Spun out twice! Autocross in my 986 Porsche Boxster S 550 Spyder
Second autocross event I've done in my 2004 Porsche Boxster S 550 Spyder. On Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires that are getting a bit old. Ended up spinning out twice during the event! The car is right at home on the autocross track. In the spring I'll be putting on some more aggressive tires and new brakes.

This little trick will buy me some time before having to replace 2nd gear syncros on my 986. It didn't resolve the 2nd gear grind issue completely, but it's certainly improved when the car is warm. Second gear engagement is more notchy, but not in a bad way. Previously, I would not feel ANY engagement going into second. Fixing 100s of paint chips on the 986. The hood, bumper, fender, and other body panels were covered in paint chips. The best way to touch up paint chips is with a fine line painting pen. It allows you to be very precise with your touch ups. This takes the 986 project car one step closer to "restoration" (if you could call it that), and allows me to proceed with paint correction (polishing) and ...

did you have to loosen the primaries at all to get the clamps back on the secondaries where the two cats join? I just fumbled for 2 hours and couldn't get them over the connection point (lip where they meet). Going to try again tomorrow. very frustrated. I've tried both the mad and oem clamps roo realizing the mad ones are simply useless given they are too big to get in there.
I did wonder whether the additional weight of your buddy might have affected the weight distribution, but then you spun again without him ! Very tasty Spyder interior by the way.
What are the symptoms of a failing pump?
Lumpy idle immediately after start up that can cause the car to stall. Also slightly worse acceleration during a hard pull.
good job. keep up the good work. love to have more folks like us making porsche vids. cheers.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
awesome sound
Do you happen to have what's written on the side of the pump itself? Like a part number or a parts name?
Can't wait to see your videos of all these planned jobs. Appreciate your efforts. Cheers
Thank you. Transmission is out now. Wasn’t too bad! Taking care of the IMS this weekend.
I have a 2004 s It actually looks nicer than yours, I love it!
Wow it must be in great shape then! Congrats.
I’m sure I said it before but I’d take the actual airbag out of each seat if I were you, even if they aren’t connected.
Yep, you did. Thanks. I haven’t done it yet, but plan to remove the airbags.
Hasn’t this been uploaded before?
This is part 2 (passenger seat). Very similar to part 1 (drivers seat)
@ ah ok, thought I was loosing it 😂 keep up the good work
I went on NGK website and tried to find parts. For M5 F90 it didn't show any compatible spark plugs. And when I opened 97506 manually, it showed the compatibility with these V8 models: M550i G30 and M5 F10, but not F90. AutoZone also indicates that NGK 97506 is NOT COMPATIBLE for some reason. And the Bosch (BMW part 12-12-0-054-451) are Platinum, not Iridium. Is it safe to use NGK??
Yes, it’s safe to use NGK. I’ve noticed that situation too with a couple cars. I like to check a few “performance part” sites as they usually know best.
Nice video. I can use the OEM plugs. The NGK and gapping them aren’t necessary even on stage 2 tune. With the S63tu on the F10 and F12, F13 yes you needed to do this. With the F90, F93 you don’t.
I’ve heard both. Have you or a tuner confirmed this theory with logs?
Hi where did you get the metal coolent tank
RK Autowerks
Is it possible to check the condition of the mount without actually removing it?
Some signs of a bad mount are: (1) Feeling engine movement when transitioning on or off throttle. (2) Feeling like your shift cables need adjustment. This is why I did mine. 2nd gear was grinding and I thought it could be a bad front mount, causing the shift cables to be out of spec. Turned out not to be the issue. Your mount would have to be pretty bad to visually see issues. Check for cracks in the rubber if you can see up there. If you have a lot of miles on it, it may be worth just replacing it.
Very interesting thank you for sharing.
I own #1516 here in the UK. Mine has black leather and I'm a little envious of the brown! Fantastic car with some great extras. I've done a few of the easier jobs on mine but will soon replace the (original) shocks with Bilstein. Also I think I have a third gear synchro issue (when cold), the reverse light switch is gone, and I have no evidence the IMS has been done, so ill be taking the gearbox out at some point and kill several birds with one stone. Also a clutch-related component creaks when the pedal is depressed, only when hot, and only noticeable at low speeds. Read some different ideas on that in forums but can live with it for now. But it still drives superbly and is amazing fun! Looking forward to more of your vids!
Thanks! I love the brown interior. I’ll be doing the IMS, RMS, clutch, and second gear in the next month. I’ll be recording it and posting those videos.
Hello, great video, after installing the downpipe, I have an exhaust smell in the cabin and when I open the windows this smell is very strong, do you have any idea?
It could be that you have an exhaust leak. See if the smell is strong under the hood. If it is, you may have a leak.
@LenartoGarage thanks
Hello, great video, after installing the downpipe, I have an exhaust smell in the cabin and when I open the windows this smell is very strong, do you have any idea?
You could have an exhaust leak. With the car parked outside, open the hood and see if the smell is strong by the downpipes.
@LenartoGarage thank you
Pls record in landscape mode next time!
I posted a normal TH-cam video covering the process of paint correcting and ceramic coating the 986. It has some landscape shots of the final result.
Hope you reglued the emblems on your wheel center caps, mate 😅
What do you mean?
What car is that?
That was a 2015 BMW 335i. One of my favorite cars I’ve owned. Dropped about 20k in mods into it. Slightly regret spending that much on it haha
I thought he was in a pt cruiser at first 😂
How? 🤣
Into the sauce way to deep
Also I don't recommend keeping your garage door opener in place like that even if it's autocross. Just saying 😊
I've done the same on track in a 986. Snap oversteer, especially in a mid engine car, is a trip! 😂
Do you have any abnormal sound on deceleration? For example, cruising at 2-3k rpm and let the gas pedal off, and when the car reaches 1.5-1k rpm, there is like purring noise, coming out of muffler. I have the same muffler as you and this strange noise makes me unhappy:( thanks a lot!
Yes! I have the same thing. It’s not that pleasant of a sound.
Nice work. I'm planning to ceramic coat my 2000 Boxster in the next week or two. I used Avalon King on my 2005 Mercedes C230. It seemed to provide a slightly better gloss than the wax that I had been using. Time will tell whether ceramic coating will be as durable as the marketing claims.
When going from first to second I double clutch and the grind is eliminated. I never had a grind when going from 3rd to second so I only single clutch then. Changes are also smoother when oil is warmer. I intend to address the 2nd gear synchro one day when the clutch needs replacing
Double clutch never seemed to help in my case. This cheap fix almost eliminated it. I think I’ll wait until I need a clutch to replace the synchro.
Seeet. Good luck. Even with some of these issues they are still loads of fun
Agreed!
Great Video! I Have #0845 of the 550. I bought the same kind of spark plug but cannot find gap info. They came factory gaped at 0.020” but the page says the correct gap is 0.032” . I’m not sure what’s correct? Any ideas?
I believe it’s 0.032”, but haven’t seen that on a credible source.
Great video, beautiful Boxster S 550 and nice driving! And the cocoa brown interior, I just love it. Reupholstered parts will take some time until they color match the "aged" leather.
Any trouble removing the head bolts (at least on the side you removed)? Did you use a wrench or impact? 👍
Surprisingly no trouble removing the head bolts. I used an impact.
Thanks for the video!
Thank you for a terrific video. Working on my game plan for DIY. How long did the project take you? Also, did you find out about the other hose clamp?
Thank you. It took me about 3 hours. I recap the hose clamps in the video. They ended up all lining up as expected.
Your solution to the mangled seat rails showed persistence. I suspect the person who removed the seats from the donor car didn't know the proper technique for removing the seats and decided to cut them out. That decision made more work for him and you. I installed some 997 adaptive sports seats in my 2000 986. I have everything working except the lumbar and inflatable bolsters in the driver's seat. (I installed the seats in my car, but I continue to work on a solution to the lumbar/bolster issue.) I find the seats more comfortable and supportive than the stock 985 and I hope that they will hold me in place better during high performance driver's education session. With regards to your non-functional seat heaters, I offer the following suggestions. First, the component you refer to as "the box" is the seat heater relay. They are known to fail frequently. I suggest that you swap the relay from your 986 seats to your 997 seats and see if that resolves the issue. Second, I couldn't see exactly how you wired the seat heaters. On the 986 seats, the red/white wire is the power wire, and the brown wire is the ground. The red/white wire runs to one of the heating pads and then connects to then connects to the other pad with the black connector. The ground wire runs from the second heating pad and completes the circuit. I connected the red/white wire to the power wire for the 997 seat heaters and the brown wire to the ground. I suggest that you make sure that the red/white wire you used is the one that goes to the power circuit on the relay. I remember having to think about it for a while before I got it right. If you want to read about my project, you can start here: 986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/82894-starting-process-installing-997-seats-997-a.html
Hey man how much room is there when the fuel pump is in place? I’m getting ready to add a secondary lpfp in my g30 540i!!
Not much! It’ll be a tight fit!
No need to bleed the lines for air pockets ??
It’s a self bleeding system. Run the car with the heat all the way up for a couple minutes. Repeat and check the level for about a week.
Wish I would have seen this prior to allowing BMW, Bristol to fit their recall replacement tank today (08/10/24)
I’d take the new seats apart and remove the airbag because the explosive is still in there and the car isn’t designed to send the airbag in the correct direction if it ever went off (which they can) if it did it could also set off or react badly with the door airbag
The airbags don’t have power going to them so it’s very unlikely that they would go off. I do want to remove them to save some weight though.
@@LenartoGarage having worked in garages for many years, even airbags that were totally disconnected and out of the car had to be stored in secure heavy duty metal cabinets just in case. Apparently any electrostatic charge has the possibility of setting them off. (More likely when disconnected)
That's good to know, thanks!
Just did this install myself in the night took my 2 hours to finish it, but then i noticed on the drivers side the clamp where the primary meets secondary was touching the coolant hose. So just a beware for anyone doing this, also not advised by if you don't have an E12 socket, use a 10mm :) i believe its also a 6mm allen socket for the DP hanger bolts
I did the total opposite when I got my 986. It had 987 seats in it already, but I found a pristine set of 986 seats and swapped back. Thankfully the original installer was lazy and never modified any of the wiring!
My heating element on my 986 seats broke. That caused the seat heater to not work. After looking at what it takes to fix it I decided I didn't need heated seats.
I ended up not fixing the heated seat on the drivers side and not hooking up the heated seat on the passenger side. Maybe in the future I'll take a look again. So far I don't miss them.
Hey man, love the content, what model of quick jack do you have? I know that f10 m5 size wont work on f90
They are the 6000ELX.
Very helpful viedeo , ni need to lift the car? What about the smell in full catless? Ist always loud in comfort mode too?
The smell wasn’t bad. Sound is good. Not too loud.
That is so f,ing annoying! I just got a new alternator and serpentine belt for my boxster s You definitely need to tell them if it's a tiptronic, with or without aircon etc It's quite important
Where I can get the NGK? I have 2019 M5 f90 competition with stage 2 , I have to go with NGK? And the gap has to be 0.6mm or 0.022? Let me know please And how about the ignition coils ? Delphi it’s good ?
Lots of places have them. Just search the part number to find the best deal! You don't have to go NGK, but people have good luck with them. The gap for stage 2 should be .022".
Hey man, love the content, what model of quick jack do you have? I know that f10 m5 size wont work on f90

I prefer the silver one you just installed to the BMW replacement, nice video! Easy install other than the sensor removal. Curious Lenarto if you’ve had any valve pan gasket issues before 50k miles?? I’ve read a lot of F90 owners had valve pan gaskets leak in to cylinders 7&8 (drivers side) causing miss fires. They noticed when they did spark plug changes and pulled plugs 7&8 they had oil all over them.
Thanks! I haven’t had any oil pan leaks nor valve cover leaks. Oil in the spark plug tubes would usually indicate a valve cover leak. I did have to replace the oil filter cover. The stock one wouldn’t stop leaking even with new orings.
yep garbage, fighting with a seller right now. wants me to pay the return shipping for a refund! It doesn't even fit why should I have to pay for your crap to be shipped back to china!?
What a hassle! Makes me wonder if they work for anyone or if nearly 100% of sales are returns!
better to get the leather repaired than fully reupholstered !
Thanks for the heads up. I’m talking with some local automotive upholstery shops now.
Was there any difference in sound between these and the OEM downpipes?
Oh yeah, very noticeable sound difference.
