I'm a journalist with a love for photography, videography, and animation.
On this channel, we take a look at digital cameras both old and new, digital devices, tutorials, and much more related to the art of visual storytelling.
Above all, I want to show the world that gear isn't nearly as important as fundamentals. Like I always say, it's the composer, not the instrument.
Thanks for viewing, and stay awhile :)

The Canon RP does not SUCK
I wanted to get out with this budget friendly full frame mirrorless! Some of yall might have this waiting under your xmas tree, bought it for a crazy black Friday or Prime day deal, or already have the camera but you're super GAS-ey lol. Either way, it's a workhorse.
As stated, I bought mine used just shy of 500 dollars with a ton of extras! It'll serve predominantly as my "real estate" system, but it will cover all of my photo needs as well.
Furthermore, adapting lenses to the RP is why I have mirrorless systems to begin with, so if that's up your alley, this canon could be for your :)

WTF WAS THIS CAMERA?
มุมมอง 1.4K14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Well, it's the Light L16. An ambitious camera from the not so distant past. It could achieve images topping over 50 megapixels, and it does this in a unique way. The L16 has 16 different camera sensors! All of which use different focal lengths, apertures, and capture a singular image at the same time! Doing this allows for more detail, post focusing options when editing, and a very flexible fil...

There's TWO cameras I almost always blanket recommend to newbies, people looking to make their next step in their photographic journey, or those looking for a good all around camera. The 5d mark ii is all that! It's a cheap DSLR on the market today with a full frame sensor, 20 ish megapixels, weather-sealing, and a whole heritage of great lenses to tap into! I know I made a video on this camera...

This is the Canon G7. It's a 2 decade old CCD compact camera. It doesn't do one thing superior to a modern camera, and that is ok. It's not always about modern specs, nor about achieving a faux "filmic" look. Appreciate your gear for what it is, and not what it's not. Thanks all! mattsnotes thetantobykeith
You don't need a new camera.

Your gear is fine. Don't buy into the new gear hype and become a "buy hard." In direct contradiction to this statement, I took a broken Canon M3 and the Tartisan UFO lens while traveling around the states with me lol. To be fair, I grabbed it used and wanted to keep it within a $150 dollar budget. Coming in at $125, I think I did alright. Thanks for watching! mattsnotes instagram....

I thought this camera was stranger the more that I looked at it. At first, it seems as it's either a "dad" camcorder or an old Sony mirrorless. Then you realized they're mashed together, and branded with two odd companies of yesteryear. It was a fun idea for a camera and held a ton of potential, but I can see why it never caught on. Crop sensor DSLR cameras aren't dead. Crop Sensor DSLR cameras can be professionally built. Crop Sensor DSLR cameras can be a perfect option for an A, B, or C camera for literally any photographer lol. We need to stop with the full frame and mirrorless push. Sometimes are best options are the tried and true, and this is the case for the Nikon D7000. Thanks for viewing! mattsnotes ...
How do you IMPROVE a MINIMAL camera?

I used the newest member in the Camp Snap family, the 103! It's improved all around, which I thought it hard to do seeing as it's a camera that's supposed to have nothing lol. It's quicker to snap shots, has cleaner images, and a features to make filing and workflow much quicker than before, allowing you to get out and snap pics! Thanks for the watch! This Sony a99 in a modern world.
มุมมอง 4.5K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
This SLT by Sony was once their flagship camera, and it still packs a punch today. In body stabilization, a swivel screen 24 megapixel full-frame sensor, and once leading class dual phase AF are just a few notable features of this old body. I bought it for none of these things lol. I'm a huge fan of Minolta and Zeiss glass, so giving the A99 a test drive was a no brainer for me. Thanks for watc...
Why is the Canon G9xii so expensive?

I've had this Canon V10 for a couple months now and I just don't know what to really think of it lol. It shoots video with manual controls, but that's really about it. I purchased it for direct livestreaming and it can't even do that! Most of the marketing around this thing was for its live abilities.. Yes, you can vlog with it, but barely..

The perfect hybrid camera that nobody is talking about.
This year I moved from the D750 to the Z7 II because I wanted higher resolution and the price was affordable. BTW, bodies are currently 1999.95 in the US. One thing I learned quickly is that the Z mount lenses are typically better than the F mount lenses. The Z mount Tamron 70-300 totally trounces the older F mount 70-300 AF-S Nikkor. I expect that the same will apply with your 28-75mm f2.8, the new Z mount version will be much sharper with better contrast than your antique. Concerning the resolution of your D800E, 36Mp is actually a resolution that exactly matches the capability of 20/20 eyesight. So your camera was a good choice. However down the road you may want to consider moving to the Z mount because Mirrorless is the future.
Stove pipe glass itself is absolutely beautiful
I bought mine about a week ago in ALMOST pristine condition for $675 before tax. It’s definitely worth it at that price.
It amazes me that the RP is cheaper than the G7x iii right now. But hey, I'll take it! Lol
@ oh wow, That’s crazy! I wouldn’t spend that much on a point and shoot unless it was either a Leica or Fujifilm.
I hadn't thought anything about this camera, but when YOU muck with it, I like to see what you know. The contract that calls for full frame is interesting. The LENS is amazing. I'm sniffing around for it now, thanks to you. It'll be interesting to see what you think about using the RP for a bit.
Always appreciate your comments! Both the full frame and crop sensor Tokina opera f2.8 wide angles are solid! Bright, punchy contrast, frighteningly sharp, and dumb cheap!
Hi Matt! Great review! Never got into Canon, but looks like a nice set up, glad you found something that works for you! Thanks for sharing!
I collect cameras well.. for the fact that it is what I collect and enjoy doing, IE I'm a hardware nerd when it comes to Photography. I started collecting in 2017 when a lot of places like KEH were dumping their old stock of used pocket cameras and small "dead system" mirrorless cameras (like the Pentax Q) for Pennies on the Dollar (boy do they probably regret that decision now...) because smartphones were taking over casual photography so they just wanted to focus on "professionals" and get rid of their old (especially pocket camera) stock as no one wanted an "old obsolete camera". It's been interesting to see this influx of sudden "interest" in Digicams because I was enjoying them back before anyone thought they were "Cool". I could take advantage of this and sell a lot of my collection for a profit and I'm sure some people have. Its nice to see what I enjoy get appreciated by others for those who do start collecting Digicams because they are neat and get addicted to it. But on the flipside then you have the type who like you touched on are very vague about anything and will just argue that "It's Digital Film" while avoiding any direct questions about what they actually like about it or what features the camera has outside of just having an old CCD sensor in it it does get tiring. And of course, as many people have mentioned old digital camera collecting has gone from a cheap/manageable hobby to one that now rivals spending amounts of money on equivalent to what you'd spend on "Good" camera equipment. Don't get me started on how hard its been for me to come to grips with trying to find an "affordable" way to get a Fuji X-Trans sensor camera and a lens or two at this point... At the end of the day, I think it comes down to people doing their homework, and finding out there are less popular CCD DSLRs out there that while sure you can't fit them into your pocket will often get the look they are looking for as well; but since they are not small, compact or full of a ton of Fuji-like dials and controls on them and have a "boring" design you can still get them for cheap for arguably a lot more camera.
Well said friend! It's been eye watering seeing the prices of the Fujifilm system SKYROCKET over the past few years. Same goes for the Canon G7X iii even; I pre-ordered that and sold it within a few months after I was frustrated with the thing. I sold the G7X iii for 400 dollars and now it's... $1000? Wtf lol!
There's a number of really solid "Budget Full Frame DSLR" options out there now far more so then there was 5 years ago; and another really solid option is the Nikon D610 which was one of Nikon's best selling "Entry-Pro Level Full Frame" cameras so there are still a lot of them floating around. At the time compared to its competition (the Canon 6D mark I) it offered a lot more features such as dual memory cards and a fully weathersealed body comparable to to 5D for the same price while keeping a similar great low light performance to the Canon 6D (making it better then the 5D II and arguably better then the Mark III even in that one respect). The D610 was the camera that got me back into considering Full Frame again after having a less then great experience for what I paid with the Sony a99 (I really like the image output of the a99 but it has a lot of quirks) and the limited features of the first Canon 6D. Yeah, it's AF focus system chugs in low light (which is why I wound up buying a Nikon Z5 for a tool when I need that) but the fact you can find them for $300-400 now (I got mine for cheaper then that even) it's really hard to not put this camera as a solid contender for someone with a less then $500ish budget. That said, both the Canon 5D and the Nikon D6XX and D7XX series cameras are absolute tanks. They take a beating and just keep shooting. That alone I think is something we've lost in more recent years. And I also agree- there is something about Mirrorflippers that does make them better for certain things still. Having an optical Viewfinder for like Astral photography is a huge boon vs a mirrorless camera that may struggle to render a smooth preview in the EVF because it doesn't have enough light to make a smooth rolling shutter preview video. So as such while my mirrorless cameras are certainly "Newer and better" for a lot of things; I'm not getting rid of my DSLRs any time soon.
Thank you for the review. I love marketing
Very high quality channel right here. You'll get big, just keep grinding.
Thank you friend, that means a lot 🙏
Pretty cool device, or camera or whatever you want to call it. I feel like some of the images miss the tint or white-balance a bit, not something you can't fix in post though. Aside from that the images coming out of it are great!
I too was dropped on my head brother ❤
Hi Matt! My brother bought the L16 about 2 years ago, he never uses it, he is not into photography much, now it is sitting in a box, but I did have a chance to use it, It was interesting and somewhat frustrating. That being said, I think it would be interesting if someone could make one with maybe 3-4 lens. Make it a smaller size. Great photos and always thanks for sharing!
wouldn't that be too close to a phone with 3-4 lenses?
More or less! At the time it came out, it was a pretty novel device as not many smartphones adapted this philosophy. The idea of the l16 is cool, but it's execution could've been better, in my opinion lol
You outta try and borrow the camera and take some shots with it! I agree, I think one of these with maybe two or three one inch sensors with prime, maybe even compact optical zoom options, would be intriguing!
Well your photos look decent. It’s a marketing thing. You can spend $100 on a nice old vintage digital camera and have a lens failure or a battery die soon or not get a charger with it etc. I can understand the appeal for some. Not for me because I love the hunt for a fun older camera
Did you take the picture with the car in it on the Lola I really like that photo
Yep! Appreciate it!
Thank you!
Spot on! Also, I like a wee bit of edginess :)
I bought the new one and shutter lag being less prominent was a nice upgrade that gave me more peace of mind when in a rush taking photos and handing this to kids who want to take photos. It's also helped me how they say chimp out less and enjoy the moment. While I do have a lot of other digicams that are greater this camera just seemsto always have a charge when I need it in my car or bag. Also I kinda like the mystery of wondering how the photos turn out. I hope they continue to improve and listen.
cool location
I'm a semi PRO and the 5Dii is still my permanent backup body, with good glass you an shoot AMAZING images, the only potential drawback is that it can be a bit loud during weddings etc.
It's quite a bit larger than I thought.
My thoughts too lol
I shot 4x5 and got Merrills for high-resolution digital. 100 ISO, show up at dawn, use a tripod, pray for no wind...
What a scene! How did the shots normally turn out, especially when compared to a 4x5?
Hi Matt, I assume you are referring to a video on George Holden's channel, I mean in case anyone wants to go see the other side of the story. I don't know who Timmy is but doing a quick search I see that there are a lot of people who made the same video, ha ha ha. I think most of us realize that You Tube is one of the tools to make money. It is also a way to play at being an actor and abuse close-ups and use the voice of an "announcer." Again, the problem is not that there are certain creators or influencers but rather those who feed it. Maybe it sounds more honest to ask you if you buy them a coffee than to give you an affiliate link. But still, the important thing is to discuss the arguments and the truth for me is that in this case I don't think there is any deception o lie, I'm sorry. Or it could be that I don't see it. He is making a comparison of an old digital camera with a film camera, and as you say yourself and I suppose many already know, the first digital cameras with professional aspirations tried to simulate the look of film to be more "tolerable" to the eyes. that they planned to retire their film equipment before they lost any more value. But even if they were not videos with affiliate links, the mere fact that there is a video telling the advantages and disadvantages of a piece of gear is, for many, reason enough for there to be a price increase. I had G9 and I had the new X versions some that came with the folding screen. The image quality was good, the Canon colors were very good, but those zooms usually have problems with the flex cable that ends up breaking and to fix it you have to disassemble the entire camera, so it would be very expensive to pay for that repair. The folding screen on the X models is also of poor quality and the flex cable has the same problem, with the disadvantage that since it does not have a viewfinder you cannot use the camera. Another problem with those Canons is that they are not very dust-tight and because of that damn integrated optics you can't reach the sensor to clean it. Today they are overvalued. And thinking about it again, it is not very honest to speak well about a camera and put a link with affiliate links, it does not seem to be something very objective. Thank you so mutch.
If you don't need state of the art tracking, no one needs anything other than a D800E. I say this owning a D800E, D810 and Z8. D200 too! PS I Like the aspect but hate the droning music behind in parts. However I think you are great for making this.
New to your channel and brand new to photography but 20 seconds in and I gotta say I am sorry for your loss brother, I am dreading the fateful day that awaits myself. Much love! Now to finish the video :)
Appreciate that! I miss my peanut everyday but I'm happy he's no longer suffering. Thanks for your comment and watch! I hope you enjoy your photo journey; give me a holler if ya have any questions or need some guidance along the way :)
A lot of these CCD cameras as well have dead/stuck pixels but still command a premium [EXC+++] NEAR MINT "some dusts" type of price tag.
Damn man. Thanks you just cost me 350 bucks… But no for real. The markup influencer tax on cameras like the fuji x100 series is absurd. There’s no way I’m paying 1k for a camera from 2016 🤦🏻♂️
I remember when the Fujifilm Xpro 1 was 300 dollars routinely lol. No reason for these cameras to be so expensive
My last CCD camera was a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS and that got me through high-school photography class well while everyone else got DSLR (they're still good sport tho). Edited, printed & mated the JPEG (SX100 IS lacks RAW) for my High-school photo gallery. No one cared that its shot from my crappy Powershot SX100 IS or it look filmic. All I got was praises for my photos and the memories I made with my class mates. Now to be clear, its noisy at 200% zoom, not all of my shots made the cut but that's okay. I get good. As for the "unlimited film" digital cameras, just whip up your favorite photo editor and download a film simulation pack. Don't like it? Learn color grading & get good because these film result just don't fall on your lap. Else be ready to swallow the cost & shoot real film.
Well said. I'm sure your peers enjoyed well composed shots rather than a faux "filmic" look!
really great video!, i'm unsure how i feel about the really wide lens, but i liked it being in 4:3, and the room, my god the room. it looks amazing
Thanks for the comment! Yeah sorry about the wide lens lol; I'm running panasonic; the focus breathing was too much and I wanted to be in hand distance for manually focusing lol
I have owned and used the Canon G5, G11, and G15 digital compacts. Great cameras that produced great images. Loved them for travel/vacation cameras.
Personally, I don’t care about megapixels or color science, at the of the day I color grade my photos. I’ve been one of the victims of buying gear without needing new cameras. In fact I own 3 cameras, 2 from 2013 and 1 from 2020
Great video! I’m happy to use any camera which is why I’ve got so many of them and I have just as much fun with all of them :D I also never edit my photos. If it’s a bad shot it’s a bad shot and that’s on me.
I like this philosophy!
Hi from Italy.. Yes you're totally right when it comes to CCD I still take pictures with my olympus om1 because they look a lot like my canon eos 3 when I made the switch from film to digital back in the days. RAW are 10MB easy to adjust (no cropping) color are amazing especially if I pair it with my vintage zuiko lenses. I also bought a G12 when it came out to carry around with me and it's not the same thing (it's a toy) but there wasn't any smartphone so very usefull at the time. nowadays it's just hype if you want the film look buy an olympus OM1 or 2 camera the market doesn't care they're still cheap compare to leica and they are at the same level in fact better if you ask me.
Thanks for this comment! I will keep in mind these Olympus cameras as they sound enticing!
unrelated to the video; I love that you shoot in 4:3
Thanks Bean eater lol! I just got sick of looking at 16:9 slow motion videos of nothings that TH-cam "cinematic" creators are pumping out lol
The G7 is one of my favorites from this era - sort of compact, fast enough and nice looking photos. More settings (including RAW) can be unlocked with CHDK.
I'll have to play around with CHDK, thanks for the comment!
Just use a film camera to shoot film. It is not that expensive if you commit to it (self develop and scan). And if not, just enjoy ANY digital camera for what they are and produce. I have and old D700 that produces awesome images (way better than my Fuji XT30ii). But they are not film-like. They are...NIKON-digital like. When it comes to CCD, I shoot with an IR-converted D200. Images are great, too. Because of CCD? Probably not. Doesn't matter. Shoot with whatever camera you have. Gear is fun, but has minimal influence on your art.
That's an interesting camera indeed! I bet B&W looks pretty darn amazing on an IR converted d200!
I think it's very individual, some people like CCD for their colours some don't see it - but older folks who remember their colour prints from the lab in the 90s that's what they looked like - because scanners in the lab were usually 8MP CCD. Maybe you're too young to remember it. Anyway - shoot film if you're looking for the filmic look.
Well said!
I’ve always found the ”CCD looks likes film” thing a bit strange. To me old digicams look like early digital (which probably sounds like an obvious statement), and that’s one reason I like using them. I think these cameras can be appreciated for what they are without being compared to film.
Right there with ya pal! We should embrace the early digital look rather than compare it to film
nice video mr matt
Thanks for your support 🙏
Bought this camera when it came out. Sold it last year for just about what I paid for it in 2006😂 Unbelievable! Thank you hipsters! The sensor sucked on this camera then and sucks now. I forgot about this horrible camera after I got into Olympus and never looked back to this day.
Olympus is DISGUISTINGLY underrated (maybe it's better this way so prices stay reasonable lol)
Awesome set man! Its probably your house but its still really nice to look at.
I appreciate it! It's my giant old school room lol. Maybe I'll do a tour one day of the whole building (it would only be like 30 seconds long if it were just my quarters as it's essentially one open room 🤣)
I find the CCD thing kind of curious. I've got a couple of Oly DSLRs, and i had a third but sold it, and each of them have CCDs. So the Oly CCD (DSLR) range ran from 5mp to 8 then 10, with this occurring over about six years. The earliest (5MP) is the Oly E-1 and i shoot it for joy once a week. When i think about the 'difference' CCDs display, this is the one that most clearly illustrates it. And then, over those six years, that 'difference' kind of ebbed away. I think there's a lot to be said for the fact that in the early days, when those making the first break into digital introduced those early offerings, there was a real need to make these things look like the familiar in their output - a need for digital to ape film. As the potential of digital became apparent, and the market adjusted to the idea of digital, the need to lean into the film aesthetic diminished - CCD cameras became less 'filmic'. Now, i have no idea whether or not the character shown in the earliest digitals was down to the CCD sensor, or whether the swathe of other factors involved in churning out a digital image was actually the important bit - or some complex interaction between the two. What i do know is that my 2004 Oly E-1 - Oly's first Pro flagship - gives me a very different look from anything else i've shot with, and i like it a lot. Nice vid - have a good one!
Love this comment! Very well stated. That E-1 is a curious camera to me! The sensor is pretty darn unique if Kodak did indeed produce it. I'd love to try one out once I find one for a good price (another relatively pricey camera but for good reason I suppose!) I have a couple Kodak full frame sensors and they produce some of my favorite images straight out of the camera
Old but not gold🤦♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Damn near expensive though lol!
Im thinking of buying this camera for filmmaking, is this good for videography as well?
This is NOT a good video camera! It doesn't have anything needed for video, nor does it do it. Whats your budget?
@@MattsNotes for over 300 dollars ig..
Oh hell yeah brother, was waiting for you to drop a review on the old CCD Canon G-line Powershots! (have a G9 myself) On the cliche influencer vids don't forget the speed ramped shot of something mundane like their shoes or a flower in the garden, and the ever-annoying push the hand into the camera lens transition.
I'll add more slow motion shoe shots lol! The g series is great and I hope i don't come across as dawgging it; the cameras are very functional and well rounded in my opinion! I just think hipsters gave this thing a misleading title lol
Is no one going to acknowledge the fact that the thumbnail looks like a creepy eye?!… the greater the distance, the creepier it gets 😮👹 PS… most funest camera ever for sure
I was hoping someone would notice lol! Good to hear from ya man!
2:59 real 😅😂 love ya big guy
Love ya too shutter slaps and yes I got fat (working on it hahaha)
This is gold brotha 😂 and 100% true. I posted on Insta the other night asking why the Canon G7X series are going for such crazy money used and I was alerted that it is the preached camera of popular TikTokers. Makes me wonder if I could get $1k for my Canon SD400 ELPH 🤣
I'll buy it for $350
@ 🤣
The g7x lineup is STUDPID expensive lol! I pre-ordered the g7xiii and sold it shortly after due to its glaring shortcomings. 4k overheated, imaging was mediocre, and it just didn't shoot well in my opinion. I got 400 dollars for it. If I held onto it, it would be near or over 1,000! Crazy lol
In other news, I bet we could trick hipsters into driving the price of that SD400 lmao
@@MattsNotes Greatest CCD cam ever made lol. Doesn’t shoot RAW but damn those JPEG’s look filmic AF. 😂
You're totally right! The best thing we can do is to get the most out of the gear that we have. Actually, using old cameras is kind of a challenge because you have to work around the technical limitations that you may find. I enjoy that as a part of the process. Keep those good videos coming!
Great comment! The primitive nature of older cameras with less forgiving dynamic range, slower bursts, and less megapixels will make for a better photographer indeed
Preach it brother! I agree with you 100%! I enjoy using any form of camera, I find certain styles of cameras, sensors and lens have I look I enjoy, but that is my taste. The noise around new cameras compared to old is deafening at time. I found a sweet spot, where I can accomplish most if not all my photographic requirements with a small collection of cameras from different time periods. Always great content and insight! Thanks for sharing.... now I must get back to my unlimited ccd film camera 😆
But, but, this camera produces unlimited film like images and I'm gonna sell it for 99999$
