Combining wushu musicality is interesting to me because 1) i think it's a relatively underexplored art-form with a lot of potential 2) there seems to be a small but definite niche for it in the circus/show world. Without music, wushu naturally has it's own rhythm. The rhythm isn't defined by beats per minute or subdivisions, but the limits of "as fast as you f-ing can", how long it takes to EMp...

Looking back at 2019, I'm actually pretty proud of how this ended up coming together (despite it not having that much wushu in it... and my opening looking like nanquan? oops haha.) Many thanks to the coaches that I worked with in China while preparing for this competition - Wu He Jian and Gu Xiu Hong. My only regret is that I didn't iron my silks the night before. How long do you work on your strength and conditioning, flexibility and wushu each day? I'm still figuring out how much of each thing my body can recover from to keep training during the same and the next day. I will take this morning/afternoon division of trainings during the days trainings overlap, it makes more sense than the way I was doing it. I practice flexibility 3 times a week, half an hour to get to the middle split and half an hour to get to the frontal split, I wouldn't change that. I learn something important from your video, I have been doing 5 days a week of strength training, dividing all the muscle groups in those 5 days to make it possible. Then I also practice wushu 4 times a week, 2 days on group classes, 2 days on my own. I have been able to do it with the proper nutrition. But I think I will modify my strength and conditioning training approach by limiting it to specific objectives, and not just targeting the entire muscles. Instead of having 3 "legs" days and 2 upper body days, I will focus exclusively in the strength I need to build for specific postures, another day in the muscular/cardiovascular endurance, and the third one on explosiveness. I will reduce strenght/conditioning training to three days, and make it shorter but precise, establishing clear objectives. This will make more sense than my actual rutine. How do you manage to train strength and conditioning without getting your muscles too sore for wushu training? Are your strength/conditioning sessions shorter but with a few precise objectives each time? Thanks for sharing.

I'm working on a project that uses martial arts and acrobatics to play percussion music - finding ways that we can use the strikes to hit things that play notes/make beats. So yeah, I also think there's lot of underappreciated potential here. Maybe one day we can collab!

Try leading with your hands. Not arm muscles, try not to carry. Just the basics, use the floor and power from dan tian and lead with hands for palm strikes. Toes forward. All of the components for that classic compulsory have their basis in combat techniques, just think it's telling a story building and winding up in stages with greater intensity one leading to the next. Grounding and foot work is 100 percent important always. Looks good though.

Thanks for sharing! What do you think about, instead of matching choreography to music, so match music to choreography? Of course, this means you need to work with a musician who is good at composing for action, but that might be an interesting exploration so that (as you said it) matching movements to music takes some of the power away, whereas, if you match the music to the movements, it might enhance the inherent power in the movements? Just a thought. Keep it up! :-)

Sure, Wushu can be a dance, why not? At the end of the day, a lot of us are just dressed in fancy pajamas, swinging around fake swords and sticks, indulging ourselves. The same cannot be said for many traditionalists, including traditional Chinese martial artists, who take themselves too seriously, pretend that what they are doing is somehow “better” than what others are doing, which is an altogether arrogant attitude to have, readily believe in their doctrines and dogmatic traditions that limit the practice of martial arts, and often do not consider reality. Glad to see you can still find passion for Wushu! 🙂
