I've heard that for 1st release of Marvel, wanting people to play the established characters was a decision of Marvel, not TSR. Wonder if that also happened here?
A very interesting question. I wonder if anyone who frequents North Texas RPG Con can tell me next June? Either way, I think this game was hampered by a lack of character gen rules in the boxed set in the same way Star Frontiers was hampered by the lack of spaceship rules.
I always thought Zebs Guide for star Frontiers was the first TSR game with Zeb's preferred system. Looks like made this the test platform and then pushed it thru the rest of the TSR products, except for D&D, be interesting how D&D would have looked if Zeb Cook was able to use it on it.
As I recall, I was in my late teens when I picked this up. My friends and I maybe played this a handful of times before switching back to 2nd edition D&D. I don't think it was bad per say, just not compelling enough to buy more adventures.
I'm not sure if it helped or hurt that two of the adventures released were Raiders and Temple- after all, Victory Games did that quite a bit for their James Bond 007 RPG. But Combine that with the limitation of only playing the characters offered- it could seem like a one-trick pony.
This game is so fast. The rules are easy to master, so you can concentrate on keeping the adventure going at a good clip. No taking 15 minutes looking up a rule. Marcus' stats are in The Fourth Nail (ST 36, MO 48, PR 60, BA 64, IN 92, AP 64; KNO Archaeology, First Aid, Surveying; LAN English, German, French, Spanish, Romany).
Hey! Dr. Rotwang! I used to eagerly read your posts on RPG.NET. I believe the reputation got exaggerated with the creation of the "Diana Jones" award, using a pulped copy of this game's cover inside the award itself. The system is no worse, really, than any of the other chart-based games, but the lack of character gen really hurt the game. Worse, I believe, than the lack of starship rules hurt Star Frontiers.
Great video, would love to check it out. Thank you for all the work…
I love deep-diving games for the channel. Thanks for watching!

I'm guessing it would have looked a bit like Zeb Cook's Conan RPG. Google ZEFRS, It's a retro clone of that game, and freely available.

Man I missed the boat back in the 80’s lol. Just a bit too young.
@@keithfta789 It's all still out there, on the secondary market.
Why not play the old games in the same way nightclubs have an 80s night?
Never played, but I would go with Sallah every time.

I like Raiders Marcus better, also.
I have this game. It's not great, but it's not as bad as people like to say it is. Where did that come from?!
