    One of my favorite cities, and so wonderful for photography. The people are friendly, the food delicious, the architecture sublime, and the beer…oh, the beer!
    A walk down the Westbanhof road is a must - so many wonderful camera stores! Stopping in at Jo Geier is like being a child in a candy shop. I purchased a war time Leica IIIc in Vienna, and it is a souvenir that I shall treasure.

      Wow a Leica iiic would be incredible. I had my eye out for one for years but unfortunately nothing that was in ok condition and not expensive. I felt lucky to get this on mint condition work box and papers etc. it’s special. But I use it. It’s not going to sit in the glass cabinet. Vienna was lovely and the people are very friendly for sure. The vibe in winter is lovely. I will go back for the Christmas markets. Cheers mate

    Nice to see a lovely Barnack Leica put to good use. That iiif is so small, paired with the collapsible 50/3.5 Elmar. Great shots, I love shooting in snow!

    Nice camera. And anyone who hasn’t seen it in person. It really is amazing how small it is. You can see why Bresson was so in love with it when it came out that he could just use something so small. I think the M10 kept that same idea.

      Mate it is something else isn't it. I love it. I always a roll through it every month to keep it moving. Like anything old the more use it or lose it. :) I'm enjoying figuring out the M10-R which is fairly high tech compared to what I'm used it!

    Ahh Vienna! Such a great city (so says a Third Man super fan!) and you were lucky to get snow! Some great shots and the snow had such texture with the Ilford. I loved the revolving door shot and the snow covered bicycles, but man you did well there. I must get back - last time I was there I went to The Magic Fllute at the opera house... And... Just... Wow. Well worth the walk over to the brilliant little Third Man Museum (true, I'm biased) - many of the original film cameras and many many many stills. Great old bars around there too. Leica cameras are famous for their sharp lenses & reliability. The IIIF is a well known and popular model, using the LTM39 thread mount lens. Leica gives you incredible results--what film did you use and did you use a light meter? Nice

So that left me one option! Turned out i enjoyed the simplicity and no electronics to worry about and also just the 50mm elmar! I have to say it was really refreshing! Also the ilford fp4 again showing why I love that film. Thanks for dropping by and commenting mate 🙏

    That was wonderful! Love the photographs. Vienna is beautiful. I was wondering, though…saw that you were looking thru your view finder and focusing. I’m curious was that just for the sake of video, because I focus thru one window and compose thru the viewfinder.

    • @colinosullivan
      @colinosullivan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You know it’s lovely to hear of somebody enjoying any one of the video. Vienna is special and we’re heading back at the end of the year. If you have a look at the rest of my videos you’ll notice I’ve no help with a camera person, here I did so one or two shots was me doing it for the camera person. But just so you know how I usually focus, I’d usually focus inl the focusing window on the iiif and then I always move to the coke shoe mounted viewfinder. The only time I focus when not looking through the focus patch is if somebody walks across and I want to pull focus. I was mostly shooting f4 and f5.6 so focusing was not that critical. Glad you liked it mate. It was so much fun. I used my last rolls recently. Time to get some more film.

    Aloha Colin! Sorry for slacking on watching your videos, but I am catching up! Awesome black and white photos that brought me back to my photojournalism days. I actually owned one of the older screw mount Leica III, but with a 50mm Summitar lens. If I remember correctly, the camera had a shutter issue, so I mostly used the lens with a more modern Leica M with an adapter. I may of asked you this in a past video, but can you share your "post" shooting process with the rolls of film you shot. The photos look very good, which can be hard to do even with the best scanning, although I am guessing the light was fairly even (flat?) with the snowy weather? (What would I know about snowy weather in Hawaii!?) Mahalo, Thomas

    • @colinosullivan
      @colinosullivan  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Thomas, welcome back and good timing, I just up my first video in months tonight! I tried so hard to get a clean summitar lens as I love the character but I didn’t have much luck as it turns out. So for Vienna I’d 5 rolls I shot over 3 days. 3 rolls of hp5 and 2 rolls of fp4. I love how the fp4 turned out and those were all in snow. Yes flat lighting but snow has a way of seeming like their is a glare so when I metered i overexposed a stop. I developed the fp4 in rodinal. And I scanned these on my Plustek optifilm 8200ai. No real editing as such. I’ll have to check my development notes but I was super happy with the fp4 photos. To me they’ve real character. Let me know what you think of the latest video. How have you been in Hawaii?

      @@colinosullivan Aloha Colin! I guess I wasn't too much behind in watching your videos then! Thanks for the detailed reply and including your film "post-processing." Yes, I would think at least one stop of compensation would be necessary, unless you are taking an incident reading and i would guess snow would also act as a reflector of sorts, so very even lighting? The mention of Rodinal brought me back to a method I tried after reading an article in a photo magazine. Basically it would mean over-exposing (metering the shadows) and using a very dilute Rodinal with very little agitation. Since Rodinal is not a fine grain developer, this technique worked best with slower films such as Agfa APX 25 which I used in a Pentax 6X7. I also shot some 35mm too. Good to see that the scanner you mentioned does an excellent job. I am guessing the software (SilverFast?) makes a difference too? Wow, it's been a few decades since I scanned film, but I have tons of negatives that is just sitting here. Some may be in bad condition too! Not sure if I am up to the task! Enjoy, Thomas

    Great photos - shutter noise got very annoying - hearing it once was enough.

    Don't understand the scene at 4:41. Adjusting the lens focus while looking through the external viewfinder?!? I'm baffled as how that would work...

    • @colinosullivan
      @colinosullivan  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sometimes time switching between the focus patch which is small on these and the external finder the photos gone. So when you see me do this it means I know the elmar very well and I’m at f8 or f11 and I just guess the position of the distance scale. I sometimes have to remind myself which lens I’m using and you’ll see me readjust. Btw I love the external finder. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoyed it. 🙏

    Amazing what that old elmar can do. What developer do you use?

      Thanks John for commenting. Yes I’m always blown away by the Max Berek lens. You usually only hear the Barnack name but what a lens. Also on a day like that I was able to collapse it and put it in the pocket of my coat. I sometimes use HC 110 developer but this time it was my old friend Rodinal, which I think on fp4 is amazing. I am starting to think all my favourites now are that combination. Can I ask what country your in? I’m always interested to know where people tune in from. Cheers

    Love the video can I ask did you meter off the snow Colin

    • @colinosullivan
      @colinosullivan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robin, I actually metered at the beginning of a walk off the sort of grey building walls and then overexposed another stop. If I meter off the snow the meter would be considering my white snow as middle grey so I’d need to overexposure usually by two stops. Generally fp4 seems really flexible. I don’t think I’ve any fo4 photos i would see we’re not exposed well. Even I was surprised 😮 🤣 where are your shooting these days ?

    Hello Colin. Another great video! I’m considering returning to film for some situations and wondering about scanners. Can you tell me what type of film scanner you use?

    • @colinosullivan
      @colinosullivan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard, I’m currently using a Plustek which only lets you scan 35mm which is really all I shoot so it works well for me. I use Silverfast scanning sofrware and it’s works reasonably well. I know Nikon had some better scanners than did both 35mm and 120 medium format sizes. Let me know if you’d like me to do a short video on it. 👍

      Thank you. I've been wondering about that one. Seeing the quality of your images is certainly a strong endorsement. I would love to see a short video on your experience with it.

      @@richardcirillo I’ll definitely put together something on the scanner. Yes I’d say I’m getting better scans now than i used to.

    How did you meter each scene?

    • @colinosullivan
      @colinosullivan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apologies, I wrote a huge reply two weeks ago and it didn’t save! Here goes. So for film on snow what I tend to do is meter off a grey wall of a building if I can. Given there was no sun at all but thick low snow clouds the light didn’t change much. I use a phone all at the beginning of my walk called “lightmetervm” and it is a sort of light meter wheel. I find it easy and accurate tbh. I think my shutter speeds on fp4 at f5.6 was around 1/100 or 1/200 on the Leica iiif. Oddly all my fp4 photos always seem to be exactly as I imagined them. Actually I’m doing a couple of large prints from this Vienna trip for my house and I’m exited to see them up. Can I ask where you are from and what do you photograph? Cheers

    Hi! I like your video and pitures very much, but I could not watch it to the end because the clicking noise becomes sooo nervy... Sorry, but without that I would like your channel a lot more. Thanx and all the best!

      Thanks Stephen for the feedback. I’m currently editing my next video, from the Burren National park, yes the shutter from the iiif barnack was possibly a tad too loud. On my next video let me know if the toned down shutter is an improvement. I’ll be uploading it Friday. Cheers
