- Growing an Atlantic Giant Pumpkin in a huge pile of Leaf Compost. It's time to test out this homemade compost and see what kind of growing power and nutrients are in this pile consisting of a million composted leaves. We made the leaf mold compost out of thousands of yard waste bags of leaves and mixed it all with coffee grounds over the past few years. The coffee grounds add nitrogen to the carbon rich leaves to achieve the key 30:1 carbon to nitrogen ratio for making and breaking down compost.
Once the compost piles are flipped and mixed one last time, we move the giant 25 yard pile into the center of the growing area so that out pumpkin plant can receive maximum sunlight for maximum growing. The giant pumpkin seeds are started indoors under grow lights and heat mats before the last frost date. After the last frost date the plants are moved outside to get hardened off for planting time.
The compost pile is raked and ready for this seasons giant pumpkin plant. Will will continue to film this series for the summer and into the fall in order to see how big and heavy we can grow this giant pumpkin. Come along for the ups and downs of giant pumpkin growing.
