carbon to feel more alloy. I did upgrade my suspension and have no regrets.
Love my DVO Jade, and Jade X. I'm thinking about getting the Jade Prime. The Jade is already good ad I don't know if I needed to upgrade
I am so pleased that my last bike purchase was a Mondraker Foxy R aluminum frame bike with Ohlins air fork & shock with a low end drivetrain that got replaced and then trickled down bikenomics style to my Wife's fat bike. She went from 2x10 to 1x12. Then I upgraded my '18 Kona Process 153 AL/DL with Ohlins coil fork & shock. My enduroish trail bikes are dreamy and I am done. Both bikes behave perfectly with a few rides and minimal changes to my initial intuitive setup they behave and I can trust them.
Anyone has info about Formula Mod coil shock ?
I have two of them - have tried back to back on 3 different enduro frames - vs Intend Hover (3rd place - fancy air can), Storia V3 (2nd place), Formula Mod (1st Place). Any questions? Lockout on Mod is rock hard and it has a safety incase you forget but not really necessary as it is so hard you will never forget. Mod weighs a tad more than Storia. I have not tried Storia V4. I have the Ohlins on an ebike - it feels excellent. Might try it on my enduro bike.
It looks like servicing it at home is easy?
@@OtterMTBtech , not tackled it yet. No nitrogen needed as it uses a bladder and the shock pump is included in the box (a good one with a quick release I might add). I could not find a service manual online so I emailed Formula and they sent it to me. It mentions custom tools (not cool). Sorry - I have had one of them serviced professionally and have been remise in servicing the other one. For reference, I service my Manitou Mezzer (including damper) myself.
Thank you for this in depth coil video! One question. Why do think Maxima oil ist bad?
