Tonight we look at Monsters & Treasure, the second bookley in the original D&D woodgrain-boxed set from 1974. The very first "monster manual" - you might be surprised just how much of what we still see in modern D&D products goes all the way back to the very beginning.

Who is The Old Dragoon? Let The Games Begin!
An excellent, comprehensive exploration of the E in BECMI. Second to none, thanks.
Man I missed the boat back in the 80’s lol. Just a bit too young.
@@keithfta789 It's all still out there, on the secondary market. Why not play the old games in the same way nightclubs have an 80s night?
Picked this up recently off of ebay. Remember staring at the ads for it in the back of comic books and always wondering what it was. The show and rpgs in general were something that passed me by until muuuch later. Dig the video!
When you showed the combat table, I looked at the ranged combat below and it immedeately made click with me, and then shortly after you mentioned that this (indirectly) evolved into the Romeaster combat system and that made me happy^^ Doesnt take much nowadays^^
Glad that I found this! Thanks for the deep dive.
It never got as much support Trinity or Aberrant, and I haven't looked at the new stuff, but there was Adventure!
This game was so ahead of it's time. First RPG I ever bought. I'm on my 4th Boxed Set now. Wife and I moved into her parent's house and had no idea my brother in law, who passed away 5 years ago, was a gamer. Found a beat-up copy in the attic this year. Even found some of his old characters in the box. Made me both nostalgic and sad at the same time. Would have loved to have played with him. Shame that the revised rules done by Bill Logan had to be removed from the web after the LaNasa/TSR fiasco. They were well done. I did some work with him on the Star Frontiersman fanzines. If you haven't seen Bill's Frontier Space, I would suggest checking it out. It's an excellent successor to Star Frontiers, though my heart will always be most fond of the original. Looking forward to seeing your overview on Knight Hawks.
I have looked briefly at Frontier Space, maybe I'll take a deeper look now that you suggest it. So many games (and clones!) and so little time to actually play.
I've heard that for 1st release of Marvel, wanting people to play the established characters was a decision of Marvel, not TSR. Wonder if that also happened here?
A very interesting question. I wonder if anyone who frequents North Texas RPG Con can tell me next June? Either way, I think this game was hampered by a lack of character gen rules in the boxed set in the same way Star Frontiers was hampered by the lack of spaceship rules.
Never played, but I would go with Sallah every time.
Played some Marvel in the mid 90s. Don't remember exactly but it probably was the Revised. We would alternate between that and Heroes Unlimited. Later in college moved on to Aberrant.
I have no knowledge of or familiarity with this franchise (Robotech, not Palladium) except the movie Macross Plus, which I've probably watched a few hundred times.
Power attack combat, I immediately thought of Belgarath and Ctuchik. Or Rand and Rahvin.
Ah, level drain... One of my 2e characters made to level 9... three times.
@@IbnShisha1 I've never seen a player frightened on behalf of their character as solidly as when level draining Undead show up.
7th term scout rolls 12 on last year of enlistment..... dies.... NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@@s3xedmanthunder192 I hate when that happens. For me, it's usually trying to get a Merchant or Pirate to ship rank/age.
1E core rulebook read as a technical manual. 2E has been refreshingly more like a traditional game book. We had a demo game with the quickstart guide 4 weeks ago, and last weekend we had our first character creation session. Ending with a training dogfight between the players ship and another federation ship to introduce some ship to ship combat. Excited to play more 2E games!
Did you find starship combat more intuitive in 2e than what was written in the 1e book?
This is a great introduction. I had a similar experience as a kid in the 80s. I love Traveller so much that I have been running a play by email campaign/s since 2002. I hope you will do more content regarding Traveller.
That's the plan. But there's SO MUCH content across so many game lines I love. I'll keep doing Traveller - just not sure when. Of course, comments like this one help me mentally prioritize.
Its so over convoluted its rad.
I think that's a valid point. Full details on circles, wards, power words, who knows what about what, different kinds of caster, different kinds of priest, even specific kinds of knight/warrior... There's so much here, you have tons of hooks to hang a narrative on, and details with which to immerse your players.
@TheOldDragoon while I am an avid ad-d 1e fan I really do appreciate Palladium and Rifts in particular. It is OD&d Gonzo taken to the extreme.
Love the new look, and sound was great....thank you for all the hard work.
Thanks!
BECMI was so good. It was before my time (I learned on Dragon Strike, and the 1991 reprint of Basic before moving to AD&D 2nd revised). As an adult, I went back and read BECMI- that was the best introduction to D&D. I have no idea why they didn’t keep that as the standard way to learn.
I wholeheartedly agree. While I did appreciate the "Dragon Cards" included in the 1991 Black Box, they proved a bit fiddly. I think the BECMI Red Box was the sweet spot.
Ferengi are finally a core player race?! Now i have to buy it.
Well, the 45th Rule of Acquisition says "Expand or Die." Modiphius has expanded the starting player race list.
Hello! Can you provide an example of how Starship Conflict damage works for PCs & a GM? The NPC starship examples have me confused.
I'll see what I can do. Starship Combat was always the part I had issues with in First Edition, as well.
@@TheOldDragoon I really appreciate it. I gave myself a headache after trying for like two hours of reading and re-reading. The NPC starship damage ratings just make no sense to me. For example, the Cardassian Galor, I think, is a seven. But when you reference the Starship Weapons table, that ship’s damage for that weapon should be a five- if I’m understanding everything right. Which leads me to believe that Department numbers are involved. But Department numbers aren’t involved with PCs? (As you see, confused.) Seriously, any help is appreciated.
This weird because I am exited but a little disappointed with companion rules I feel cheated because the art is copied from red box 1011 my favourite set and period of Dungeons and dragons ever I remember my Dad wouldn't by this for me years later someone gave it to me and it was stolen a few months later I have never played this set but it's iconic I am looking all over facebook for players in London it's getting annoying I am already bored playing 2024 rules, the companion set is still a great read though I cannot wait to get my Masters rules set!
I own them and i bought these sets recently it's almost impossible to find people who are still playing becmi, i am annoyed!
Freaking amazing videos @TheOldDragoon! I really love how you go over all the basic info for each book you cover. I never got into Palladium Fantasy growing up, I was more into Robotech and GURPS. Now I know a lot more about Palladium Fantasy and Marvel Super Heroes and all the games I didn't get a chance to try growing up. RPGs from the 80s rock! It would be so freaking awesome if you made a video about Shadowrun 1st Edition, and some GURPS vids would be awesome too (3e, of course!) My new favorite channel, keep up the awesome work!
@@RobotechRPGForever Wow, high praise! And those are all titles I plan to visit.
@@TheOldDragoon Amazing!
I fell HARD for the Palladium Gaming System almost immediately after paging through the Rifts Sourcebook (this is Dec '92) and finding out from my little brother that they had a rule set for their fantasy setting (this very video is about the 2nd Palladium book I ever paged through). Turns out that the same system is (roughly or completely) compatible with TMNT, Ninja's & Superspies, Beyond the Supernatural, Hero's Unlimited, etc. Holy Cow! The fact that Rifts made it possible to merge ALL of these into an environment heavy with inter-dimensional incursions was just icing on the cake.
My friend, I encourage you to track down a copy of the Wayfarers RPG. I’d buy the single-volume version on the secondary market. I think you’d like it.
Is this Wayfarers from Ye Olde Gaming Company?
@@TheOldDragoon Yep!
I ran a few sessions, and I would gladly run it again.
As would I. So many games, so little time.
This game is so fast. The rules are easy to master, so you can concentrate on keeping the adventure going at a good clip. No taking 15 minutes looking up a rule. Marcus' stats are in The Fourth Nail (ST 36, MO 48, PR 60, BA 64, IN 92, AP 64; KNO Archaeology, First Aid, Surveying; LAN English, German, French, Spanish, Romany).
I like Raiders Marcus better, also.
Have you checked out Wight-Box by The Basic Expert? It is PWYW I believe. It is the 3 original books, using the alternative combat system, with parts of Chainmail added in. There is weapon vs. armor modifiers, etc.
@@michaelwallace6851 And I'm off to the Interwebz.
IF you notice the BECMI sets they have the same guy on the cover progressing from basic fighter to immortal
This was a very well done walk-through.
Thanks! I do try.
My favorite version of OD&D is White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game. It's incredibly easy to homebrew for and it encourages modifying the rules. I've been experimenting with some Frankensteined and altered rules from other systems to see what'd feel right to run for a campaign. I'd probably use a separate system inspired by one of my favorite video games for inventory management though for simplicity's sake.
Perfect timing for me, I was looking at a clone of these books. Was thinking of looking for them on drivetheurpg. Thank you for another great video and all the hard work you put into it.
The discussion of Armor around 32:15 reminds me of the Rolemaster Arms Law tables versus various armor types. Good times.
Absolutely. I love Rolemaster, though these days it's pretty crunchy for some folks. Check out Against the Darkmaster, it's a lot like the old MERP version of Rolemaster, streamlined but retaining a lot of that RM flavor.
@@TheOldDragoon I've recently discovered Rolemaster Unified. Only need Core Law and Spell Law. Treasure Law and Monster Law haven't been printed yet. I'm most likely going to get RMU. Even Basic Roleplaying is "too crunchy" or complex. But, uhh, I don't' want to get into how some people learn and retain because everyone is different. I make flow charts or cheat sheets for any game I'm playing, even OSE or Into the Odd. Helps keep the brain bucket empty until needed.
@@PhilipDudley3 Cheat sheets are a great way to go. I've made quite a few myself- especially for Shadowrun 1st Edition, which I run at conventions. I'll take a look at RMU when I get a chance.
@@TheOldDragoon if you weren't a fan or played it in the past, you're correct though. It would be hard for a modern gamer to get into it.
Didn't know about the Outdoor Survival game. Great Video. Thank you!
Glad to be informative! And thanks for watching!
Pretty sure you're looking 9 years too far back for Melf's Acid Arrow. It was in AD&D Unearthed Arcana.
Good catch. But I was honestly surprised the old go-to, Magic Missile, was absent here. With so many editions of D&D in my head, sometimes the spell lists aren't entirely clear as to when things came in.
@@TheOldDragoon Tim Kask talked Gygax into adding magic missle. Kask argued that magic-users needed a boost at the time.
@@jasonjacobson1157 Thanks! I'd not heard that.
Good timing, just printed off the 3 little brown books and chainmail. Starting into my own deep dive
Wicked! It's a lot of fun to read. I may run it for some folks soon- using Chainmail's 2d6 table - and see what they think.
@@TheOldDragoon Thanks for suggesting the we were wizards podcast .Spent most of the afternoon binge listening. I find it very interesting learning how it was in the early days.
@@lonnytucker1345 It's pretty damn great.
I wonder if you could do a 1-36 where you erase the G4XP thing, and give a level per session or two per session and just try it out. You'd almost want to work to plan out PC progression up through that level just to make the rate of leveling not be super taxing on Players building PCs. I know for me when I level fast, it's hard to keep up with the new abilities.
That could be quite interesting.
Mentzers advice is not to over-use dice. You're kind of not meant to always roll the dice every time the thief tries to do something, meaning that you don't need to worry too much about many of those % totals looking a bit low.
Sound was great!! Never played chainmail but thinking I’ll try it solo style… Great video…watched it three times so far and enjoyed it every time

Sorry. Corrected in later videos.
I was always interested in looking into Star Frontiers, but had my hands full with other games and pass times. Thanks for the video.
It's worth taking a look at, especially if you enjoy other games of that vintage. It's a very 80s game design, right down to the physical presentation of the box and books. We've had a lot of fun with it over the years.
I love Palladium. It has a method of keeping players on their toes with exciting moments coming from the opposed roll combat system. Feels very dynamic and alive.
I also love the opposed combat rolls. It may make combat take longer, but it gives the players the feel that their characters can actually DO something to protect themselves. The inclusion of automatic parry for trained characters really shows the difference between someone with and without combat training.
Audio was solid. I've never played Chainmail, but back in the 20th century the grognards I played with mostly played Napoleonics or Modern Micro Armor (or Harpoon/Flethcher Pratt). Have played some Battlesystem; wondering how it compares.
@@Robovski I played Harpoon, and some of GDW's Soldier's Companion.
I have this game. It's not great, but it's not as bad as people like to say it is. Where did that come from?!
Hey! Dr. Rotwang! I used to eagerly read your posts on RPG.NET. I believe the reputation got exaggerated with the creation of the "Diana Jones" award, using a pulped copy of this game's cover inside the award itself. The system is no worse, really, than any of the other chart-based games, but the lack of character gen really hurt the game. Worse, I believe, than the lack of starship rules hurt Star Frontiers.
