Tararua roar 2023

Prior to going out hunting for red deer which have begun to roar, we take the opportunity to check the zero of the Tikka 300 Win Mag and zero in the Savage 338 Lapua Magnum.
On the 4th day we locate a deer at 400 yards at the top of a slip. Shooting at a steep angle, we take time to sit the rifle on the pack to gain enough elevation to get the cross hairs onto the deer.
We run into a fellow tramper/hunter (Shane) who was in for the night delivering beers to his mates further up the valley, only to come out empty handed after they had spent several days glassing another slip seeing no deer.
After giving me a hand to located the deer, I give Shane the front legs and the remainder of the venison is going to a mate to feed his family.

I thought Roar video would be about Roaring stags not a hind at 400? be some decent meat at least, well done

It was full on this weekend with a lot of shots being taken. Alas no stags seen. It was nice to give away all of this meat to others.

Hey Luke, thanks for reaching out. Saw only one animal (twice) and nothing else. The weather turned on me and the mist makes it impossible to use the range finder. I ran into another group who also found slim pickings, with few stags seen. How did you get on with your trip later in the week?

@@longrangehuntingadventures hi seen one young Stag when we went back in. I seen 3 stags all up over a week and pin pointed 5 and roared to them the wind made it hard

Kia Ora bro, What day was this? Was out a week ago and only heard one roaring over 2 days

Kia ora mate, I believe this was 7 April. I was in there again today and there are still a handful of stags moaning up high. Only one answered back and came in for a look. We could hear branches breaking but the wind was not in our favour and I'm sure the stag winded us.
