How To Cycle Test and Match LiFePO4 Cells
In search for the perfect pack! In this video I show you how to cycle test cells as well as batch and match them to build a matched pack. I found that LiFePO4 cells will degrade at a rate of about .5% per year just sitting on a shelf, not in use. Its important to perform a maintenance charge of your cells if you are going to store them for any length of time over 6 months.
I also found when purchasing cells that are unmatched from over-seas distributors that they can have a deviation of 4 amp-hours. This is the difference in capacity between the lowest and highest capacity cell.

    Download and pair the app that goes with that mini split. It's WAAAAAAY more useful using the app than just the remote. ..... REMEMBER, in order to get the mini split to recognize that you're want to pair it with your wifi, you'll need to hit the "light" button on your remote control 8 times in a row..... Research it for yourself. The app makes that AC WAAAAAAY better! AND you can control it anywhere in the world OR see how it's doing. TOTAL RECOMEND!!! I have a different manufacture of the same mini split unit (they are all made in china probably from the same plant) called "Airspool" It uses the same app as the LG4 unit. Both great AC units. I get mine from San Tan Solar. They are located in the Phoenix metro area, NO sales tax and NO shipping because I'm picking it up there.

    It's not entirely obvious to me what values to put in the app - I have no idea what the Pukert variable is, for example. Where can I find the values to put into the app?

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sorry about that. I did not explain that value much because it's not relevant for lifepo4 cells. Here is an explanation I found. The Peukert’s Exponent is used for the lead-acid batteries. Simply said this exponent is the ratio between the charging and discharging of a battery. It means how much energy you need to charge compared to the energy you get when discharging. For the LiFePO4 cells, the efficiency of the charge and discharge rate is very high - above 97% and more. That is why the Peukert’s Exponent is close to 1.00. The battery producers do not give this value because it is not necessary for the LiFePO4 cells.

    Knowing the price for those kind of DC to DC converters, you can find an adjustable buck-boost converter with low voltage protection/MPPT for around a similar price. I currently use a ZK SJ20 Buck-Boost module, which could take any input from 7-80 VDC to output 1.4-79 VDC; 20 amps, 300W max. Will I face a current spike like im seing in your video? what would you recomend to accomplish this battery exchange safely?

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, there would, but the faster you switch it, the better it would be. It also depends on the switching device used. Some could work in a way where both batteries would never connect... like an A/B switch, but I would not advise doing this.. Either way you do it, you would need some heavy-duty fast switching device... why not just connect the batteries in parallel from the beginning...? Why do you need to swap?

Those converters do not care how many amps you give them as long as the input voltage is within the desighned range ! they will alway take the amps they need. Question: Preface: I’m new to solar, just installed 2 100w panels on my roof, dc to dc converter just came in today from Amazon. Same as yours 20 to 90v 16a XWST Buck converter. My panels are wired in parallel and I’m getting an output reading of 48 to 50v on my multimeter in full sun. My question is can I plug in a 12v 400w ac inverter to the buck converter to run low wattage ac appliances directly from the buck converter?

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, you could. If you see the project page on my website, a viewer did this. Just FYI, you will only be able to supply that inverter with the same amount of output watts of the buck. I think it's around 200w for that unit. So, connecting anything more than 200w would be wasted. You would only be able to get 180W (including conversion losses) of AC output... lmk how it goes.

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Your panels would have to be in series, not parallel, in order to produce 50v assuming each panel is 24v. 2x 24v panels in parallel would produce the same voltage as a single panel, but the amps would be doubled. Series affect volts. Parallel affects amps.

    Hello, i recently bought two identical panels. One is outputting 17v under low sun, the second one only 6 volts. (no load attached). When testing under full sun they output both 24v. Does that means that the low outputting voltage one is damaged?

    • @natesdiysolar

      It could be if you tested them under the same conditions. Do a short circuit test on each panel individually see how many amps are produced. Compare that number with the ISC value on the sticker .

      370w x 6, but you only need 1500w total to run it 100% . It will run on less it just won't be as effective. When on solar, the max draw was 800w, even though my panels could supply 1500w at that time.

    Very easy install, no HVAC tools needed. Can run directly off of solar, no grid! Per the specs, this unit can cool up to 650 square feet and requires 1100W of solar to operate at max power. But it will run on as little as 200W (untested), it just won't run as effective. A 1500W PV array should be perfect. A single string PV array is recommended at a max of 380V DC. Do not parallel the PV array due to the realativly low ISC of 12A. So when cooling, it was running only at 3amps. Does that mean that it was using about 3amps per hour? So if I have a 40amp battery, i can run it 13 hours?

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @romanb78 you can not look at the amps. You have to look at the watts. This unit uses a max of 1500w per the specs. So 1 hour would take 1.5kwh of battery capacity. If you have a 200ah battery and it's a 12v battery. 200*12 is 2.4kwh, so you could run the unit for 1.6 hours.. but that's a worst case senerio. The unit will not run constantly.. it cycles like any other AC. So, in short, AC units, in general, are power hogs with 600w being the lowest on the least cool setting and 1200w at max.. have a look at the specs and manual. Hope this helps.

Whatever the output of the converter is in terms of watts is what you can hook up to it solar panel wise. You would need a larger converter. They do have solar water pumps that take solar input directly, but you should be able to run a small 12v pump from that converter.

      Hi. So I have been working on a 12-Volt basic system video but have been sidetracked by other stuff. I have the system built and its on my website. This should work well with your plans. www.natesdiysolar.com/projects/12-volt-off-grid-solar-system/ If you think its to big then you can just get a smaller inverter and a smaller battery but use the same charge controller. LiTime has the mini series and any small pure sign wave inverter will do. I like Renogy for small 12-Volt systems. If you want to go cheaper still, just add a small 200w mini pure sign wave inverter to the SHTF project. If you do go with a battery, I would go with LiFePO4. one viewer did this but not sure what inverter he used, it was a 200w pure sign though. www.natesdiysolar.com/projects/shtf-emergency-solar-power/viewer-builds/thomas-k/

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar หลายเดือนก่อน

      Typically you want to keep the Amps as low as possible by increasing the voltage as much as possible.. 15% under 150v max so 135v max.. when you cross that 30a threshold you must use 8awg pv wire.. its more expensive than say 10awg.. unless you have a short run... also when you go higher amps you must fuse each parallel string... that charge controller at 12v is suites well with 200 to 250w panels. Panels of this wattage will have a imp value less than 10a.. so you could easily have 3 parallel strings if you decide to go to a 24v or 48v system.. the more amps the more fire prone things can be as you are dealing with higher current. But if I had to choose from your 2 options. I'd go with #2. But in either case you need 8awg pv wire. 10awg pv wire is good for 30a. Hope this helps.

      @@natesdiysolar You helping a lot , Thank you. If you put the systems in series, in this case is option 1 is better? More volts or amps do not influence the better/faster battery charging? Sorry for my bad english.

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Alexandree55 yes that would be a perfect setup. It does not affect the charging either way. The job of the charge controller to to convert that higher pv voltage to a charge voltage your battery likes. Watts are watts no mater how it's wired you will still have the same watts. Watts equals total volts times amps. If the voc of your panels are 24v then 6x panels in series would be 144v voc. That is just under the 150v voc limit.

      It won't damage the inverter if you don't. It's just a common practice that people do. Newer rack mount style batteries have pre charge circuits built in but not all batteries have this.
