  • This is an update video to the original "How to Test Solar Panels - For Beginners!" video. A few viewers pointed out some things that were inaccurate. I think everyone could benefit from the information. Also, I continue where we left off before "my meter broke" and show the parallel testing.
    Enjoy!

Solar panel can output significantly higher current than the spec short circuit rating. Also you can easy get 20 to 30% higher output power than panel rating in a cold sunny day especially when there is snow on the ground or edge of cloud effect.
The rating on panels are for Standard Test Conditions where panels are illuminated with 1000W/m^2 and panels are at +25C. For that to happen in real world ambient will need to be way below freezing.

I always wondered why the fuse rating on the panel was so much higher than the short circuit rating..

@@natesdiysolar Yes you need a 15 or 20A fuse for those sort of panels.

Nate, I live in the Vegas area too and recently I’m getting about 80 watts from my hot 100 watt solar panel while charging my Bluetti solar generator, so you are getting pretty decent result’s comparatively speaking. I have gotten over 100 watts during cool weather.
Oh, in your video you indicate “natesdivsolar” instead of natesdiysolar as your web site.

Thanks for noticing that. Yea, panels get very hot up to 140 degrees out here. I'm guessing. What side of town are you on..

Can they make white cells? Would they be more efficient and cool

I'm not sure if they can. Blue or black is ideal as you actually want to absorb as much light as possible, but yes to what degree.. does heat outweigh efficiency.

Hey Nate, thank you for sharing this. Wondering if any prototype services may help for any upcoming projects? Such as custom PCBs, 3D printing, CNC machining etc. Would love to sponsor freely and reach any YT collab together if there's a chance! (PCBWay zoey)

That's a great idea! Do you have solar products too?

@ebikecnx7239 Compared with the solar products already on the market, your original design are also welcomed and we'd like to support it becoming a reality! Such as those projects shared at our open source community and store. Any interest to talk further? If you don't mind, my contact info is available under this account.☺
