Can A 50W Solar Panel Charge A Dead Car Battery?

  • In this video we charge automotive (lead-acid) batteries with several different solar charging solutions. We use a 5-Watt MPPT Solar Battery Maintainer as well as a DIY solution using a DC-to-DC (BUCK) converter. We will also use a waterproof (mount anywhere) - 10 Amp MPPT Charge Controller designed for vehicles made by LensunSolar.
I do a lot of off-roading and I do not want to get stuck out in the desert with a dead battery. The idea is that I would be able to charge my vehicle battery in under 2 hours using a roof-mounted 50-watt solar panel. Be on the lookout for a future video where I mount this system on an off-road vehicle!
So, I would not recommend using a buck converter as a permanent battery charger as it is not intended to replace a battery charger. I wanted to show the versatility of a buck converter and how it could be used as an emergency solution. However, I did find some buck converters by XWST that do output constant current as this is what you want in battery charging, but the voltage input ranges were not ideal for solar. I have provided a link to the PDF of all their units. An MPPT charge controller is simply better at the job.
    Enjoy!

I found this really cool and easy to use mini MPPT charge controller. it's waterproof and is very durable, light and compact, and has Bluetooth! All that for only $79! It only accepts up to 130W of solar input and outputs 10A, but it's perfect for keeping your vehicles battery topped off or emergency battery charging.
    Enjoy!

Add a blocking diode between the bucking converter and battery. This prevents the battery from backfeeding and possibly damaging the buck converter.

Buck converters seem to be a pretty handy device to have around the house. I found this voltage adjustable buck converter on Amazon “DZS Elec DC-DC Buck Boost Converter” that might meet your needs.
Nate, on a slightly different path, have you had any experience with ZNShine brand solar panels?

Would be nice to see buck converter, and behind it PWM charge controller, it would be very close to mppt efficiency if buck converter will be little big higher than battery voltage.

@@natesdiysolar Yes, if voltage of panel and voltage of battery are far away each other, pwm suck, buck converter theoretically should improve efficiency of pwm controller. MPPT controller is basically buck converter, pwm controller, and IC unit with algorithm to achieve the most power.

Would there be any benefit to adding a power capacitor (1 farad) to a dc to dc converter configuration and/or lipo4 100ah setup?

    • @natesdiysolar
      @natesdiysolar  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Don't think its the buck converter or panel is an issue charging the ATV battery. If its already below 11.5 volts and sat like that for any time the battery died and wont take a charge anymore. After charging a battery wait 5-10 minutes then check the resting voltage, dead batteries can show a surface charge with normal voltage but putting a load on it shows the capacity. For an emergency though it could save you, like to see the experiments getting the brain thinking on possible projects!

wxst came with a 1,5ah and 12(9 to 14v) and convert it to 13.8v constant...!!! was my smartest buy!!!! even if a batt is less , it kills it to fix the another battery !!! 30w panel goes to cheap pwm

Aww man that would of been a good idea to try. I should of bought a cheap pwm and compared efficiency of all three devices. Would be sad if a buck is better than a pwm lol

What is the highest watts in 12v panel I can buy to charger my 12v car battery very quick ?
    Note : price don't matter .

    • @natesdiysolar

It will depend on the controller you use and how much space you have on your car roof if you plan on mounting on car. Remember there will be wind drag etc.. but using the controller I used it will take 100w panel @ 8 amps I'm guessing it would take 30 to 45 min to get enough charge to start.. hope that helps

Sure, but it's the highest I have seen. But you should know there is not really a such thing as a 12v panel. They are actually 24v but used in 12v systems. You can technically use any size panel as long as you have room. Take a look at santan Solar. A 250w panel will produce around 37 volts. 335w will product 45v or so. Sure, they have tiny 12v specialty panels but have very limited use
