Morelia Mexico: Safety, Crime & Reality Check
Morelia is a breathtaking colonial city, rich in history, culture, and charm-but what about safety? With its UNESCO heritage status, vibrant arts scene, and affordable cost of living, Morelia has a lot to offer. However, like many places in Mexico, it also faces crime challenges that concern both locals and potential expats.

    Has a mexican I don't think that the probelm with the gentrification comes from the foreigners, I bellive that the problem comes from the local business people who rises the cost to take advantage from the foreigner incoming, if the foreigner really wants to help they should prioritize a fair price and not the inflated ones, but that requires proper research and some times choose a less wellknow or less popular place.

    I visited the area shortly before retiring. My wife and I were hoping it would live up to the hype, but found it subpar for all the reasons you mentioned. We can afford life in N. California and will remain here, where natural beauty is all around us and the weather is perfect. I suppose that if we lived in Texas or a similar place, Ajijic would be appealing. However, we decided it was not for us. There are better places in Mexico to spend time.

Beautiful architecture, perfect weather, surrounded by forests and mountains. Delicious and cheap food,beautiful and varied crafts, and a safe place to live. Excellent roads. Señora, please continue with your studies of Spanish, as your pronunciation needs work. You said déjame pronouncing a soft j sound as in Portuguese, when it is pronounced as an "h" in English. I appreciate your efforts in every way to align with Mexican values, and studying Spanish with Pimsleur CDs or similar. Verbal conjugation can be challenging, and vocabulary of course, but the good things are that almost always the letters of the alphabet are pronounced the same in any word. There are subtle exceptions.

    A couple years ago in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico ( border to southern Texas) I had an ultrasound for $60 because I had internal lower back pain. My MD back in California sent me for an ultrasound because insurance couldn’t accept the Mexican one. I was quoted $900 cash price since Obamacare wouldn’t cover it. Needless to say, I told them no way and informed them of what I had paid in Mexico. The difference between Mexico and USA is that in Mexico, it was a one man show in a very modest but clean facility. In the USA, they probably need at least 3-5 employees earning top $$ to do an ultrasound in an expensive facility. There is a lot of overhead in the USA.

    Mexico is completely incapable (and unwilling) to do anything about these drug cartels. It's a completely failed state in so many respects. Their main advantage is that they are right next to us and can take advantage of trade. It's not even real trade, but intra company transfers among US companies.

    My first trip to Morelia was in 1998 with a friend of mine who was returning from the U.S. after many years of work. I stayed with him and his family for about a week. We have been friends ever since and I stay with him for a few days every trip down there. I married a women from a nearby rancho, a few miles off the highway to Pátzcuaro, and we are nearly finished with our home in the mountains about 30 minutes from Morelia. We are very excited and looking forward to spending more time in Morelia and at the rancho as we approach retirement. I am not considered a tourist any longer and amongst my friends in Morelia, I am family. At the rancho, I am a nuero, cuñado, tío, y sobrino. I am also a padrino and compadre. It takes time to assimilate into the Mexican culture, but with humility, generosity, and humor you will find your way into the hearts of your neighbors and friends. Viva Mexico, viva estados unidos, viva la gente mano en mano.

    As I naive young man in the ‘60’s, I chased Hemingway, Michener and others to the south of Spain looking for a romanticized (and fictional, as it turned out) life. By the time I got there in ‘68, Malaga, Torremolinos, and the entire Costa del Sol was out-of-reach expensive (gentrified is the new term); crime-ridden and awash in a primarily non-Spanish speaking population. Fortunately, I learned this lesson young.

      @WillScarlet-zc2iw วันที่ผ่านมา

      I bet that when living in the States, you lived in the suburbs. Though well-intended, your attitude about crime reflects an American suburban mentality which is fraught with fear/paranoia about city living, i.e., people afraid of the outside world, accustomed only to the hygienic, sterile world of suburban malls, and, thus, should be factored in by anyone considering Morelia, or anywhere in Mexico, as a new home. Thank you for your overview.

      @@WillScarlet-zc2iw Do you live in Mexico if you don't mind me asking? Almost everyone lives in suburbia nowadays and depends on a car. In a typical US neighborhood you can't get anywhere without a car. Even to walk out of a suburban community is quite a task.

    Goodness... first of all, I commend you for making such a thorough, comprehensive, informative video--not just on the heels of an accident, but partially during the first stages oft it. You are a tough cookie! I am glad to know you are okay. We have lived for nearly 13 years as full time, permanent residents of Mexico and have received ALL of our medical care (except for dental implants) here in Mexico--including a 6-hour spinal surgery in Querétaro that got me up and out of a wheelchair, a radical hysterectomy in Celaya, hyperbaric chamber treatments for my husband who was poisoned by carbon monoxide in Lake Chapala, and a host of other treatments--orthopedic, allergists, orthodontist, general dental care--for our now 20-year-old twin children who were 8 when we immigrated. Any one of these surgeries or procedures would have broke the piggy bank in the States. As you know, there is good and not so good everywhere and it sounds like you are on the right path to creating community and support networks for yourself. Enjoying your channel! Like a friend from Nicaragua told me, “It’s always a fiesta, but what do you do when the party is over?” And remember when go to these resorts, you’re laundering drug money. I lived there for about seven years. It’s not a cheap country. There are fees and taxes on everything. There are many products you cannot get there. Mexico has tariffs and taxes on everything. An example is a Copeland piston compressor for a refrigeration system. The price is three or four times the U S price.
