Did my Pond Aerator Kill All of my Fish?

  • The pond aerator has been running for over two months now and the water is still green algae colored. I haven't seen any fish in a while and I'm worried that the solar powered pond aeration has killed all of my fish. When using a pond aerator system, the water gets mixed from bottom to top and with that upwards water movement, dangerous gasses that are caused by fish waste and organic matter collecting and slowly breaking down of the ponds bottom, can be mixed with the oxygen rich water and cause harm to the pond fish. Ammonia is the lethal threat to fish. If concentrated amounts of Ammonia get pushed from the pond bottom back through the water column, the gas can harm the fish and cause massive fish kills. Has this green algae filled water proven to be toxic and killed my fish? I grab a fishing rod and fish hard desperately trying to find some fish before winter freeze-up. I had hundreds of fish before the aeration system was turned on and I'm hoping they are all still alive and healthy.

Wondering if the aerator increased the nitrogen growth too much?

A year later, I think it was all the runoff and erosion going into the pond that was clouding my water. I stopped the water from pouring in, and the pond was very nice and clear this year. You can see it in my pond aerator 2 video. I learned the hard way about what heavy rains pouring into the pond can do.

I've put LMB in my pond and somehow they've all died off

How long did the largemouth last? I'm planning on putting in a couple this summer.

@Ryan Hoelke the first time they were adult LMB and they last about a year and I think I didn't have enough forage fish and food for them to eat so I believe they were to weak died off.The 2nd time I put in a mix of sunfish & juvenile LMB but then my windmill aerator fell over in the early winter and my pond froze over and I belive they may have suffocated so the windmill is good and anchored and there's an abundance of forage food like minnows, bullfrog tadpoles, frogs and sunfish in the pond so im going to try putting in 8 juvenile LMB this year.
There must be an abundance of food for this species because they DO LIKE TO EAT LOL!!!

I thought the aerator prevented surface freeze?

It does. I take the gamble and shut mine off in the winter so that we can skate on the pond safely.
