I try to play fair and record only PUBLIC DOMAIN texts or texts that are old and obscure and out-of-print. If I record a story it's because I like it and want to bring it to other people's attention. If you're someone's literary estate contact me and I'll take the video down.
*If you hate what I do, or hate me or the world in general, how about NOT commenting? Just an idea. Try it.

"Ganthony's Wife" by E. Temple Thurston | Spooky stories | Audio narration
With the Stennings and their guests gathered round the fireplace on Christmas Eve, Northanger offers to share a very different ghost story, based on a strange and baffling encounter of the year before.
This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “GANTHONY’S WIFE” by E. Temple Thurston (1926).
You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to an upcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem, my bonus show for paying TH-cam channel members and Patreon supporters.
CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it’s not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I’m sure they’ll be glad to hear from you.

Very good. Thanks!
Thank you, that was great.
Wow .Two stories that stuck with me by H G Wells. The other is about Squids really good dont remember the name.
This story gets me like no other. The inescapable darkness 😮l have a hard time getting thru it.Truly Terrifying tale.Maybe as far as l know THE scariest. Its the only one that gets my claustrophobia going.
Ooh! That was creepy! I liked it.
This one kept me guessing.
Seriously? Your accents are AWESOME❤
Thankyou. New sub here. You have a soothing voice.🖤🖤
Found your channel through the Ashridge radio drama podcast, which is absolutely incredible. Really glad I did. Amazing narration.
@@Zer0Faith2003 Thank you 🙏
Wow.
Hmm. I wonder why young girls were “necessary” to the old lady’s husband? It’s almost vampiric. Great story, very creepy. ❤
That was absolutely marvellous - thank you..
Fantastic! Full of dread 👻
New subscriber. This is quality work. Thank you.
@@jwsuicides8095 Thank you! And welcome to my channel! 👋
Wasn't sure that was you .that's voice Acting!cool choice on the accent .Lovecraft rules them all !!!!What a tale.
Marvellous story, I do love these kind, thanks Jasper :)
It's fitting that a tale for this wintry season should be so chilling! This was certainly a creepy tale.
Beautiful
I can scarcely tell you what a delight and comfort your stories are. Thanks again for a wonderful telling!
Lovely Christmas story
Jesus!
Brightest ,an most Blessed of 2025 to you Jasper LA Strange I think I have found the most endearing ,an profound little paragraph in a ghost story I have in awhile " How do you expect a Ghost to clank chains ,when the clamoring of Motorbuses drowning out the noise out of existence , What good is blowing out a candle, when the streets are daylight with street signs.." Do think this is why Penny dreadfuls an slasher stories became so the rage over the years..
Walpole wrote the h3ll out of this one -- raw, searing interior monologue. L'Estrange read the h3ll out of this one (as he so consistently does). Bravo!
Favorite Narrator
Jasper, you've done it again! Edge of my seat storytelling! I so hoped for a cheerful ending! And I suspected the real burglar was the miserly Uncle! Happy New Year and Cheers/Thanks!
Thanks for the SuperThanks! 🙏 Happy New Year to you too!
An excellent story that holds as much love for the living as for the dead, as befits Christmastime. Cheers, in the New Year!
Happy New Year to you too! 😊
OMG! I Iaughed until I thought I was going to wet my pants.
Haha! Be careful 😄
2:35 such a wild take on country specific limitations on ability to form friendships 😂
What a lovely tale. Took me back decades to my own childhood with cousins, aunts and uncles and high spirits. Thank you 🙏. I write this with tears in my eyes.
Ah, it is a reminder of a more magical time. Thanks Susan 🙏
Absolutely excellent, thank you!
Enjoy your break. Thank uou for anothrr year of stories and your incomparable narration
♥️❤️♥️
The best story in the entire channel ❤ Thank you 🙏
Good one.Jasper you help me and many others lm sure more than you know.lve always been a fan of radio drama's and lm so glad that in this age of tech such an old form is still popular.(someone narrating a tale).Classic is always in style.
Absolutely hilarious 😂 How do they get away with publishing these!
Wonderful story - thank you. I read ‘Fame is the Spur’ a long time ago - this story was written 9 years after that well-known novel and is very different - so, more to explore perhaps!
Excellent story by the very versatile Mr. Benson-and superb reading by the talented Mr. L’Estrange ❤
Thanks! This is one of the best narrations ever. I love it. Sorry I missed sending this for Christmas!
Thank you for the SuperThanks! Very kind and much appreciated 🙏
Great story and narration, Jasper! Thank you for all the great December offerings. I hope you enjoy your well-deserved time off. I look forward to listening to your new releases after we enter the new year. I love the blue falling snowflakes you put in your December releases this year. Awesome! It adds an awesome effect. Also, your release rate is perfect. Some channels release daily or near daily all year. That is impossible for those of us with jobs to keep up with. Your rate of release allows all of us to listen to your excellent offerings as they are released without falling behind. Happy New Year to all! Thanks!
I'm honestly not certain whether this was a wonderfully subtle indictment of hypersensitivity or a deeply hypocritical act of wokery, but I THINK it was the former.
Woohoo- got my chan bk at some point. Missed your beer, Tx.
Thank you! This was very enjoyable. Your diction is so clear. Happy New Year!🎉
Wonderful reading.
Thank you!
Happy New Year Jasper! From Texas.
Same to you (from Nottingham)!
Thank you for regaling us with so many stories with so many “secrets.” It’s been wonderful.
Great story. Even the name Ganthony kind of sets things askew at the outset. Surely it should be Anthony, you think in a nano second. Brings to mind many old Japanese Ghost tales.
Really interesting one, this, and as always, you narrated it wonderfully. Thank you! Looking forward to more wonderful stories/escapes in the coming year. Happy New Year to you and yours Jasper! 🎉❤
