SMOOTH OPERATOR TRUCKING
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 พ.ย. 2010
On this channel we will talk about most things trucking related. Join me on my trucking journey as I transition from serving 20 years in the army to truck driver, owner operator and ultimately small fleet owner. I will share my experiences, give advice and just show how much fun and rewarding trucking can be.

Is what you see on the load board what you get before or after Mercer gets their cut?
@@noso4609 what you see on the load board is what you get after Mercer has already taken their cut.
Some companies are a bit ridiculous… I might be wrong, but I believe Landstar won’t haul 1.1D without a co-driver per company policy. Landstar definitely doesn’t haul tankers a lot, but I swear I’ve seen it a few times. Also, I see Landstar hauling a lot more OD loads than Mercer, or maybe that’s just me. Also, quite a few loads can be double brokered if you run for Landstar, so a private carrier will pay through the roof for you to move their freight.
@@Unduplicatable all very valid points

@@powermoves9242 I can’t remember off the top of my head, but I ended up replacing it two more times. The one I have now over charges.
@Smooth_Operator_83 ok, from what I'm hearing from others. The amps should be between 120 & and 135, but I feel it depends on what type of engine you have, as well as whatever usage you have going on inside your truck.
I don’t have a Jlif
@@Flux09 ???
It’s crazy that you don’t get paid when you are sitting because you literally have to do that to drop the load and how long you sit between loads is based on how long you’ve driven. So why can’t the pay they offer drivers reflect that? I mean you work 40 hours you don’t get paid for weekends or days off. So can’t they come up with a schedule that will keep your pay steady?
@@jordanvictoria5 we work more like 70 hours a week. Some trucking jobs do it just depends. Not a lot of over the road jobs pay you for sitting though
I’m no trucker but what you’re saying makes sense. Sitting for several days not making ANY money, just to wait for ONE higher paying load just seems illogical….to me 🤷🏽♀️
Next time show the bottom line after all expenses That’s why truck driving is deceiving. It’s the money we need to know about if you’re considering Mercer good video.
@@lpvp1 good point. I have several videos illustrating my bottom line.
Is it a good time to join mercer im im all clear to start orientation on Wednesday next week
@@donyero9033 I’ll be honest with you. Mercer is not a bad company. Their system with the first in first out takes a little bit of getting used to. The average owner operator won’t last long over here, but I don’t know you or your work ethic, business sense, and trucking history, or your expectations. How much are you expecting to gross a week? What are your business expenses? What are your personal expenses? Do you know your cost per mile (including paying yourself) do you know your fuel cost per mile? Do you know that every time you move your truck it costs you money even if it’s just driving to Walmart for groceries. Do you know the difference between fixed costs and variable costs? If you can live with grossing $4,000 a week and taking home $1,500-$2,000 (dry van) you’ll be fine. You can do better, but out the gate until you learn the system that’s where I would set my expectations. A $5,000 week is a good week at Mercer. The really good owner operators do $5,500-$6,000 a week, but they have really figured the system out and run the proper lanes to do so. Not trying to scare you off just being honest. Feel free to reach out to me anytime with questions. Good luck at the end of the day it’s what you make of it.
@Smooth_Operator_83 yes I'm owner operator I stay out a year at a time an I go go go my expenses are really food phone stuff like that but I stay out 12 months at a time what do you think about that
@@donyero9033 I think you’ll be fine as long as you’re being strategic with load selection. Don’t take a good paying load to a dead zone unless it’s paying enough to justify it. At Mercer it’s more about the longer runs than the shorter pickup and drop off daily runs. I think you’ll be fine. Keep us posted.

Great advice, thank you! Other than online places like Indeed and Craigslist, how do you suggest looking for a contractor with lots of miles?

Good morning. I have the same truck as yours. I’m having an issue where my actuator arm is jumping up involuntarily. Even when I’m parked at idle it’s jumping when I’m but hitting the gas. I lose power and air but not enough to drop more than 1-3 mph. Was this the same issue you were having?
No mine was just leaking overall it ended up being the turbo itself. I’m still having power issues but not as bad. I just replaced my air to air because I was told that was the issue but that didn’t fix it
Did u ever get it calibrated
@@terrelljackson708 next time I had it at freightliner they said that it was within specs and didn’t need calibration. My problem ultimately was I needed a new turbo, which I had just replaced 7-8 months prior to posting this video.

I respectfully disagree. I love my old trucks.
What are you running? I can only go by my experience and my data since putting this truck into operation back in 2022. What’s your maintenance cost per mile?
Most guys with new trucks are playing another game . Shop near my home is full or older trucks . Bro thats some money
Yeah I thought operating an older truck would keep my cost low with no truck payment, but I was wrong
@@Smooth_Operator_83 No you not you doing what works for your business .
