2024 Roar - Aorangi Forest Park - 338 Savage Lapua Magnum
In the 2024 roar we head out to try to shoot a red or fallow stag. As part of this hunt we are going to attempt to locate a blind we have previously seen from last year to camp and shoot from.
On this hunt, we see close to 20 deer, mostly fallow in mobs and due to the speed at which they are travelling, we are unable to get the deer on camera.
For the hunt we are using the 338 Lapua Magnum with a 285 grain projectile. Upon seeing a fallow deer presented side on, I take the opportunity to get a meat animal given the frequent changes in the weather. The projectile is devastating to the deer, effectively gutting it on impact, with the deer running around 20m before dropping.
Whilst this is a fairly good sized hunting area, I run into 3 great chaps from the Wellington Region, who I get to share a few yarns with, and who also managed to bag a fallow stag the previous day.

    with respect mate you need a lot more practice on targets before getting into shooting animals at long range.the first animal you mentioned no wind as it was blowing hard and the gut shot one you said the bullet drifted back when there was no wind at all.lots of misses and also that horrible gut shot, are the rifles your using proven long range rigs?just because its a big hitter doesn't make it a long range rifle. Im not having a crack-this is constructive criticism but your vids are getting hard to watch.

    I know you can edit whatever you want to show in your video. But shooting animals at long range by luck is totally horrible! Lucky it’s a clean miss but what if you just wound the animal and let it surfed? I know it happens to everyone, what we can do is do our best to avoid it. No hard to do your load development and true your ballistic in different range, then practice more for target shooting before you pull the trigger on live animals. Lots of hater out there for long range hunting think about it, and respect the wild life please!

    Hi Mate. Best advise i have is to validate at 1000m (ie, a lot further than you ever plan to take animals). For my setup, this lead to me needing to adjust my per click setting for my elevation dial to 0.234 MOA in the Strelok App. I had chronograph and range finder, so scope click inaccuracy was the only thing i could adjust to make the ballistic numbers work. Now setup works well. Just wish i had done it earlier. I reload too. Good to have confidence in each round.

    • @longrangehuntingadventures
      @longrangehuntingadventures 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great advice. I checked my 338 Lap Mag at 1150m a week ago and adjusted it from that but will pull that back to 1000m and recheck. Will get a chronograph as I'll need that for reloading too.

      @@longrangehuntingadventures 1150m even better. Always worth validating on a target so you can measure group size and elevation error, but not always easy finding a spot where you can set up a target at those distances.

      Hey Tim, I use a ballistic app and estimated the wind. I used a 300 Win Mag with 200gr ELD ammo. On my later trip to the same place I checked my accuracy on a rock (maybe 6" in size) at 594 yards and shattered the rock. I can only assume the wind was going the opposite direction down range. I’m generally been more of a stalker at our locations up this way but loved your open country down there so definitely keen to hit same more areas like that again. Man that’s a awesome range to be shooting at but definitely understand the importance of a level rifle. I actually just chucked a bubble level on my scope last night and man what a difference that made with targets today. With my shorty I would be happy to reach the 400y - 450 yard mark accurately this year if I could but long range is newer to me as most of my deer stalking has been 5y to 200y lol. I had a 300wm but sold that recently and plan to get another next year to open up the range a little more again in some of these more open spots even if I have to travel more.

      @@longrangehuntingadventures I slept a night in the tent just one gut up the valley from where you shot the deer on the 21st. There was a chamois buck by himself there about where you climbed to the next day.

      Thanks mate. Yeah the 338 would be a beast without the muzzle break! It kicks like a mule as it is. 😂

    Hey mate, awesome content. I passed by you and figured you were glassing just a little ways out from the Base hut. I was in my blue toyota prado so was good to see this pop up on youtube. I did read the intentions where you mentioned this. Good luck with your future hunting. 🤙🏽

      G'day mate, I have to say it's great being back on the mainland and meeting so many good people. Appreciate the feedback ref the content. Hope your hunt went well. Certainly the terrain was a challenge for me this time with snow. Safe hunting.

    I hope you got permission to hunt there! It’s become miles too popular since I first visited it in 1993!

      Hey Josh, I'm ex army and always shot out to 300m. In the last 3-years I have applied the skills and knowledge from the army to longer ranges.
