  • Join my children as I as we head north of Wellington to one of our favorite spots for long range shooting. On this adventure we send a pill down range at a 8-point red deer.

A new hunt will be out this Friday and then we are switching to using the 338 Lap Magnum for the remainder of the year. The next hunt has a deer on the deck.

Chrono is a must, reloads are a must and validation on a target is a must!

Hi Mate. Best advise i have is to validate at 1000m (ie, a lot further than you ever plan to take animals). For my setup, this lead to me needing to adjust my per click setting for my elevation dial to 0.234 MOA in the Strelok App.
I had chronograph and range finder, so scope click inaccuracy was the only thing i could adjust to make the ballistic numbers work.
Now setup works well. Just wish i had done it earlier.
I reload too. Good to have confidence in each round.

Great advice. I checked my 338 Lap Mag at 1150m a week ago and adjusted it from that but will pull that back to 1000m and recheck. Will get a chronograph as I'll need that for reloading too.

@@longrangehuntingadventures 1150m even better. Always worth validating on a target so you can measure group size and elevation error, but not always easy finding a spot where you can set up a target at those distances.

Great video! bummer about the stag had the same thing this weekend. Where are you validating your rifle out to 1150? I've been trying to find a place to validate out to 1000 but have had no luck

I validated the gun at the northern end of the Aorangi Forest Park. Theres a track heading north up the ridge from the carpark. I was shooting across to a slip.

Looks like a bit low at the shot I thought, bugger! Long range is definitely a science ay

Easy to see the kiss on the computer/tv vs on the camera onsite. Gutted but as you say, its definitely a science which we keep going back for fine tuning. Moving to hunting with the 338 Lap this year. A great rifle to shoot.

I know you can edit whatever you want to show in your video. But shooting animals at long range by luck is totally horrible! Lucky it’s a clean miss but what if you just wound the animal and let it surfed? I know it happens to everyone, what we can do is do our best to avoid it. No hard to do your load development and true your ballistic in different range, then practice more for target shooting before you pull the trigger on live animals. Lots of hater out there for long range hunting think about it, and respect the wild life please!
