Building up the Backyard Bass Pond. Caring for the bait, feeder fish and of course, The Bass!
Tagging a Replacement Bass for the Backyard Pond
Tagging a largemouth bass for the backyard pond. It's time to get another bass in the pond to hopefully increase the chances of the largemouth bass spawning, hopefully it's not too late. We tag the bass with a numbered tag using is simple tagging gun. The plan is for this big largemouth to transition into the pond and join the other two largemouth and possibly join in spawning. We send the cameras underwater to see what kind of fish we can get a view of.

Adding Pond Dye & Gravel Structure to the Backyard Bass Pond

Adding Pond Dye and Water Column Clarifier to the backyard bass pond. I like to throw a packet of pond dye into the pond every month or so. The dye tints the water short term, and blocks sunlight from reaching deep into the pond. With a lack of sunlight into the pond, deeper water weed growth is inhibited. The liquid water column clarifier is a beneficial bacteria that fixes nitrogen in the pon...
More Bass Problems at the Backyard Pond
มุมมอง 9916 หลายเดือนก่อน
We've got more problems at the backyard bass pond. There's a bass swimming around the pond with a white residue on it's eyes! It's totally weird and I don't know what caused it. This fish doesn't look healthy and probably hasn't been eating since it simply can't see well enough to catch the fast moving minnows and baitfish in the pond. I try to net the fish so that we can get a better look at t...
Dead Bass at the Backyard Pond! Time for an Investigation
มุมมอง 8806 หลายเดือนก่อน
We have a dead bass at the backyard bass pond. I need to find out what happened to this largemouth bass. Winter kill? Lack of oxygen under the ice? Starting the pond aerator too early? Too late? Did the fish eat something bad? Too much late winter pond aeration, or not enough oxygen? Did I have the diffuser too low at the pond bottom? Could that be what killed this fish? In order to get to the ...

Backyard Bass Pond - Stocking Minnows and Adding Structure

Backyard Bass Pond - Stocking Minnows and Adding Structure
That is not enough aeration. You added like 6 ft of linear surface area to the pond with those bubbles and your pond is like a half acre or more. I would install two giant bubblers on both sides of the pond. So much bubbles that you get some nice rippling at the shore. Also, plant a lot more plants that you can cut and use as mulch around the yard. Something that takes up the nutrients, then when you cut it down for mulch, you remove that nutrients from the pond system. Also, your yard drains towards to pond. Anything uphill should run into the wetlands before hitting the main water body.
It seems like you're trying to hard to make the pond viable. I dug retention ponds that are teaming with life . I dug it and nature took over
It started out like that here as well.
Dude this is what I do to feed the bass I have inside I just grab net and get food from creek on farm. Trying to grow one fast inside cuz we have that NY winter but keep going bro this is awesome
Thanks, I've been loading up minnows in the pond this past summer.
Can that winter pile combust? 🔥
No, it's only hot when it has lots of moisture, so it won't light on fire.
you need to let your bags of minnows lay in the pond to equalize the temp exactly to prevent shock. After 30 mins or so, release them. Less shock.
I try to get them acclimated as best I can but I find my bigger issue is lack of oxygen in the bag. I find I lose more minnows from oxygen loss rather than temp change, so I try to get them into the pond fairly quickly.
I'm thinking to grow one too. I'm also planning to eat it when it's done. Is it tasty?
Not sure what they would taste like. I've never eaten one.
Do you have a link to the aerator kit you purchased?
Yes, I bought the 2 pump system from here:www.thedugoutdude.ca/
Nice looking bass!
Hi. To Be clear, the pond completely iced over right? No degassing holes, no aeration for a duration? The largest fish have the highest oxygen demand, first to go. I would guess your largemouth died and you found it floating later as bacteria and such started taking action and the fish went from the bottom to the top. As your fish respirate the take oxygen and add CO2 into The water column. A sealed system Traps the gasses and allows very little exchange and no new Oxygen. The biological process takes oxygen(aerobic bacteria must have it to break down waste), the bacteria in the pond, the algae, the fish and insects all take it from the water column. CO2 and other gasses will build in the water column and your PH may decline if the GH/KH of you pond is minimal(opposition to acids). The entire biological process, fish and animal life create waste, ammonia , CO2 etc. and converts ultimately to hydrogen sulfide, methane, nitrogen and other non life loving things. The oxygen pump You were using was shut off. The bacteria this supported would begin to start dying off to a smaller number which in turn reduces the carrying capacity of your system. When it gets cold the entire system slows down but does not stop, suddenly stopping the air support and not degassing will stress your system. If you leave a hole on the end of the pond and continue to aerate this would allow degassing and offer additional O2 to the system which would have likely given you the balance you need. A few notes: the bubbles you see on the bottom(not O2) are generally from anaerobic bacteria giving off gasses such as hydrogen sulfide methane etc.. These bacteria live in lower oxygen zones and break down nitrates and release gasses. The minnows with white patches are showing clear system stress and this fungal/ bacterial symptom is their immune system being challenged. I think the whole problem is rather simple, the more oxygen in the upper water column the better, the more vapor exchange(degassing) the better. This process supports more beneficial organisms and reduces stress on a system. Hope this gibberish helps.
That's a lot of great info, thanks for the detailed explanation.
I've never seen such a good video about compost. Incredible. Please make more compost videos
I grew my 1st giant pumpkin this year(2K24) at the base of my compost heap. It was doing really well till some critters got to the plant and fruit. I’ll reset and try next year but inside a fence
If you can see a white disc that is deeper than 18" below the surface, you need more dye to prevent algae.
super video
Are you related to Elon Musk?
You’re trying real hard Ringo!
Not sure how much you learned about how to really get clarity and healthy water over the course of your journey here, but quite a few misconceptions as well as what you leanred all on your own. Been ponding now for 13 years and with much more density than you've got, have never had greenwater since inception and am definitely overstocked. The key here is sun, runoff (organics/fert getting in) and no plants. The keys for you would be to find shade (water lilies can shade and help with the nitrogen cycle, albeit modestly at best if NOT allowed to roam free which would be my suggestion), add lots more plants, and create a berm around the pond so you don't get any further rain runoff. I came for the solar aerator and what you have, imo, is woefully inadequate. For the price, I expected more and better, despite you did a good job explaining what you have and how it all worked out. Kudos for that. For a pond that size, you'd need much more aeration for any real oxygen saturation (continuous). Natural ponds work on massive surface to air agitation and the wind is the main source of that, which you'd have also. A waterfall would add so very much more than this aerator. Problem will be getting power to it and I'm not a huge fan (so far, including this vid) of solar. You'd need a much larger array and backup batteries, which only increases the cost of solar. Too, adding oxygen is NOT going to get rid of your algae issues; whoever told you this isn't understanding the chemistry and dynamics of a pond. Aeration is good, but moreso for the fish and beneficial bacteria. Any underwater plant is going to give O2 during the day but oxygen is taken in, at night. Chems you can add (algicides) take oxygen OUT of the water during it's process and next to a heron, is one of the best sources for fish loss horror stories. I don't ever recommend. Natural is the way to go. So, add shade, add lots of plants, make that berm, don't overstock, don't overfeed, keep the bottom clean (which will be problematic with a large pond as the fall is going to continuously put leaves etc into your pond; any sort of windbreak/shield could help but with time, this organic layer is going to build on you and the decay process won't keep up, thereby increasing the mulm layer every year until dredging will be necessary, which is expensive. Your aerator system is never going to solve water clarity here nor will it substantially increase O2 saturation, even if running 24/7. You found it could get iced over whereas my own smaller unit could keep a hole open, albeit it's using electric mains for power. And all ponds have algal blooms initially; it's what you do from there that will determine if it stays a problem. Out competing the single cell free floating algae is the key and to do so, you need plants---lots of them. I appreciate the time you took to examine the solar aeration system and hope this info above can actually get you closer to your goal. The many 'voices' out there suggesting dyes and chems, even aeration, are all coming from a standpoint of trying to sell you something, which I am not. If curious, visit my channel and watch/see the vids of a much smaller pond (7K) that has a much higher stocking density than yours, and see if all my advice above is effective. Good luck!
Wow thankyou for your words you have given me as a reader of your comment good info much appreciated for your comment

Frog.... it's no longer your crayfish. RIP
First year for me growing a giant pumpkin. August 22 , 2024 my pumpkin weight estimate from measuring is 135 LBS> I still think I have another solid 20 days of growth So im hoping to hit 300 LBS. Not bad for a first timer. My seeds were 1625 GAnsert. Parents 1382 rea 2019 x 1501 Vanderweilen 2017. From Don Langevins 2023 Orange collection seeds.
That's a great weight for the first time. You'll learn something every year and improve. I read all of Don's books as a kid when I started growing. Norm Gansert has grown for years and usually likes to grow very orange pumpkins, so the chances are you'll have a nice orange one too, which is always a bonus. I'm growing one again this year in a pile of last year's leaves. I'll be uploading it at the end of the seaso on my other landscape channel, though. Ryan Hoelke Landscape.
Hi I totally understand your frustrration. I have been battling algae bllooms every year for 25 years now. Finally this year we had great results. Believe me we have researched and tried everything. I have a windmill pump for airation. We have used blue pond die in the past, to filter the U.V. rays from the sun and it has helped in past years and looks nice, but still had algae. This year I put black pond die in and it was like a miracle. (Algae died off in a few weeks) Looks natural too and is non toxic to fish or animals. Maybe give that a try Cheers
Hey, thanks. I saw the black dye online but thought it was maybe too dark, but I'll give it a try.
That long pumpkin looks like an Algonquin Pumpkin!
do you have link to order this thanks
I got mine here: www.thedugoutdude.ca/
Another Great video. The pond looks awesome!
I’ll guess a male who already fanned a bed and is recovering. Nice fish though.
That's kind of what I was thinking, thanks.
That really cool
Dumb idea maybe.... if space permits... What about cutting a small shallow wandering creek that opens into another mini pond... Into that wooded area? I'm sure the roots would be a pain to work around... The thought is for increased safe haven for breeding fish, increased wildlife, maybe more crayfish and things... Just a thought...
I was just looking at that area. I should have really made the pond larger that way. Maybe some day....
Ponds are fun! What about lily pads? Maybe you'll get frogs? Ahh... as I cont'd yes you have frogs. Wonderful.
I absolutely need more plants, you're right. Planning to do some planting soon.
So fun. My brother-in-law and I built one on his new land. There was a large nursery who owned a huge plot of land that backed to his yard and had a huge hidden pond in the forest with tons of monster bass in there. It was totally hidden. We knew cuz we snuck in... 😁. There was a stream that ran from that pond onto his property. It was just a small swampy puddle. He paid an excavator to dig it out. It was fantastic. Suddenly "lol" it was fully stocked with those monster bass. He also added blue gill, cat fish and 2 large grass eating carp that could not reproduce. Fun property.
Looking forward to more pond and landscaping. Hopefully you can make another pumpkin video thanks for sharing.
Thanks Dan. I have all of the landscape and Pumpkin videos going up on this channel now. th-cam.com/channels/SZQ7X3UP3J8uNa89KMcd3g.html I'm trying to keep the pond videos on their own.
Cool video. Don't forget to add water plants that will help oxygenate your pond.
Working on that next, thanks.
Nice update. My 6 year old sat on my lap and was very interested throughout. In a way I'm glad it's only "April" as I hope it means more updates throughout the year. Speaking of treating it like an aquarium, there are very small water insects that specialise in eating algae, like Daphnia. Aquarists will grow Daphnia ponds in their backyard to feed their fish and keeping algae levels high enough is the struggle. I wonder what would happen if you grew a large culture of them and dumped them in the pond.
I'll do some reading on that. And yes, there's more coming. Filmed a lot just have been short on editing time.
Glad to see you posting im invested 😂
Ha, I'm a little late but have a bunch recorded to put together. I've been spending a lot of time working on the landscape channel around the pond this summer, but I have a bunch of pond filming done and ready to edit.
Nice video
Great video. Showing the solar eclipse was a nice creative choice.
Thanks, we didn't get as dark here as I was hoping, but still pretty cool.
I’m battling weeds more than algae. Not sure what type but the pond was really low last year and d that is when the plants grabbed the chance to thrive. Will aerating help?
I don't think aeration would ever hurt. I would try a package or two of pond dye. I have a video on that stuff. It works well by cutting the sunlight going deep in the pond which weeds need to grow. Block the sunlight, block the weeds.
We have a one acre pond. Added 5 tons of gypsum. Pond is now crystal clear
I've never heard of that. I'll have to look into it.

I would advise you to learn more about water hardness called GH and KH, and to measure your water hardness levels and the PH with a drop test, not the strips. Because your pond shows all the signs of water hardness problems. Snow and ice is soft water, it lacks minerals. And that can cause that your water hardness levels are becoming too low, and when your water hardness levels are too low it can create a PH crash in a single night, it means that your water becomes too acidic in a single night, and fish will get sick or even die. GH is general hardness and it should be between 8 and 12. KH is bicarbonate hardness and ideally it should be 8. But do not just add GH and KH plus before you learned about it. Because if you do it wrong it can make matters worse. When the PH is too low it will also cause algae growth. Because algae do not care too much about PH. Other plants won't grow because with the wrong PH most beneficial plants are not able to take up the nutrients in the water. First raise the GH with one point per 3 days until it is 12. This will also raise the KH a bit. After the GH is at level measure both but then do nothing for at least two weeks. Only after those two weeks measure the KH again and if the KH is still below 8 after adding the GH then add KH plus, but not more as one point per 3 days, and follow the instructions from the product that you buy exactly. And never ever add GH and KH plus at the same time, or within two weeks from each other. Once both levels are good, wait for 2 weeks and then you can add Mearl for the long term GH balance because that works slower but longer. And two weeks after that you can put cleaned sea shells in your filter for the KH balance, it does nothing until the PH drops below 7. When the PH drops below 7 it means that there are a lot of hydrogen ions in the water, and those are acidic. The sea shells will only dissolve as a result of the acid in the water and release bicarbonate which will neutralize the acid until the PH is neutral or at 7 again. Measure the GH and KH every month, especially when you have a lot of snow and ice. And remove as much mud and muck as possible. When you clean a pond filter always use pond water to clean the filter. Leave some dirt inside the filter. And try to save as much of the water as possible so that you can throw it back in the pond without the dirt. Again, learn about the importance of GH and KH !!! And how to adres it. Follow the instructions from the products that you buy exactly!!! It will solve the algae issue and the dying fish issue !!! Only aerate during the hours that it is dark !!! It is very unlikely that you have an oxygen issue because you live in a cold climate and cold water has much more oxygen. A waterfall would probably produce plenty enough oxygen for you pond. The most likely culprit for your issues is water hardness. Do not aerate too much because it will cause the KH to drop too low !!! Again, learn about water hardness. And keep in mind that you learn from people who live in the northern hemisphere who experience rain and/or a lot of snow. People in dry areas do not have these issues, or at least not at the same magnitude. If you did the tests, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. If I can I will answer your questions. 👍
P.S. Your water hardness can also be too high !!

It does. I take the gamble and shut mine off in the winter so that we can skate on the pond safely.
The pond is reflecting the green of the trees. Water has no color, but the clarity impacts its reflectivity.
