I took a sabatical from work 2009-2013 and lived in Guatemala, San Cristobal de Las Casas, and Puerto Escondido. All were different and wonderful experiences. The best thing to do to comfort a dog when they are scared, surprisingly it’s the opposite of what you would expect. You should do nothing especially not try and comfort them with soft sweet talk. That actually makes them more nervous. Best to do if you can, put on loud music and start dancing with your dogs. If they see you happy and not worried they will know there is no worries. Your dog will look up to you for validation of the mood and situation. It’s similar to when your toddler falls and scrapes his knees. Just stand him up and redirect his attention and get him back playing. This is good advice from professional trainers I have had great success with my two dogs. Love your videos.

That story of some Americans suing the owners of GABYS is 'horrific'!! Gosh I hope the suit was not successful. There is a similar story in either PV or Cancun. The Mariachis played along the beach in a certain stretch and the wealthy foreigners complained to the condo board and they were forced to leave the area. Foreigners want America in Mexico for less money. The thing is...there is alot of freedom in Mexico and foreigners just dont know it or they dont like it. They want it to be like it is in the USA...rules and regulations. Americans are bossy bullies and NOBODY LIKE THAT. Heart breaking for sure.
One thing foreigners must bear in mind is the noise levels: Mexicans play music at extreme volumes whether it’s a party or just while cleaning the house. In Europe we’re very conscious of noise pollution and it’s detrimental effect. The Mexicans equate loud music with being happy and joyous and are oblivious to the concept. That’s the biggest cultural clash I’ve encountered here.
@@sararichardson737It’s not a culture clash, it foreigners not respecting and adapting to the culture of the country they are in. Your post reeks of judgement of the way Mexicans listen to music. No one is forced to come if it upsets their sensibilities
I’ve fine there is a difference between stormy days in BC, Canada, and the kind in Mexico. Whenever the breeze is warm, it’s fine to be outside. Not at all the highlands of central Mexico are as chilly as Patzcuaro. I’m just a half hour away and even higher elevation, but less rain and more sun. Microclimates Be careful with the suggestions for CBD for your dog’s anxiety with the thunder. There’s evidence that it’s not healthy for dogs and I’ve personally known 2 pets who have suffered. Please DYOR. The dogs that are born here, the street dogs etc., they’re not afraid of the thunder. It’s the ones from away and the pure breeds. Not much you can do except be close and DON’T let them outside off leash, lest they run. Also, if your dog’s teeth are becoming not healthy, consider feeding a proper dog diet of meat only. The carnicerías in that area will give you free bones, and then I just buy the cheap cuts they’ll sell me. Way cheaper in the long run because your dog won’t have health issues. Kibble is 70% carbs. Dogs don’t eat carbs in the wild. There’s tons of info on this online. Tons of vets explaining the history of dog “fud. Sharing because I care about animals
Thanks for the tips! Interesting about the microclimates. It's weird because my Bernese Mountain dog doesn't get scared at all. I'll consider the fud :)

Thank you! Decided to settle, at least for a few months, in Patzcuaro, so after I look at what I've spent staying in one place for a while I will do that for sure.
I think one of the reasons I like these videos so much is because I too love dogs. As I also have dogs sensitive to loud noise... suggest getting a mild tranquilizer from the vet.
I feel so glad for your happiness! Your happiness creates an enriching space for all three of you to grow and delight in. As to Ollie... I wanted to crawl in there with her and tenderly hold her. Hurts to see someone so frightened. Grateful it eventually passes, but still.... Hasta la próxima.
Excellent. I moved to SMA last year from CA with no language skills. I loved it here and moved my furniture and belongings without checking out any other areas of MX. I am having some second thoughts about my choice. You have a great outlook on your adventure. Congratulations!
I visited Guadalajara a week ago. While there I walked a lot. Twice, out of the blue, a person on the street shouted “gringo” at me. I’m 6’3, blue eyes and was wearing shorts (I didn’t see many men in shorts while in Guadalajara). Oddly, I’m Hispanic. My parents were Puerto Rican, I was born in Mexico. Go figure. I must walk like a gringo. I’ve lived in the US all my life.
Hola. :) I live in Guadalajara. They are happy, friendly, and love many things the Gringos have produced. Most prominently, the music!! 🎵🎵 I would think shouting "gringo" was more of a compliment than a put down. And yes, usually only the tourists wear shorts... Mexicans and Foreigners alike. I hope you have a wonderful visit!!

Thank you for your content, Mora. Spring became Summer, Summer became fall, and winter. And there are many fat cows and even fat deer because everything is so green (this is not every year, unfortunately). But rain every single afternoon is not normal, but people/animals benefit from it.
Hi. So enjoying your videos. . Are you still at Alexa and Henry's? I'm trying to keep your travels straight. Im so intrigued and impressed by your sense of courage and adventure. What area of mountains is this? And did it ever get warm enough to wear shorts and tank top? I have so many questions lol. Love your dogs. How old is Shephard? And is your 1 year old a bernese?
Yes he is. He just turned one year old yesterday! My girl Olive is about 5 years old. Least that's what they told me when I adopted her. Tho I just noticed her teeth are wearing away. Maybe she's older? We will be staying at Alex's for a few months I think. So far, it's not gotten warm enough for shorts AT ALL. Ha ha but it's great for the dogs and I can go to the beach any time. Thanks for your comment!
That weather sounds like the gulf coast of Florida. It rained every day between 3-5 pm. It wasn't any big deal. You just planned around it. Thanks for the info!
Excellent video! I spent much of my career living and working overseas. I'd usually have a "honeymoon" period of about six months in a new city, where everything was wonderful and new. Then I'd settle in and get used to the customs and culture and it made for a rich life. Having a dog (one in my case) was an excellent introduction to every new place. I'd walk and walk her and quickly learn my way around. We'd make friends with neighborhood dogs and dog owners, and that made life lovely. I also had reverse culture shock on returning to the U.S. Silly story: in one non-English speaking country, I drew a map of the downtown to our offices to our homes. Signs were rare, so my hand-drawn map with physical landmarks was copied and used for years after I left. That's crazy!
Regarding your dogs. There's a product called thundershirt I think that's it's called thunder but I don't know if it's shirt or not but anyway it's like a sweater you put on your dog or cat, and it makes them feel secure it just applies a little pressure like they're wrapped up in something. You can even try putting a dog sweater on him, or even if that doesn't work or doesn't apply enough pressure you can put two dog sweaters on them. So glad you took your dogs with you. I'm thinking of moving to Mexico and I would not move without my cats so I would be bringing them with me.

I had friends in SC with dogs that were afraid of storms. The got some "weighted" dog gear like a large vest and blanket for their pets. Being a cat mom, I am grateful that my boys have become mostly immune to storms. (Cats in memory now were terrorized by fireworks, so I left the lights on and played music for them on every occasion ❤) Good luck with your babies 🍀💌 and best wishes for your travels!
If you have a house built, be careful what archetict you use. I live in a fairly nice neighborhood on a hillside. A gringo friend of mine, had a house built in another part of the barrio. We have city sewage and drainage hookup here. And part of the deal for him was to connect to this system. He went back to the States for awhile leaving the architect to build the house. A few years later, the gringo discovered that there was some difficulty connecting to the sewer system which would need to cross other private property. So, the archetict put in a make shift septic system! Unbeknownst to the owner! Another very nice, expensive, large house was built on a property at the edge of the barrio. At the time, the sewer system had not caught up to the location. So, a legitimate septic system was put in. Except, I noticed it was on a property across the street. Seemed like a problem to me. So, I enquired of the HOA as to who owned that property and would it be a problem in the future. The HOA consulted the engineer who originally built the development and was assured there was no problem. Not too long after that, the real owner of the septic property decided to do construction work there. The septic system has been totally demolished and black water is now flowing into the small canyon next to the development! The person renting the property now, admitted it was not legal, but no one has ever come to check it out! It has been about 6 months!

Real estate agents in Mexico are not required to be licensed in most states. Be careful! When I bought my property, I had some advice. You need to acquire the services of a special lawyer called a Notario. These lawyers know the real estate laws and do much of the work that a licensed agent would do in the US. They give you official paperwork which gives you guarantees that the property is free and clear, for instance. The "Real Estate" agent for the seller advised me not to use a notario and save some money. No thanks, I went to a recommended notario and have had no problems!
I hate to leave her alone like that though. I try to snuggle her in bed, but eventually she wants to go back to the bathroom when she's scared. Luckily we've had a break in all the thunder.

Another awesome video. I'm so glad you are happy! I can tell how relieved, astonished and grateful you are. That's so great to see. Is it OK to communicate with you as a friend?
My dog was horrified and shook while also trying to get into the tiniest spaces. I used rescue remedy in her moments of discomfort. There is a pheromone spray that may have been helpful. I give cbd (no thc, It's toxic to dogs) about an hour ahead of time. If you can find a thundercoat or make something with the same squeeze effect, I found it helpful for her as well. I turn the music up loud, sometimes maybe even 2 different sources of music or other sounds. During the worst storms I also sat on the floor in the corner, with a dog leaning in on either side of me. Good luck! My apologies if any of this is redundant. I just stumbled on your channel And have Begun to watch your enjoyable And informative videos.
@MoraMargaret There is a little patch on the thunder coat where I would spray one little squirt of the pheromone spray. It seemed like everything together made a difference. Especially if I had storm warnings and gave her/them cbd approximately 1½ hour ahead of storm arrival. It's like it would sort of knock her out. She would lay down at the base of the cabinet under the radio and go to sleep for hours. But In the absolute worst storms or if we got caught off guard, nothing much really mattered and I had to just hold her. I would still do it all and it would help some it just might not completely stop the shaking and knock her completely out, to sleep through. Good luck! ❤️
I have lived in Mexico for 14 years and counting , in all that time I have used only one ATM card , never a credit card , only use ATM at get peso's out , always pay in cash.
@MoraMargaret I use both ATM and credit cards. I only use an ATM for cash and not for purchases. In the US it's the same. I speak Spanish which is lucky for me. I started in high school and volunteered in Mexico and South America during the summer. I've continued it for the last 40 years. Immersion and continually watching Spanish videos and programs weekly.
And let’s be real. I live in Charlotte North Carolina. There is a huge Mexican community there like 26,000 Mexicans. They have carved out a section of the city where they have neighborhoods and businesses and all of that and I think it is great. They are wonderful people And hard workers and a pleasure to be around. However, in Mexico can scream at us go gringo but in the US if we yelled, go home Mexican, they would consider us wrong. That is hypocritical.
Hi I really enjoyed your video. I use a all natural drops that I buy from from my veterinarian. A few drops before a storm the dog will calm down and sometimes fall asleep. There are several varieties you can buy them at petsmart. They are very inexpensive.
Another great video. As my wife and I research retiring to Mexico we often find "paid consultants" or "transitional consultants" on TH-cam. I'm sure you've seen them. Some have some great informative videos. I was wondering how did you prepare and research moving to Mexico before your exploratory trip?
I’ve loved Mexico for many years, and have been here on vacations. I watched a lot of TH-cam videos and researched online about renting, safety, driving etc.. I had an exceptionally easy time with getting a temp residency visa, unless you count the four hour drive there and back to the consulate 😉

They want it to be like it is in the USA...rules and regulations. Americans are bossy bullies and NOBODY LIKE THAT. Heart breaking for sure.
I love my country but in some ways it's gone off the deep end. "there is a lot of freedom in Mexico" is one of the reasons I love being here!
I can’t see how that suit would favour the incomers.Gaby’s had been there for years before they turned up. Last in first out!
That’s the biggest cultural clash I’ve encountered here.
sarah... same very much so in Colombia!!
Microclimates
Be careful with the suggestions for CBD for your dog’s anxiety with the thunder.

My dogs have always slept with me (13 years and counting) if a big storm approaches we just tuck ourselves in and wait it out, and they are fine. I've noticed that they are no longer very upset at storms, but they still like the excuse to go to bed for a cuddle
Thanks for your comment. When she's really scared she won't come out of the shower, but at least the thunder comes and goes pretty quick.
Thanks for the video. Very thoughtful and interesting content.
Muchas gracias.
@@MoraMargaret you are a very charming talented TH-cam creator, great to see your channel getting more attention. Your format is great and not one most use where you speak some then go to video then return to speak again. Your videos are wonderful, showed me how nice Guantagato is
I enjoy your videos.
I appreciate that!
We live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. When a Thunder Storms rolls through I put our English Black. Lab in the small enclosed toilet area with a fluffy blanket and close the door. The small dark space calms him.
Thanks for your tip!
I'm loving your videos and thoughts on Mexico. I'm wondering if you could do a piece on monthly expenses during your travels and how that might look like when you settle down in some location. Thanks!
Thank you! Decided to settle, at least for a few months, in Patzcuaro, so after I look at what I've spent staying in one place for a while I will do that for sure.
Very good idea.
Great points! Well done👍💖
Thunder shirt for the dog!
I think one of the reasons I like these videos so much is because I too love dogs.
As I also have dogs sensitive to loud noise... suggest getting a mild tranquilizer from the vet.
I just got a thunder coat to try. The vet would be the next step. Thanks for your comment :)
Nice video, Mora. You look dramatically more calm, peaceful, and happy than in your videos from the US. You've been through alot.
Thanks! It has been a dramatic change for me and I'm so happy about it!
Thank you for the good information.
bien por ti!!
Thank you, that's so sweet.

You are welcome to our beautiful country, michoacan is beautiful, im glad you enjoying mexico, im f4om morelia .
Awesome video.
❤Nice video enjoy Mexico I will be back sometime 🎉🎉
Excellent. I moved to SMA last year from CA with no language skills. I loved it here and moved my furniture and belongings without checking out any other areas of MX. I am having some second thoughts about my choice. You have a great outlook on your adventure. Congratulations!
Thank you! Good luck to you where ever you might end up!
@@cwisaac22 thanks for the positive feedback. Many years ago, when I lived in Puerto Rico, my teenage years, the word was an insult.
“I must walk like a gringo” I’ve heard similar in many countries. We must walk a certain recognizable way. For better or worse that’s the way we are.
That’s so kind!
There are tall, fair-skinned Mexicans in Jalisco, so it must be the shorts and your overall demeanor.
Love your channel, so happy for you!!! Thank you for sharing. Saludos from Oklahoma City!

Can you mention where are you exactly in Mexico when you are filming this video is so beautiful the view of the lake . And name of the AirB&B you stay and prices please and thank you for sharing . 🤙😎🌎🇵🇦🇺🇸👍🙌🙏
I’m sorry, I don’t say EXACTLY where I am. I’m working on a page on my website to connect people to the great rentals I’ve been to. MoraMargaret.com
Thank you for your content, Mora. I’m contemplating a move to Mexico and I look forward to embracing the culture, language, etc. I feel it’s only right to be respectful and thankful to be a part of another culture. That being said, I’m finding that some people on social media are very discouraging about even trying to move there. 😢 Makes it hard to believe who is telling the truth. 🤷♀️ I will be a remote worker with an online business. I am currently a school teacher.
Why and how are they discouraging? I've had a wonderful time here, and if you have a job you can do online, even better!
There are vest/coat you put on a dog that is frightened.
Its like swaddling a baby sorta.
Love your videos, love Mexicos beautiful people and country.
thank you!
Subcribed 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That's great! Sounds like you're comfortable with travel and living in new places. Always nice to have a canine companion ;)
There are little coats that fit snuggly on digs that help them to feel secure during storms . You could give her relaxing medication also .
I just got a thunder coat! Gracias!
Yourr so welcome mora . I love your videos . Im a retired RN. And want to come to mexico ! @@MoraMargaret
darn, that answers a question i've had for a couple of weeks. i doubt i'll ever see you in Arizona again. and that's a good thing :)
I don't know how to take that, but thanks for watching.

Do it! I just got a thunder shirt for Olive, just in time for the dry season ;)
Hola me encanto ru canal y tus videos, muchas gracias por querer a mi mexico🎉🎉, yo vivo en Cancún y mi sueño es vivir en el centro de mexico!! Bienvenida a Mexico❤
Muchas gracias! Tienes un pais Hermoso. El centro de a Mexico es muy especial. Una dia todo el mundo lo sabra!
Poor Ollie. Don’t have any good ideas, just continue to comfort. Maybe a favorite toy. I would still love to visit the central mountains of Mexico.
Awww your two side kicks are really having a time with the weather hopefully they will adjust to the noise. New subbie 😊
Your dogs are too cute! Maybe playing soft music could help them :)
Hello, look up for thunder shirt for pets. Maybe that helps.
Nice videos, btw. 😊
Gracias! Just got a thunder coat when I was in the States and it does seem to help :)
Of course You as every else are welcome..
Can you tell me where you crossed with your car into Mexico and what highway you recommend to drive to where you are from the border
American Costco CityBank card. No fees in Mexico.
But you will be charged 8 percent more if you enter Mexican costco. Great card.
I know. I use it in El Paso and
Juarez mx.
Is that right? I just went to Costco, I’ll have to look at my receipt.
That answered my question about your fluency in Spanish earlier. Have you moved to Mexico permanently ? Thank you for sharing ! ❤❤
I have temp residency visa for one year. I don't know what the future will bring :)
My lab benefits from the interior small bathroom with a blanket, lights out, door closed.
I hate to leave her alone like that though. I try to snuggle her in bed, but eventually she wants to go back to the bathroom when she's scared. Luckily we've had a break in all the thunder.
To comfort a dog during a thunder storm or fireworks it is best to simply be there for them. I do not recommend giving them any kind of drug.
I am Mexican, and while having lived most of my life in California, I’m still qualified to comment, from the perspective of a Mexican, who is allowed to critique Mexico, while IN Mexico. Only MEXICANS! From your vibe, I very much doubt YOU will get anything but love from my paisanos! 😁🙏
So kind :)
Your dogs are so cute 🥰
Is a heavy vest for dogs 🐶and horses 🐎 for anxiety
Another awesome video. I'm so glad you are happy! I can tell how relieved, astonished and grateful you are. That's so great to see. Is it OK to communicate with you as a friend?
Sure. Thanks for being happy that I'm happy ;)
Poor sweet Ollie. Where are you in this video?
Near Patzcuaro in Michoacan.
I'm glad you found my channel and thanks for the suggestions! I just got a thunder coat in time for the dry season ;)
That's great. Keeps it simple :)
I can't argue with that. You're right. I'm glad everyone's living in harmony in Charlotte!
Hi I really enjoyed your video. I use a all natural drops that I buy from from my veterinarian. A few drops before a storm the dog will calm down and sometimes fall asleep. There are several varieties you can buy them at petsmart. They are very inexpensive.
Great tip! I wonder if it's ok to give them often. We're getting daily thunder here.
where were you overlooking that lake? So beautiful.
Youre such a good dog Mom
Another great video. As my wife and I research retiring to Mexico we often find "paid consultants" or "transitional consultants" on TH-cam. I'm sure you've seen them. Some have some great informative videos. I was wondering how did you prepare and research moving to Mexico before your exploratory trip?
I’ve loved Mexico for many years, and have been here on vacations. I watched a lot of TH-cam videos and researched online about renting, safety, driving etc.. I had an exceptionally easy time with getting a temp residency visa, unless you count the four hour drive there and back to the consulate 😉

what's the lake in the background? Patzcuaro? lovely! do you ever get lonely on your travels? are you planning to settle down somewhere? I'm worried about my dog being scared of the fireworks when we come....
No, I don't get lonely. I am planning to settle somewhere, now in Patzcuaro, later maybe somewhere else. There's nothing to do about fireworks. It's both delightful, and scary for the dogs. Actually, my other dog isn't bothered at all.
I live in Cancún. We only see fireworks on dec 12, 24 and 31st. Mostly in small towns is where they have them, but not like every week
