A retrogaming channel mainly dealing with videogames based on TV shows, movies, musicians, food and other weird and wonderful licenses.
I’ve already covered every game on the ZX Spectrum related to a TV Show, and have now branched out to other formats: Amstrad CPC, C64, Amiga, PC, Playstation, Gameboy Color, NES, SNES, Megadrive, MSX, BBC Electron, Master System and Gameboy Advance.
Have also done Games Of The Year videos dating from 1985-2009 (with a couple of book end videos covering before and after); there’s a series based on movies that flopped hard in the cinema, yet still conceived a game; musicians who had a game based on their likeness; and then a series covering all the other licensed games, be they food, celebrities, movies that you wouldn’t think had a game, toys or books.
Plus this is the home of the Genital Facts Arcade Challenge videos, where I take on a gang of Facebook numpties at a selected game, lose but also teach you about the mating habits of human and animals!

The game show is a nice, cheap to produce way for a TV channel to entertain the masses. Stripped of the prizes and the genial 80's game show host and their charismatic ability to bond with Joe Public, it is pretty difficult for the games to have similar appeal. I covered all of them inbetween 2018 and 2022 (...at least I think I did), and it was certainly more misses than hits, however there is...

Loving these, and your humour!!
Thank you. I think being childish works well!
The skill set for interstellar travel very different to that for playschool level jigsaws
The probably isn’t a lot of crossover no.
Some great games on that list. Think ive probably still got some of them
Hopefully not Postman Pat 3…
@jaethemanchild Don't think I even got the first two Postman Pats
The Gilbert game i thought was pretty ok ish
Yeah, it’s fine! It’s nice and big at least.
A few speccy games i never knew about …brilliant 2nd parter
Happy to edumacate!
"Through the trapdoor" came out in 1997? Are you sure?
Now, you’d think I could have gone back and corrected that. Especially in its second incarnation. Whoops!
And how could you not like Blue Peter? That lady with the short skirt i cant remember name of, and.. er.. wel.. that's it really.. Is it still going?
I *think* it is. My son has never watched it though. If a children’s magazine show has never been seen, can it really exist?
@@jaethemanchild : That lady who used to wear the short skirts definitely got seen by me... Quick google, Katy Hill... And now im not going to get work done for 30 minutes.
It's still going, and still has attractive presenters
@@VermithraxPejorative : It's not the same thing when it's not your first "time" though is it?
When the wind blows - we were forced to watch this at school.. I think I was about 9 or 10.. all i remember is it gave me f-ing nightmares way into my 20s.
It’s definitely not a sequel to the Snowman, that’s for sure!
I was a student and we were all watching Playbus one morning following a come down off er.. things you come down from.. And there was a song on it called "lets ride on rosie, everyone knows rosie likes to ride". Which got us into a fit of hysterics. Pretty much only one of a handful of things i can actually remember about being a student due to the aforementioned things we were coming down from)
Goodness me. That would certainly trigger my hilarity gland if I’d have been in your studenty comedown shoes!
"Some suspension issues" indeed 😂
MARION Cobretti, and yes the film is shit
Thank you, I’m keeping my record of one mistake per video going. Always good to be consistent!
It's not my favourite Christmas film, but it's far far better than A Christmas Story or Fatman, and that's even with my general dislike of Will Ferrell. Not a film I would have bought a game of though
Is Fatman new? I’ve no heard of it.
@@jaethemanchild It came out in 2020. A kid hires a contract killer to kill Santa. Mel Gibsons Santa is working for the US government, and it's just a mess
Great video. Bomb Jack a great game imo
Bombjack could easily have made the list in retrospect. The spectrum one is a great conversion
I am going to take your challenge and see if this really is the worst gba game (it's absolutely got to be in the bottom 5 it's utter bobbins like a bad ngage game)
I know you’ve got some absolute filth up your sleeve!
A lot of people aren't aware that there is an animated version of Elf. I bought it on DVD at around the same time as I bought the film on DVD. I've only watched them once, but I'm tempted to watch them again this Christmas because the film version has been talked about a lot in recent weeks. I'm wondering if a video game developer has made a game of "Elf on the Shelf" because it has become massively popular over the last decade, same with Christmas Gonks.
I think there might have been a mobile phone Elf on The Shelf. I vaguely remember seeing it on iOS. I had no idea about the animation though. That may well fall into my rotation when my son and I have our Christmas moviethon
@@jaethemanchild I didn't know it existed until I saw it for sale in HMV around eight years ago. It was made for TV in 2014 and is entitled "Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas". I'm quite looking forward to watching the new episode of Wallace and Gromit on Christmas Day because it's been almost 20 years since The Curse Of The Were Rabbit was released. Most people assumed that was the end of it, but I had a feeling it would return again one day. The W&G games on the Xbox were pretty decent.
I'm not surprised it's a bad game because most movie tie-ins are. I have to say, the Gameboy Advance did have good graphics for a handheld console. The first game I bought for it was the Sega Arcade Gallery, which included Outrun and it was arcade perfect.
I love the GBA. Definitely my favourite handheld. Some of my favourite games are on it like Ninja Cop, Metroid Zero Mission and Astroboy… but boy did it get some stinkers too! Imagine in 1986 that 15-20 years later you’d have an arcade perfect Outrun in your pocket.
@@jaethemanchild I was thinking exactly the same thing because the first Outrun conversion I owned was on the Sega Master System, which wasn't bad, but not even close to being arcade perfect. The PC Engine version, which I owned three years later, looked a lot like the arcade version, but wasn't quite as playable. When I bought the GBA version, I couldn't believe how accurate it was, same with all the other Sega games on that cartridge. The good thing is, the cartridge is compatible with the DS, so I can still play it.
Xmas when one is e.g me chiz ect a grumpy old git is uterly wet and weedy. What makes it worse is when you have Hell's Rotarians outside the most proximate "super"-market belting out all the (explicatory deleted) that they do. Yeah, and there'll be a crap sledge and another crap excuse for the coca-cola Santa. Thank you for what you do sir - I have been watching this channel for quite some time (I think when that Krull video was posted was when I subscribed). I don't bother watching "Xmas" movies at this time of the year - the only reason it is so depressing is because of the false joviality and the sudden xplosion of ads on youtube involving helping donkeys and all that stuff chiz chiz chiz ect. The only real solution is to get gently sozzled.
Stuart, you’re not alone in your festive shruggery. Somewhere on my channel there is a video of me playing Pipemania and absolutely miserin’ about it. As you say, a cracking time to get sozzled, so here is to you sir!
How could you put TLL and not Cyclone? But Minder is one of my favourite Spectrum games!
You maybe right regards Cyclone, it’s arguably the better game because the helicopter is lot more responsive. Minder has no right to be as good as it is.
The NES version of Elite is one of the best
I remember it got really good reviews, didn’t it?
@@jaethemanchild very good for playing on a little retro handheld.
I can here to moan about lack of Roland Rat - but then i saw the A to P part.. im a plum!
Roland is combing his fur and straightening his little hat as we speak
No Poland pat though!
@ he’s in the second half too. There are a LOT of P’s!
If you've not been to a cricket orgy you've never lived.
Hopefully this is easier than Pengo :D
It is not!
@jaethemanchild dammit!
Good to see you had fun playing with your balls (fnar, fnar)
When I saw the artwork for the arcade version, I was convinced I owned it for the ZX Spectrum, but the game itself didn't look at all familiar, so chances are I never played it. The developers definitely could've done better.
It was a bit disappointing when I got it, so you didn’t miss out.
The movie offered something new at the time and I'm a fan of it (have it on DVD). I don't think I knew there was a video game version. The graphics look quite good considering it's 20 years old. I didn't realise it was as old as that. Time flies.
I know right?! 20 years ago. I’m sure the 80s were 20 years ago!
One of my sister's favourite Christmas films of all time. And I'm almost certain she owned this game in the early 2000s.
Jim Carrey does do a great job in it. Your sister got herself a great little game there
This has got to be the most brutal Tetris-likes I've ever seen!
It’s tricky, though I suspect if you’ve got the right type of brain you maybe able to get a bit farther.
A game similar to this is available in the 2024 Jacquie Lawson digital advent calendar. The balls are Christmas characters and you have to match pairs of characters to make a large Santa. I've played it a few times, but haven't yet managed to make a Santa. Some of the games in the calendar are highly challenging, same with last year's.
Those digital advent calendars with games on are quite a neat idea. I like that the games are hard though, as it’s not Christmas unless someone is cussing up a storm.
@@jaethemanchild Yes, they are definitely worth checking out because they include more than just games. I've been receiving the Jacquie Lawson Advent calendar as a present for the last four years. The first one I received was set in London. The following year, it was set in Sussex and last year it was based on 1930s England. This year, it's is set in Paris and includes games not featured in the previous calendars and exclusive recordings of Christmas carols sung by the Notre Dame Choir. You could quite easily spend all day exploring its features, especially in mid-December, by which time most of its features are unlocked.
Wiered recommendation for me lol I'm not British, Don't know half of these shows and have almost no knowledge of the ZX Spectrum
The algorithm moves in very odd ways sometimes.
Just started watching and fully expect ball jokes, lots of ‘em!
Needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed 😂
It’s basically a tap in!
This game is bloody hard!
It’s brutal, like the life of a penguin
Great selection, I’ve written down about 20 from that list for my The Soectrum Xmas present One for you in return: I think you’d like the Sacred Armour of Antiriad , had it in a compilation set, one of the few games I completed
The Sacred Armour Of Antirad eh? I’ve just looked at a few screenshots. Big chunky sprites! That could be right up my street. Thank you!
Subbed!
Thank you, I shall do my best to keep you entertained… but I do have a lot of off weeks too.
@@jaethemanchild Just keep doing what you are doing!
Excellent video. I enjoyed that!
Thank you!
I hate chimps....they are psychopaths
Some good games in there. I'd forgotten just how many games you'd reviewed so far
HUNDREDS
The 1991-1997 series could have made an excellent video game, conplete with the Milan Kymlicka soundtrack! Conversing with, confronting and fleeing dragons, boss fighting the Giant Pickle in Podgy's nightmare, chasing the corrupt elf on the Elven Railway system, using God like powers of chalk drawing in Chalkland, reverting a giant rampaging magic hedgehog to pre magic status 😆 Spyro the Dragon came out only the year after the animated Rupert series finished.
Actually, that does sound like it could be very interesting. I would be down for a 3D Rupert platformer/adventure
Awesome - you saved my evening! Thanks for the hard work!
Glad to help! Hope you enjoy.
I really enjoyed your British TV show/video game reviews. I love to hear about 80s British culture as I grew up on Benny Hill. I also used to watch a ton of Card Sharks. I figured the US version was ripped off from the British version as a lot of American TV was like that in the 70s and 80s. But it sounds like the opposite was true.
Thank you! I think that we’re pretty even stevens with the cultural exchanges. Most British quiz shows either come from the States or Europe.
@@jaethemanchild True. I didn't watch trivia shows so you are right. I was a Price is Right kinda guy which may make me a mini-game enjoyer. lol
I watched this on DVD about three Christmases ago. I was highly impressed with the CGI and the voice acting. If you visit Broadstairs in Kent, you can see the famous door knocker on the front of Charles Dickens' cottage along the seafront. It was even featured in Disney's cartoon version of A Christmas Carol (aka "Mickey's Christmas Carol"), which I remember seeing on TV in the early 1980s. I didn't know a video game was made to accompany the 2009 film, so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Oh wow! I didn’t know the knocker was real. Thanks for that factoid. The movie is fine, it’s pretty close to the original story.
@@jaethemanchild I've visited Broadstairs lots of times since the 1970s, but it was when I was at college in the early 1990s, I went there for the day, on the last day of term, and one of my friends pointed out the famous door knocker and told me it inspired the haunted door knocker in A Christmas Carol. I remembered it from Disney's 1983 version, in which the haunted door knocker turns into Goofy's face. I think that was the first Christmas Carol film I ever saw on TV. I remember my sister being involved in a stage production of it at our primary school, so that was probably the first version I saw of it. I've got at least four versions of it in my DVD collection, including the two Disney versions. I haven't watched any in about three years, so I might dig one out to watch over Christmas.
@@jaethemanchild Patrick Stewart who appeared in the late 1990s TV version (one of the best versions IMO) saw the ghost of John Baldwin Buckstone (a friend of Charles Dickens) while performing in "Waiting for Godot" at the Theatre Royal in Haymarket. I found out three years ago that John Baldwin Buckstone is buried in my local cemetery (Ladywell & Brockley Cemetery). I had a ghostly experience myself at Welling train station in August 2016. It happened in broad daylight and I believe it was the ghost of Hilary Evans because, unbeknownst to me at the time, he looked just like him and I've since found photos of him wearing the same clothes and carrying the same bag. I believe it was a warning from the other side, something Hilary Evans talked about in his books on ghosts and in a documentary about ghosts on The Discovery Channel. Also, something paranormal was captured on camera in my family home in 1985 and it's covering my face in the photo, which was supposed to show me playing on my ZX Spectrum. In 2017, the photo was added to Hilary Evans' paranormal photo collection in the Mary Evans Picture Library in Blackheath Village. I didn't really believe in ghosts until that photo was taken, so I've had a long interest in the subject.
I'm so grinchy I made the grinch cry.
Did you pull out his green ballbag hairs? You’ve been warned about that, David.
No one admits to watching Blue Peter? Dude.. I spent my late teens and early 20's thrashing myself to a standstill whilst ogling Janet Ellis on that show twice a week. What a woman!
I stand corrected, while you look at Janet, standing erected!
Great to see that the original Sonic movie design was used for a game at least.
That Sonic movie design still makes me chuckle whenever it pops into my head. Just like now! Thanks for the giggle.
"Uhh...meow"
I don't like this game but hooo boy I like the ps1 grinch
The PlayStation version did have fantastic presentation. It’s not for me, but I can see why it has its fans!
I'm the Grinch
You aren’t. You haven’t got a dog
Well two reviewers both wrong with the game being 5/10 probably. Next week's one is going to be fun 🤣
