I think that everyone of us has a photograph or two that strike an emotional chord with us. With me it is couple of simple images taken on a foggy winter's afternoon near my house three years ago. Maybe it was the Contax G2 that I used, that soon after stopped working, or perhaps it was that winter of Covid with all the uncertainty and misery that it brought for our people. Who knows, but everytime that I look at them I get very melancholic. Lovely photograph BTW, full of atmosphere.
Those photos of yours sound really great. I never had a chance to use the contax cameras but a lot of people seem to get on well with them. And ya that time you referenced was a nightmare here in Ireland! What cameras are you using these days mate?
Filmwise, its mainly Nikon and Leica M ( M2, M3 and M6) , Hasselblad, Pentax 6X7 and 4X5 and I also have a home made 5X7, I also have a few old folders. Digital, I use Nikon, Leica, Olympus and I still have my 5D MKII. Yes, all over the place, but thats me. @@colinosullivan
Scanning negatives into my computer and your wonderful presentation popped up. I appreciated your thoughts on photographs that resonates with photographers. And I on many occasions had that happen with me. So, I print them and file them into a portfolio album to revisit them later and eventually leave to my kids and grandkids so they can ask, 'what possessed the ol' man to photograph that?' 'Howling Winds'! Colin you're a lot braver than this Arizona child to capture, grab, snap this wonderful moment in foul weather. In your photograph I feel the solitude of the gentleman reaching his unknown destination and I can feel the snow pelting him. If I had taken this picture, I would have printed it.
Mate I’m loving your channel btw. The monochrome work is superb. I do the same. This is for my daughter and the grandkids and a nice document of our lives. The most special use of the camera! Did you get out this weekend mate? I’ll off to watch your channel now actually!
@@colinosullivan I did get out. Visited my daughters in north Phoenix and burned up a roll of Arista 400 in a toy camera. An ol' man has to play with camera's every once in a while.
@@ChuckAbles never shot Arista. How is it? How far are you from Phoenix? It’s very likely I’ll be in Phoenix over the next year or two. We should do a shoot.
I'm just a couple hours north of Phoenix. That would be cool to do a shoot together. Keep me posted. I like Arista. Developes well with the Caffenol recipe.
Thanks Colin for the beautiful and evocative photograph. Most I'm sure will connect with the loneliness of taking the road less travelled - I do for sure. The photographs I've taken (most of which are on film interestingly) are emotional because of their sense of place.
Thanks mate for the kind words. Yes amazingly most of my favourites are either off my M4 or barnack. I’m glad you connected with it. I definitely am most likely to be found on the road less traveled. 🤣 you been out taking photos recently?
@@colinosullivan Love an old Leica, I sometimes use my Barnack or an M3 - which I really enjoy. I was out today taking some photographs of the river Severn, a beautiful cold sunny morning before the rain came.
@@paulferguson1921 glad you got some descent weather. I woke to unbelievable Atlantic winds and torrential rain after a lovely day yesterday. I’d the m10r in the bag but that where it stayed!!! 🤣 and the crazy weather continued. That northerly winds right now are biting cold. Have a good week over there mate.
@@paulferguson1921 the last few years ireland has had snow in March or April as opposed to January or February. I’m surprised we haven’t had much in the way of snow down south! Let’s see, wouldn’t mind a few days of it so I can go shoot in the mountains!
Hi Colin, you are my Philosopher of the day ! The picture you are showing us here is really special creating a unique atmosphere. I watched again your video "Snow in Vienna" from a year ago. All beautiful images ! Next time I will certainly try an FP4 on my IIIg. I did not saw you using a lightmeter ? Did you only used the F16 rule ? Which aperture did you use in the snow ? Keep on smiling ! Greatings, Roger ;-)
Hey mate, yeah no lightmeter but I did meter when leaving the accommodation and I saw f4 1/200 and so this was f5.6 at 1/100. I’d love to try the iiig. I am far from a philosopher but I have to say I’m enjoying the non gear side of photography. Thanks mate for the support 🙏
I really like that photo. I remember watching your video and seeing that photo for the first time. I was immediately drawn to it because it is exactly my style and it evoked emotion in me. Thank you so much for the video. Hope you are well, cheers from Czech republic.
Thanks mate. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yeah that Vienna video I really enjoyed making that one. Czech Republic is high on my list. I hope you’ve a great week. 👏
Well now, that is interesting - I thought when I saw that photo in your Vienna vid that it was a self portrait. There seemed a real identification with the figure that resonated for you - a personal truth in it for sure. I'm often a fan of 'walk away portraits,' I think you can tell a lot about a person that the face seeks to hide. I have a fantastic portrait of Samuel Beckett in a similar scene.
Yeah I’ve never done those portraits but sounds fun to set a scene for sure. Yeah this photo for sure could have been a self portrait, certainly I could have been that guy! I’m just happy it came out as that whole trip I had wondered was i underexposed fp4 but it was perfect. I was delighted with it. I was back in Vienna At Christmas and I’m working on the video but there is a bit of work in that one 😊😬

I think it's a fabulous photo that in this case the use of black and white film has helped enormously to add to the emotion.
Thanks mate. 🙏 yea This was ideal for black and white and his black clothing were amazing. Perfect mate !!
