Nice shots and video! Any tips on using a mechanical camera in moisture? Did any issues pop up since then like droplets in the finders? Or oxidation? I am always avoiding taking out my Leica when it’s actively snowing and maybe I shouldn’t 😅
how many times have you had to service the M8?
Great Video , do you support Eire, stance against Israel ?
head to holy Isle next time. Buddhist Island off the coast of Scotland. Beautiful place.
great video as always , question i have a chance to buy either a M8.2 with 5500 shutter count or the Leica q both in mint ++ cond. the thing is where would i get the M8 serviced at the Leica stores i spoke with says Leica stopped working on the M8 i really want the M8.2 but i cant even get a CLA is there any place else to get it serviced , or is the Leica q a safer choice by the way there are both the same price $2200
John, that's a good question, it's not true for my M8.2 at least. Leica do service a failed shutters and will take it in. I believe they don't have replacement sensors and most likely electronic parts like circuit boards and chipsets etc. it will cost about 700/800 euro in Wetzlar, so it is very expensive unfortunately. Given the Q is a totally different camera, electronic viewfinder and not a range finder it's hard to compare the two cameras. My guess is the leaf shutter closed inside the Q is less likely to have issues given the less exposure to the elements and yeah most likely will cause less trouble in the short to medium term, however if the Q has an issue I'm not sure how easy that is to get fixed. I think the best deal out there right now are the many M240 cameras for sale, the are seem to have come down a bit and you can get some in lovely condition, they even if a proper black paint MP version of it which would be my pick!
Thank you for getting back to me, I do like the m8, I had a m240 but unfortunately it was stolen.i do want to also ask you about the zeiss 28 Biogon lens how do you like it, that was the lens I was going to put on my m240 before it was stolen , it actually came in a week after my camera was taken
Beautiful shots!
Thanks Richard, I really appreciate that. It's a beautiful part of the world, mind you it's winter now and we've a red alert storm coming our way this weekend so might be one to hide out for! :)
What was the shutter count when you had the shutter failure…. Mine is currently just over 15k…
Steve, I've to dig through my old notebook and see what I wrote down at the time. I will reply on this thread ok. Have a great weekend.
How to focus with this camera?
To focus a Leica Barnack camera which has two viewing windows, first set the desired distance on the lens by estimating or measuring the distance to your subject. Then, look through the rangefinder window, adjusting the focus ring until the double images align for sharp focus. then once focused you can move back to the viewing frame lines window and check your composition. Notice I tend to you a cold shoe external view finder and it is a lovely addition, makes it lovely to use! Unlike single-patch M focusing, which uses a central patch for precise alignment, zone focusing at around f/8 offers a quick alternative for street photography by setting a fixed distance, keeping most scenes in focus without refocusing. I hope this helps :)
Only just joined the Leica family with an M8.2….. still learning a lot about the camera…. Enjoying your environmental style of shooting.. such a change from the street orientated fashion populating most shooters these days… do you use an ir cut filter…
Hi Steve, congrats on the new M8.2. if you use it a lot you will get really good at it fast. I'm glad you prefer this style of video! Of course it would be easier and more time sensible to do more talking head videos. I felt My Leica M8 Q&A was a video that made sense to do it in my office but really I'm more about the relaxation that photography can bring and just enjoying a more long term project with my camera. If I can bring one of two folks with me, why not. I always do feel the video never does the real thing justice but look, I can only try. As you can see I'm not a full time content creator so I don't need to abide by the must post twice a week thing, I post these walk around videos when I feel maybe somebody might enjoy or benefit from 5 mins out and walk with me :) I sometimes use the IR cut filter. For black and white intentional work I leave it off 100% of the time, for green foliage for more realistic colours I think it's worth getting the IR cut for sure. I hope this helps.
Hi Colin…. Thanks for taking time to reply…. Will follow your channel…. Look forward to seeing what you come up with… currently shooting with the TT Artisans 50mm and looking at getting a voightlander 35mm Ultron and my lens choices….. probably selling down my Fuji gear….
I have a nice video coming up next from the cost, sort of sleepy foggy day there at the end of summer. Again one of those sort of relaxed type videos. I have not used the TT lenses but hear good things, I have a 35mm VG 1.2 and it's a beast of a lens. They know how to make a lens, I never nearly got that ultron you have recently. I held off, I think I'll get a 35mm coming into 2025 as honestly as a walk around lens it's a happy medium. the 1.2 is a version 1 so weighs a ton.
This camera is the craic!
I enjoy it ;)
Hi Colin, thank you for producing this great review. It was enjoyable to watch and informative. Do you have any concerns about spare batteries for the M8? I imagine that it is difficult to find a replacement battery these days. More so than the electronics or shutter failing, the lack of battery options to replace a worn out battery is something that would keep me from buying an M8.
HI mate, ok look don't judge me haha but I have some 3rd party batteries I use on this. Same spec and shape and they are actually superb. I have 5 batteries for this camera, 2 legit original batteries which still hold ok charge and 3 third parties. Also my charger failed maybe 4 years ago and I could not for the life of my find a legit replacement. When I went to look for one it came with these 3rd party batteries. Do so at your own risk of course, but I have had ZERO issues with them.... hang on I'm looking to see if I can find them still.... ok so for about 22 GBP you can get a battery like what I have and the charger is not much more! I would say don't that stop you. The biggest issue REALLY on this camera is of course when my shuitter went it has to go to Leica and you're looking at 4 month wait and 700 euro! ouch! yes 700! hope this helps.
Beautiful photos Colin! I’ll be back in Vienna next month, thanks for the inspiration for photos :)
Thanks Nick, I have another Vienna video coming out next month, sort of a part 2 from this one so hopefully you sub and come back. I'm glad you liked the photos, I am printing a few for the house here as I do love a couple of these. FP4 rules!
Thank you for sharing you extensive user experience. Bought an m240 after a day ,(you cant make this up) the sd card slot broke down, sent it to Leica so it will be around christmas/January before it is back. Thinking of buying a m8 and your video is a gem of information
Yeah the wait times are a bit nuts with Leica tbh. I mean it is what it is! My wait was so long for my M8.2 shutter replacement that I basically picked up the M10-R to see me through the year. I was lucky enough to be in the position to do that at the time but for most it's probably not really sensible. The M8 is great, I would get an M8.2 if you can find a clean one! it's worth the extra $.
The M8 is less limited than the M6 Titanium that I own, as film is terribly expensive, and the 1:1000 top shutter speed is very restrictive. I would swap my M6 Titanium for the M8 any day. I would make it my monochrome camera or slide alternative camera with the IR cut filter fitted.
The 1/1000 certainly does limit you if you want to use fast glass in good light. Very nearly picked up an m6 titanium many years ago. Wish I had now!! Yes I bulk but my film now twice a year, it has become very expensive but I can’t not shoot it 😬. Thanks for stopping by and converting mate. Cheers
good one-
Thanks mate
What is the differance between the m8 vs m8 . 2?
Hi mate, thanks for checking in on the channel. I hope you sub as I've a few interesting videos in the works finally! I hope this helps so lets five this a go. The M8 uses a metal-blade shutter and has a shutter speed up to 1/8000 and so it is quite loud, which btw I sort of love to! The 8.2 has a quieter, rubberised shutter and max is 1/4000 which is normal for the current versions. the M8.2 has a sapphire crystal display making it more scratch resistant. The framelines were adjusted by Leica for the M8.2 to be accurate at 1 meter which is more realistic for how we shoot really! I have heard rumours that the image processing was improved on the M8.2 regarding noise and I think I get slightly less banding on images on the higher ISOs than a friend and his M8 but again I have not done a scientific test! I think most noticeably the M8.2 comes with a really nice black paint on brace finish! Mine over the years I've had it has braced naturally as It's been everywhere, literally, and tbh I thnk it's gorgeous. it's similar to the finish on the film MP would be my guess and is pretty rare these days for digital cameras unfortunately. I hope this helps you :)
Hi, Colin. Good work. Not a city I ever think about much so thanks for the insights. Laughed at the shot of the guy attending to personal business outside that building. Nice catch.
haha. ah yes that lad was all business!!! Hah! I had to take it!!! Yeah DC was actually a fun trip, its not very often I find myself over there really so I'm glad I had a couple of days to myself to take it in. The Museums were so good. I really enjoyed the night scene there too. Picked up some locally produced photo books as well which sit on my book shelf here. I look forward to getting back there in the new few years hopefully. New video NEARLY done, been busy but it's on the way! Cheers mate.
I still use it, Came back trying M9 after the M to. But i feel really confortable with the M8 and the limitation is very positiv. I use other newer Cameras to, but NO one give the feeling like the M8
I agree with you 100%. The M8 is a super camera to have and tbh even at night I took some of my favourite photos with it. Of course you have to really know what your doing shooting at low ISO and at night and your lens comes into play but I have a 1.2 35mm from voigtlander for night and tbh I have lovely photos from my time in Asia at night street markets. some of my absolute favourites. hope you check back soon.
It's such a beautiful design the M8, still so reminiscent of the old film cameras. I just hope my M6 doesn't need any repairs any time soon 😅
It really is. I love the natural light port that allows the focusing patch to appear. It’s present on the m9 as well and of course all the older film cameras. Love that look, now replaced with electronic version of course so it’s not on the newer m cameras. Hope your lasts you mate. Cheers
Just realised I was just watching your Portugal video. Really enjoyed it mate. Thanks for coming over to the channel.

🤣 the wool jacket helped. The hands were gone alright hahaha
Great video
Thanks Richard. Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a beautiful city. In the snow it was perfect.
I have to visit there. great video
Thanks mate. Oh it’s absolutely worth the trip and if you can stay out there for a night or two it’s well worth it. Cheers
Nice video! What brand on lenses and how fast!
Good morning Anders, Thanks for watching firstly and I hope you sub. for the last 13 years I've used the same lenses. My two main lenses and what you saw in this video are my two Zeiss lenses. A Zeiss zm Planar T* 50mm f2. Basically Zeiss' answer to the 50 cron! And a Zeiss ZM Biogon 28mm f2.8. Which is Zeiss answer to the Elmarit 28mm. Except the Zeiss can focus down to 0.5m if needed. Both are amazing lenses. for years I have looked at some other lenses. I'm in the market for a solid 35mm. A cron, summilux (but it's a bit pricey) or Voightlander ultron f2 or the LLL 8 element 35mm. I do have a Voigtlander version 1 of their 35mm 1.2 which to me makes stunning images due to it's not perfect rendering. I sort of think I'm more into character lenses now as I age ;) I hope this helps. Can I ask you waht you shoot now?
@@colinosullivan not Leica M owner yet but probably buying a M10-R (mint) or M11
@@andersphansson M11 would be amazing but as a user of the M10-R I would say it's more camera than most need! Pretty amazing and very reliable as it was at the end of the M10 run.
Love your channel, such a gem. Will pickup my brand new second hand M8 next Thursday! What is your take in jpegs vs dng’s and if, how do you process them. Bit spoiled with sooc images from a Fuji XE1.
Thanks for the kind comment. Appreciate it. :) some more videos on the way I promise, just been very busy. Life! I always shoot DNG + JPG. I almost never use the JPGs and I process my DNGs in Lightroom classic. I do very little editing on the M8.2 files. Maybe some exposure adjustmetns half a stop either way but the look is sort of baked in! On the M10-R which by design gives you a flatter profile for editing I sort of do more on those. The Fuji cameras look very nice but never had a chance to use one here. Some day.
The photos are great but not enough compared to the video. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. Good feedback, I’ll have to rewatch this one. Possibly because this trip came at a time when chilling and relaxing was the priority. Hope you check out some of the other videos. Cheers
Our kids and their significant others live in DC and we go there all the time. Next time I am prowling the National Mall with my camera while my wife spends hours in the museums, I will be on the lookout for M8 shooters with a soft Irish accent!

Sold M8, because I have M-E 220. Shouldn't.... You have very well done bw.
The ME is a sweet camera. Enjoy it mate. Another M8 with come up for you. ;)
I had one and its a horrible camera, dont miss selling it, so many videos constantly praising this beta version of a camera for no reason at all
If there was just a single type of camera for everyone wouldn’t it a boring world! It was my first experience of a rangefinder and I loved it. It made no sense technically as my Sony camera had more dynamic range and way more features and it took me a long time to understand why it got selected over my Sony nearly every time :) This camera requires a lot of patience. Main thing is you are enjoying whatever you use. I usually say at the end of each of my videos it doesn’t matter what you shoot. And I mean that genuinely. I hope you enjoy some of my walk around videos If this video wasn’t to your taste. Out of curiosity what camera does it for you? Cheers
@@colinosullivan i have a big camera collection, but if we talk rangefinder I kept epson r-d1 and M9 and Id say I will never sell the epson, its less resolution then M8 but its good at AWB, better in low light, no filters, no color shift and the fact that you need to crank it just makes it soo cool

can i ask what the shutter life was when you needed to replace the shutter
The shutter failure I had was after 36203 exposures. Not sure how others got on with shutter counts. Hope this helps.
Fabulous video. Thank you. Let’s see you in spain again with the m8.
Thanks for watching the video mate. Oh I'll be back there for sure. Very soon! M8 wold be perfect for it with those colours!

It’s a gem tbh! Underrated big time!! I love this lens. Collapsible. It’ll be travelling across with me to Europe again this summer.
Nice!
Thanks mate 🙏
Inspiring! I noticed you are using an IR cut filter. Can you recommend a good one?
Glad you enjoyed this one mate. Yes, if I'm intending to shoot colour I will sometimes add the IR Cut filter. Sometimes I like the colours of the M8 so I'll use a standard UV filter, and I always leave the IR Cut off to black and white. The IR Cut filters I use are the B+W F-Pro 486 UV IR Cut MRC. I have always used B+W and they are still mint condition after ten years of use. Hard use. haha
You can see these mountains from Kinsale heading towards Garrettstown.
Oh really? I’ve never really looked back from kinsale actually. Funny as was there last weekend. Thanks for tuning in mate.
I wander if it's better to overexpose 0.5 when you shot at 800ios to keep shadow tones?
You may be exactly right actually. On this day I think I metered at the beginning of my stroll and that was it. :) Makes me wanna go shoot hp5 again. Cheers mate
Great video, and really great photos! You shooted the FP4 at native ISO? Thank you so much!
Sorry, it’s on description, I only saw after. thank you

Love this video! What camera are you using for your vlog shots
Sometimes It’s the Sony a7s but I’m this case it’s the iPhone pro! I think audio is more important than the video and so I have a zoom h1n with a wired mic and a wind cover and I sync those later with the iPhone footage!!
Fantastic shots, colours and nature.

Thanks fir sharing beautiful video from beautiful country. Leica M8 forever !!!
Glad you liked this one. Some days are special.
The Leica m8 is my first camera in life, a gift from my uncle, and also my enlightenment on photography. It has been with me for 17 years now, covering 3 continents, 20 countries, and 12000 shutter times. I believe this classic CCD sensor camera will accompany me for the next 17 years.
I am also using the same lens as you, and the Zeiss 35f2 and 50f2 lenses are both excellent lenses
I love hearing this. That’s such an amazing gift. It’s great it’s been all over the world with you. Aside from the occasional service I’m sure you’ll have that with you for a long time to come.
, ... and your camera M8.2 has, instead of Gorilla Glass(as you had said), the sapphire glass, which is used today in: M8 Monochrome, M9P, M9 Monochrome, M10 Monochrone, MP Type 240, MP Monochrome and the Medium Format LEICA S2P, as in the high horology.
…. Ah yes I did think the one take shoot that night would have a mistake or two haha. Your correct. Mine at least has no marks and ya no screen complaints for me. I would love to try nearly all of those cameras you mentioned. I very nearly opted for an m9 monochrome instead of the m10R but Given how we travel I figured I’d need colour for those family photos too! What are your shooting mate ?
Prost
Nice visualizations !I I only use my M8 in the streets ! This was a lovely walk !
I’m glad you liked this one. It’s a lovely spot that very few actually know about as it’s up a few back Lanes and really just woodland but I love it. Yes the m8 is perfect for streets isn’t it. Hope you’d a great weekend mate
Great to document change. We often take evolution for granted (wetland - agriculture - ports - flats and coffee bars). Many of the urban ports have changed beyond all recognition in the last 25 years (I'm thinking Newcastle and London esp). Not exactly 'blink and you miss 'em' but not far off. Today we prefer the 'out of sight, out of mind' mega ports where the stuff of the world ebbs and flows. Always worth visiting ports both for the photo ops and the reality of commercial modernity. FP4 working nicely there - rolling out the good stuff!
Fp4 really is the good stuff. I nearly missed this one s as it came down. They’d it down within about 10 days! The rest I’ll do in a more planned approach and archive them. I’m sure Newcastle and London have changed a lot. Glad I got this on film. About a week after when it was nearly fully down j was walking past to the food market with my m10-r and snapped a few more. Hopefully a nice weekend for the camera again this weekend as the weather moves on through. Any plans mate ?
Hi Collin, very nice pictures and great video. Keep on going. Greatings from a French Leica IIIa (1936) shooter.
Oh wow I’d love to see that iiia. Very very nice. I was originally looking at a iiia. Appreciate the kind words, where in France mate? Cheers
Hey buddy, love your video! Fantastic composition of the BW images. The camera really shines in your hands. More of Ireland documentary please!
Thanks mate. You’re the man who sourced it for me so I have to shoot it right ? Hehe
