Great video! You pond is very healthy - the fish are nice and low which means good dissolved Oxygen content at all levels. How deep is the pond? Were the fish at the lowest point?
Thanks for this. Good to hear the water health looks good. I tried to dig it deep but it's pure sand based so once the water cleared after digging, the pond was only about 7 feet deep as the sand sides slid into the center. Maybe 8' in a couple spots not totally sure. The sunfish seem to stack up in the middle of the water column at times but I do see more activity in the winter down low on the pond, as I'm assuming it's warmer there than just under the ice.
@@ryanhoelke thats interesting, usually the water turns over and the warmer water goes to the top and keeps the ice from going down low - but i suspect the temp might just be consistent from top to bottom eventually. In any event that's a healthy ecosystem you have there. If you want to see how healthy get the biggest speckled trout you can find - something that wont fit in the mouth of your bass and watch it in the winter, it'll stay where there is the most dissolved Oxygen. I have a dissolved oxygen test kit I use in my pond and its very helpful and just pretty good info to have and understand how your pond is performing....it'll also tell you if you are headed for a winter kill.
That sounds cool. I've never heard of the dissolved oxygen kits and it sounds interesting. I have wondered about maybe putting some speckles in late in the fall. Thanks.
@@ryanhoelke if you do youll have to put very big ones in or the bass will make a quick meal of them. rainbows you can usually buy big ones - to big for the bass and they do better than the specks in low DO (dissolved oxygen) environments. With specks you'd most likely have to aerate all winter as well.
