WHAT THEY GOT WRONG. DO's and DONT's of Hero Mechanics
The recent release of Delta Force has confirmed my concerns about the inclusion of hero character mechanics into the extraction space. At least in this case it was done IMO poorly. I try and make my case in the video.

Spot on as usual. Completely agree that a big part of the extraction space is everyone starts from the same point, and it is your decisions of what to risk that determine your edge or lack thereof in combat. It will weaken both the extraction mechanics and the hero mechanics, as people will largely only go for meta picks with little variation.
Doesnt mean it cant be done well. But I feel DF had some missteps on it. ty for watching
Please note I am not calling DF a "Hero Shooter" just because it uses hero mechanics. But Rainbow 6 Siege is a hero shooter. Change my mind.
I really am annoyed by people calling Arena: breakout pay2win. Ability to gain advantage by paing real money is so miniscule and senseless, but people still complain because it's free to play and is owned by tencent
I seen many leaked footage already, It's a little dry again...
At this point I find more enjoyment reviewing my own gameplay videos than playing other games. AR needs to hurry up and come out. Ty for watching
Congrats.... You found a topic I don't have a strong opinion one way or another. Only thing I can say is having a market let's the devs control it more. TCF had a player market. People would organize the trades on discord/forums and party up and extract. And prices were all over because there was no price comparison. And lots of scams as a result.
Ty for watching. True. Players can always organize their own barter system. But the majority of a game's player base doesn't interact with the game's reddit, discord, social media, etc. Much less go out of their way to barter. TCF also created high demand by requiring ridiculously hard items to find for progress. Even for the players that do interact with the game outside of it, it has no impact on everyone else's experience.
@thegeck0frontier but it does have an impact... You're right, majority of players don't interact outside of the game in the external communities. That's typically your power users that do. They get much further ahead and create a bigger gap between what would be casual vs "sweats" and that gap carries advantage. In a game like TCF that claimed at one point to be trying to be casual friendly it is felt but the casual doesn't understand why. And this isn't to mention that it leads to bigger adoption of RMT. I remember being able to buy the big gold sniper rifle for like $12 at one point. But like you said, a lot could have been because of hard to come by items being required for progression and that's where it started. Weapons might have just came later. If they keep it out of progression maybe it'll be lower.
Yeah, I think the demand for RMT is increased by an economy that seems daunting. At that point, players will look for shortcuts.
I remember your vids from the cycle; top tier quality and insightful takes. All we need is one team of developers who think like you do and we'll have the game we're looking for. When it happens itll pop off in popularity and I have the feeling that your channel will do the same. Good luck out there!
You are too kind. Ty for watching
@thegeck0frontier forgot to add any input about the loot and market situation; there are reasons that certain games have become timeless staples in gaming, despite their controversies. Runescape is a classic example of a player-driven market and was popular enough to warrant RMT trading. All else withheld, runescape's market gives value to everything, and for every item you can buy on the grand exchange, somebody is farming it to sell to you. Destiny and Destiny 2 were the more prominent FPS games to nail the loot addiction model with random rolls and unique and personal weapons. My "godroll" might be very different than yours, and we'll both keep playing the game chasing different variants of the same item. Both of these games lack something important in game structure, especially concerning the extraction shooter we're chasing in our dreams (aside from neither being an extraction shooter obviously). Runescape is top-down and lacks the mechanical component of fps games; there's no mechanical skill diversity and this is why it's so easy to build effective pvp bots for example. Destiny lacks a persistent world and has no market because items can't be traded. Imagine if Destiny allowed you to trade for weapons and armor; player engagement would change dramatically. We need something that draws from both (and more) examples and ties them together in an extraction space. Tarkov is close but lacks the charm and lore that the cycle had, and heavily restricts it's player market. The cycle just lacked a bit of combat and gear complexity and the devs were concerned with other issues at the time.
Honest men are always appreciated
You're appreciated. Ty for watching.
Im not a fan of Level Zero.
I think it had potential, the the gameplay is just meh and as noob trying to play it, I find it too hard to compete with seasoned players. I also hate the alien, it isnt needed other than as an AI for pvpve. Id much rather just fight other squads and pve aliens
Me either. This was from the open beta and they've made several changes since then. IMO, the changes have all been in the wrong direction and the player count for the game shows it. Was fun while it lasted. Ty for watching
i like surprise, i can be in any map any mode and check the simplest of bags, or boxes and find a rare item and it gets the blood pumping!

Thanks, i ran out of Arc Raiders content and the withdrawals are kicking in
The withdrawals are real lol. Ty for watching
When you see a game has looting in it, what are you hoping to see? What's your best case scenario when it comes to how a game handles this part of the game?
I hope to see developers ingenuity and technology advancing! Not the "we reviewed these 8 other games that are our direct competition and we PIRATE their mechanics in our game". With the amount of computational powers and the super fast internet we have these days, all those *already* invented idea's needs to come out the dusty storage. There are many game mechanics that were not possible in the last decade, games tried it but horribly / partly fail on the concept. Games as "Mavericks: Proving Grounds" and "Worlds Adrift" to name a couple.
@@N0N0111 IDK, games often dont need to reinvent the wheel. They just need to put together tried things in the right combination to make a dominant game. Example: Halo.
Came back to the video from a link in Arc Raiders subreddit. What about durability without a repair system? On a long enough timeline all gear would leave and need replaced. You can tweak this depending what direction you want to go (does low end or high end last longer or is it all the same for example).
Durability as a mechanic I think is a given moving forward. It sucks up resources and adds costs to using items that naturally curves it's appearance in games. It still holds the same problem as lets say hiking up costs directly: only the people struggling will effected. But at least it offers the ability to attain said items. It just calls into question on your ability to maintain it. Having no means of repair magnifies the problem for players outside the top I think. It devalues the full item in 2 ways: knowing that it has limited uses players who have a harder time will opt to spend resources on them much less run them. On the other end this really wont curve the usage for those top players. It also makes looting said items off other player players less enjoyable. Though if the objective is strictly to reduce gear inflation it could work to push it in the right direction (even if I am skeptical about it doing that in the long term). I would just be concerned about its other effects.
@thegeck0frontier better question, is this something that is solvable with extraction games as is? Overall I still hold to my point that extraction should be a loop, not the whole game.
@@PyroTech03 It might not be to be in its current form. Hunt has grown over the years with no wipes but its gear fear is minimal at best. The solution might very well be something like survival games have where you have individual servers that reset at their own pace. Could you elaborate on what you mean by "loop"?
@@thegeck0frontier it's like I said essentially in a comment below here. But extraction gameplay should in my opinion probably be part of a larger game. Imagine a PvP mmo for instance where your guild can hold territory but one of the resources to maintain a shield or some harvester is something you have to drop down on or venture into a special region and find that resource.... Then extract with it and other loot. You go back to your guild base and use what you found in other parts of the game. Whether that's guild wars, dungeons, territory conquest/control.... Or a current working example at its most basic would be the Division and it's Dark Zone. Everything you get there feeds into the broader game. You don't have the gear loss aspect here but you could call The Division as the start of extraction games. Just someone thought it'd be better if you took the darkzone and made it into it's own game.
I mean I agree so much with this idea I typed up an overly complicated version of it. Posted it on the Arc Raiders reddit. Project: Warlords. I truely believe clans would fit the idea of a "larger" game and if done right solves the issues wipes are a band-aid for. So I we're on the same page on this one
Arc can probably fill the gap of Cycle, but imo, that's a different crowd than the Tarkov crowd because the thing that grabbed just about every Tarkov player that still plays Tarkov today was the jaw-dropping depth and detail of weapon customization of REAL WORLD weapons. Weapons and gear in Tarkov are all real-world items and extraction shooters that are in a fantasy land don't appeal to much of the Tarkov base because fantasy weapons aren't relatable to someone who has interest in firearms. In Tarkov, as soon as someone who prefers a realistic environment sees the weapon building right down to needing the threaded adapter necessary to put a suppressor on their AK... they are hooked and will tolerate everything they then come to hate about Tarkov because of it. Look how long the Tarkov community as bitched at Nikita for certain changes that he has ignored for years... and yet they still play. It's because owning and using all of those real word weapons that to many are unattainable in RL IS their fantasyland.
TY for watching. In my time play TCF I saw countless EFT players come in and give feedback on how to make it more like EFT even though they hate it (make it make sense). So I kinda disagree on the pull. Sure there will be people who want the milsim portion. But I venture to say that a big enough chunk want the Extract shooter part and can part ways with the milsim portion. In the end I dont think it matters because I think way more people are willing to approach extraction shooters if they arent as off putting as EFT.
@thegeck0frontier Do you have a Discord community perchance? Curious about the types of games your community is getting into while waiting for some of these extraction shooters. Forgot to mention in my last post that this was a great vid. I really like your analysis.

The play test they did was very small, just a couple hundreds had access. They did not do a proper server stress yet, this game will easily get 50K players in the open access. Time will learn if the devs have enough courage to bring that test soon or over 1 year because of sudden major changes that they are not new to.
Yeah, I don't think stress testing was the goal. This is a vet crew, so I'm sure that's going to be monitored. I hope we get our hands on it sooner rather than later. Ty for watching
They are already running THE FINALS which servers are very demanding, due to all the destruction and physics happening there. They have around 15k concurrent players on Steam only, so probably closer to 40-50k if not more. I don't think they will have any issue with server loads.
I played some games in the closed test, definitely loved the vibe of the game, the environmental and atmosphere is just amazing! If they tweak the gunplay a liittle bit, it would be just perfect. Let's hope for the best, raiders.
How did the movement feel, was there a rush sprint animations like in very first pve trailer?
@amu5621 honestly the movement felt quite smooth and responsive, and yes there is a sprint animation.

Good times.
I've found it very curious that all news of Arc Raiders has disappeared. They had such a strong intro trailer, then poof, nothing. I heard it got delayed? I don't even know when it's supposed to come out at this point. I'm not a huge fan of extraction shooters, but from what I saw of it, it looked super interesting. As to the age of the average gamer... well I'm pretty careful where I wear my pre-order shirt for Warcraft 3. The shirt alone is older than most of the people around me in some places, heh. But the age range of players will vary depending on what you play. I'd say the average is closer to 30 in my ESO guild than not, where if you are looking at something like extraction shooters, yeah, it's going to probably be closer to 20.
Ty for watching. Embark is pretty heavy-handed with NDAs, so there's not a lot of info rolling around. They definitely have a history of under promising and over delivering. Release is set for early next year. Yeah, I think you're on the age thing. The genre might have a lot to do with it.
I just wish it was first person. From what I am told by people who know, Eve Vanguard is more like The Cycle then Arc Raiders is. 1. First Person 2. Persistent Servers 3. Sci-Fi Setting
Ty for watching. I'd disagree, but EV is way earlier in development, so features could be missing. IMO Of all the gameplay design decisions and issues a game could have, being 3pov is really insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
This game was not a stupid extraction shooter it use to be a PvE game
With respect, It didn't use to be anything. We got 1 trailer years ago and a genre change shortly after years ago. It's seems awfully bitter for a game that was never shown (trailers don't count) and never played years later.
Great video, good luck with your content creation journey my dude. 💯
Tyvm. I appreciate it.
was hyped ... until they went pvp now have no interest. i think the shot themselves in the foot going pvp only
TY for watching. I think it's the other way around. Given the people involved they clearly are skilled in making PvP games and likely have a preference.
Battle Royals, from a strategic point of view, in the context of those selling games, is the perfect mode to capture the average mass gamer. The reason is dopamine. And we market it to get easy money. We place you in a random party with people who have spent more money than you, to make you feel like you need to buy skins. We put in easy goals where you feel like you are making progress giving you a sense of accomplishment. (Unranked) We put you against other players where you think you are better than, in order to make you feel superior. Everything in this industry is made to separate you from your time, money, and friends. And that, is the dark side to brand strat. Our goal is to make you feel like the company is on your side so you entrust it blindly. We do this on a psychological level before you even see an ad or trailer. The only companies that are pro-gamers, are those who produce content that once bought and downloaded cannot be turned off. (Basically DRM Free, Non-Live Service Games) Even then, they are still looking to be profitable.
Gaming is a business unfortunately and what you said can be said about just about any genre (some more than others). As gamers, we got to be more savvy these days. Unfortunately the majority haven't quite caught up to where they need to in order to vote their with wallets in order to discourage companies from repeatedly doing shady stuff. Ty for watching.
If the cycle frontier relaunch again then will you play it or not ? Also tell me did you like that game or not ?
Ty for watching. Take a look at the first half of my videos and I think you'll get a very clear answer. IF Yager was at the helm, I might not jump on right away as it was clear they had no idea how to manage an ES. As it stands RN, I'd play AR over TCF simply because it's gameplay is more in line with my preferences. But I'd likely play both TBH.
Just face it, Extraction shooters without PvP are just looter shooters. Cheaters don't care if they have to buy a game or account 10 times over. A buy-to-play model only temporarily deters the broke cheaters. Arc raiders will fail as an extraction shooter, if only for its 3rd person camera. Good luck with the inevitably unfair exit or objective ambushes. 3p camera is better suited for casual PvE games. Its a niche genre that is build on high risk, low reward. If you forego that, it will fail pretty quickly. The wider audiences are already tired of the extraction shooter genre. Inherently it is too hardcore to ever be mainstream. IMO Hunt still does it best. It punishes you for your missteps, but gives you a second chance if you or your teammates play it right, which makes it feel brutal yet fair. Anyone complaining about the scifi context just doesn't get that its not really about that. Its about strategy, being aware, overcoming dire situations, playing the cards that you got dealt and suffering the consequences of your actions. And the seemingly slow-ish gunplay is also critical to its success. Fuck the EFT clones and every casual iteration that it spawned.
It might seem odd but other than Arc Raiders and Marathon I am most interested in the Dune MMO given its focus on PvP encounters. I feel like the tension you could experience in the deep desert with storms rolling in, worms inbound and tense PvP may be an extraction shooter ‘lite’ that has a similar feel to The Cycle/Cycle: Frontier. Additionally having base building MMO elements may help with more meaningful progression as well. Also think Cycle devs are assisting Funcom on the game which is doubly exciting. Final point of mine being that MMO’s also, generally speaking, have an easier barrier to entry. Though still curious about how they are going to do loot balancing and prevent OP players from dominating the play space.
That game is also on my radar. My only concern is that it seems to have more of a survival element than an extract. In that, the base and such could be at risk when you're not online. Not of fan of that kind of thing, but not a lot of info, so I'm keeping tabs and keeping an open mind. Ty for watching

Ty for watching. You also need to play less to have that residual satisfaction.
Concord has set the mark, that the game industry needs to stop with their flashy crunky hero shooters.
Arc Raiders has the chance to do what The Cycle failed at...make extraction gameplay accessible. I've got friends that hate PvP that liked Arc. They were making progress. The only thing that might keep them out is it no longer being F2P as it can be hard to justify paying for a game in a genre you're not thrilled for.
100% that paid option has its upside but it will take time to convince people who are on the fence if at all. Ty for watching
If not Arc Raiders, what other game are you looking forward to the most? Why?
definetly Marathon, i just wish any of those games will release soon. I want a good sci fi extraction shooter. I hate mil sims

Do you have to sign up for the beta test to play this?
@uvsproperty4906 yes. It's over for now though
Ah, a fellow Cycle Frontier mourner. I've been searching for something with a similar feel, unable to find one - Hunt Showdown has beautiful visuals and some good pvpve but dying in 1 bullet to the head is just too fast, and there's little to do in terms of stash/economy management besides 'have enough money'. Starsiege deadzone had potential but fizzled out. Ascendant isn't really an extraction, it's more of a capture the flag with respawns and little risk. Delta force playtest had some good aspects but got too deep into fancy weapon attachments and 'sim' elements like bandaging individual limbs and dying in 2-3 AR shots made it unfun for me. I have some interest in Arc Raiders but third person isn't really my thing, the entire subgenre is really hinging on Marathon if I'm being honest. What's done is done, but trying other games has really made me appreciate how wonderfully designed the maps, mobs, and objectives in TCF were - stuff like the meteor shower, hitting the mouth weakspot on the jeffs, seeing the orange bar fill up once you got the right items for a new quest or upgrade, finding rare ores and spinning around to look for players...I might never get that kind of satisfaction in an extraction game again. Here's hoping Bungie can cook and save the niche.
Ty for watching. I know how you feel. TCF was my first ES, and it's the one that showed me how much I enjoy the genre. Personally, I played it mostly for its potential as I stopped playing it the moment the shutdown was announced. It's a shame that 3POV is a sticking point. Exoborne and Arc Raiders are probably going to be the closest thing to TCF. IMO, AR takes the best parts of the cycle and sheds the rest. I can not express how much I love it (cause of NDA, lol). Marathon going with Heroes and all of the staffing issues bungie is having makes we question if we'll ever get the game tbh.
@@thegeck0frontier The marathon hero rumor was debunked iirc, I will give AR a fair try when it comes out regardless of camera status
That's good to hear. It would be a shame to have a game fit well save for one thing.
Cool idea for a game. Love the fact that you can make your own trampler. Being 100% PvP is not my thing though. I hope there is some sort of matchmaking or as usual noobs will get decimated by the guy who spent the last 10 hours just looting and extracting to source stuff to build his mega trampler that you have zero chance of defeating.
They stated this trial was just to test PvP but have way more planned in the PvE side of it. And I do believe there are lobby brackets. Cause you're right on it's importance. The new player experience will make or break games. Ty for Watching

@@grph1t3z I believe he was making a comparison from the 1st to the 2nd game. One was way more hardcore and punishing and the other more arcadey. Txt isn't the best format to articulate nuanced points and not everyone is the best at it either. Benefit of the doubt and all.
Great video mate
Thank you for watching and the kind words
game is in first person and doesnt look good at all ! but idea of the game is Awesome
We rarely get a perfect game as individuals. It's still very early, and I'll see where it goes. Ty for watching
Great review, sharp to the point and covers everything you need to know! Great job.
Glad it was helpful! The game does run significantly smoother since the hotfix today. I knew it would get fixed, which is why I wanted to focus on other things.
This video is exactly what I wanted to see on this game. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. Ty for watching.
Bugs and performance are horrible, but in my experience are easier to fix than altering gameplay design. If they fixed all the bugs and performance issues would you still buy it? Why?
One huge thing they need to change is the reactor control. Needing to hold to turn it on but only tap to turn it off is terrible. My duo chased an enemy duo for almost 30mins after they stole a box from our mech while we weren't on it. While chasing them, one guy would constantly jump off his mech, board us and "jump" no clip style straight for our reactor to 1 press shut it off. He'd then let himself be killed only to respond on his mech what seemed to be an infinite number of times. (Over 30 at that point) we ultimately just called off the chase because no progress was made on either team after 30+ mins. Smart tactic by the enemy but the difference in turning on or off should be change to hold for both. Also the ability to no clip mount or jump up things really needs fixing. Being able to walk up to any wall or structure and jumping and it allowing you to climb it with unlimited jumps is game breaking. Hope they learn from their demo. Massive potential and fond memories from an old Guns of Icarus player.
I think the real issue is the questionable clipping and mantling. In reality I like the current way of reactor shut off as it gives a boarder something to effect the trampler that isn't just go for the cap.
