Preach it brother! I agree with you 100%! I enjoy using any form of camera, I find certain styles of cameras, sensors and lens have I look I enjoy, but that is my taste. The noise around new cameras compared to old is deafening at time. I found a sweet spot, where I can accomplish most if not all my photographic requirements with a small collection of cameras from different time periods. Always great content and insight! Thanks for sharing.... now I must get back to my unlimited ccd film camera 😆
You're totally right! The best thing we can do is to get the most out of the gear that we have. Actually, using old cameras is kind of a challenge because you have to work around the technical limitations that you may find. I enjoy that as a part of the process. Keep those good videos coming!
Great comment! The primitive nature of older cameras with less forgiving dynamic range, slower bursts, and less megapixels will make for a better photographer indeed
Damn man. Thanks you just cost me 350 bucks… But no for real. The markup influencer tax on cameras like the fuji x100 series is absurd. There’s no way I’m paying 1k for a camera from 2016 🤦🏻♂️
I collect cameras well.. for the fact that it is what I collect and enjoy doing, IE I'm a hardware nerd when it comes to Photography. I started collecting in 2017 when a lot of places like KEH were dumping their old stock of used pocket cameras and small "dead system" mirrorless cameras (like the Pentax Q) for Pennies on the Dollar (boy do they probably regret that decision now...) because smartphones were taking over casual photography so they just wanted to focus on "professionals" and get rid of their old (especially pocket camera) stock as no one wanted an "old obsolete camera". It's been interesting to see this influx of sudden "interest" in Digicams because I was enjoying them back before anyone thought they were "Cool". I could take advantage of this and sell a lot of my collection for a profit and I'm sure some people have. Its nice to see what I enjoy get appreciated by others for those who do start collecting Digicams because they are neat and get addicted to it. But on the flipside then you have the type who like you touched on are very vague about anything and will just argue that "It's Digital Film" while avoiding any direct questions about what they actually like about it or what features the camera has outside of just having an old CCD sensor in it it does get tiring. And of course, as many people have mentioned old digital camera collecting has gone from a cheap/manageable hobby to one that now rivals spending amounts of money on equivalent to what you'd spend on "Good" camera equipment. Don't get me started on how hard its been for me to come to grips with trying to find an "affordable" way to get a Fuji X-Trans sensor camera and a lens or two at this point... At the end of the day, I think it comes down to people doing their homework, and finding out there are less popular CCD DSLRs out there that while sure you can't fit them into your pocket will often get the look they are looking for as well; but since they are not small, compact or full of a ton of Fuji-like dials and controls on them and have a "boring" design you can still get them for cheap for arguably a lot more camera.
Well said friend! It's been eye watering seeing the prices of the Fujifilm system SKYROCKET over the past few years. Same goes for the Canon G7X iii even; I pre-ordered that and sold it within a few months after I was frustrated with the thing. I sold the G7X iii for 400 dollars and now it's... $1000? Wtf lol!
Thanks for the comment! Yeah sorry about the wide lens lol; I'm running panasonic; the focus breathing was too much and I wanted to be in hand distance for manually focusing lol
I think it's very individual, some people like CCD for their colours some don't see it - but older folks who remember their colour prints from the lab in the 90s that's what they looked like - because scanners in the lab were usually 8MP CCD. Maybe you're too young to remember it. Anyway - shoot film if you're looking for the filmic look.
The G7 is one of my favorites from this era - sort of compact, fast enough and nice looking photos. More settings (including RAW) can be unlocked with CHDK.
Hi from Italy.. Yes you're totally right when it comes to CCD I still take pictures with my olympus om1 because they look a lot like my canon eos 3 when I made the switch from film to digital back in the days. RAW are 10MB easy to adjust (no cropping) color are amazing especially if I pair it with my vintage zuiko lenses. I also bought a G12 when it came out to carry around with me and it's not the same thing (it's a toy) but there wasn't any smartphone so very usefull at the time. nowadays it's just hype if you want the film look buy an olympus OM1 or 2 camera the market doesn't care they're still cheap compare to leica and they are at the same level in fact better if you ask me.
Great video! I’m happy to use any camera which is why I’ve got so many of them and I have just as much fun with all of them :D I also never edit my photos. If it’s a bad shot it’s a bad shot and that’s on me.
My last CCD camera was a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS and that got me through high-school photography class well while everyone else got DSLR (they're still good sport tho). Edited, printed & mated the JPEG (SX100 IS lacks RAW) for my High-school photo gallery. No one cared that its shot from my crappy Powershot SX100 IS or it look filmic. All I got was praises for my photos and the memories I made with my class mates. Now to be clear, its noisy at 200% zoom, not all of my shots made the cut but that's okay. I get good. As for the "unlimited film" digital cameras, just whip up your favorite photo editor and download a film simulation pack. Don't like it? Learn color grading & get good because these film result just don't fall on your lap. Else be ready to swallow the cost & shoot real film.
I’ve always found the ”CCD looks likes film” thing a bit strange. To me old digicams look like early digital (which probably sounds like an obvious statement), and that’s one reason I like using them. I think these cameras can be appreciated for what they are without being compared to film.
I find the CCD thing kind of curious. I've got a couple of Oly DSLRs, and i had a third but sold it, and each of them have CCDs. So the Oly CCD (DSLR) range ran from 5mp to 8 then 10, with this occurring over about six years. The earliest (5MP) is the Oly E-1 and i shoot it for joy once a week. When i think about the 'difference' CCDs display, this is the one that most clearly illustrates it. And then, over those six years, that 'difference' kind of ebbed away. I think there's a lot to be said for the fact that in the early days, when those making the first break into digital introduced those early offerings, there was a real need to make these things look like the familiar in their output - a need for digital to ape film. As the potential of digital became apparent, and the market adjusted to the idea of digital, the need to lean into the film aesthetic diminished - CCD cameras became less 'filmic'. Now, i have no idea whether or not the character shown in the earliest digitals was down to the CCD sensor, or whether the swathe of other factors involved in churning out a digital image was actually the important bit - or some complex interaction between the two. What i do know is that my 2004 Oly E-1 - Oly's first Pro flagship - gives me a very different look from anything else i've shot with, and i like it a lot. Nice vid - have a good one!
Love this comment! Very well stated. That E-1 is a curious camera to me! The sensor is pretty darn unique if Kodak did indeed produce it. I'd love to try one out once I find one for a good price (another relatively pricey camera but for good reason I suppose!) I have a couple Kodak full frame sensors and they produce some of my favorite images straight out of the camera
Personally, I don’t care about megapixels or color science, at the of the day I color grade my photos. I’ve been one of the victims of buying gear without needing new cameras. In fact I own 3 cameras, 2 from 2013 and 1 from 2020
I appreciate it! It's my giant old school room lol. Maybe I'll do a tour one day of the whole building (it would only be like 30 seconds long if it were just my quarters as it's essentially one open room 🤣)
Oh hell yeah brother, was waiting for you to drop a review on the old CCD Canon G-line Powershots! (have a G9 myself) On the cliche influencer vids don't forget the speed ramped shot of something mundane like their shoes or a flower in the garden, and the ever-annoying push the hand into the camera lens transition.
I'll add more slow motion shoe shots lol! The g series is great and I hope i don't come across as dawgging it; the cameras are very functional and well rounded in my opinion! I just think hipsters gave this thing a misleading title lol
Bought this camera when it came out. Sold it last year for just about what I paid for it in 2006😂 Unbelievable! Thank you hipsters! The sensor sucked on this camera then and sucks now. I forgot about this horrible camera after I got into Olympus and never looked back to this day.
Just use a film camera to shoot film. It is not that expensive if you commit to it (self develop and scan). And if not, just enjoy ANY digital camera for what they are and produce. I have and old D700 that produces awesome images (way better than my Fuji XT30ii). But they are not film-like. They are...NIKON-digital like. When it comes to CCD, I shoot with an IR-converted D200. Images are great, too. Because of CCD? Probably not. Doesn't matter. Shoot with whatever camera you have. Gear is fun, but has minimal influence on your art.
Hi Matt, I assume you are referring to a video on George Holden's channel, I mean in case anyone wants to go see the other side of the story. I don't know who Timmy is but doing a quick search I see that there are a lot of people who made the same video, ha ha ha. I think most of us realize that You Tube is one of the tools to make money. It is also a way to play at being an actor and abuse close-ups and use the voice of an "announcer." Again, the problem is not that there are certain creators or influencers but rather those who feed it. Maybe it sounds more honest to ask you if you buy them a coffee than to give you an affiliate link. But still, the important thing is to discuss the arguments and the truth for me is that in this case I don't think there is any deception o lie, I'm sorry. Or it could be that I don't see it. He is making a comparison of an old digital camera with a film camera, and as you say yourself and I suppose many already know, the first digital cameras with professional aspirations tried to simulate the look of film to be more "tolerable" to the eyes. that they planned to retire their film equipment before they lost any more value. But even if they were not videos with affiliate links, the mere fact that there is a video telling the advantages and disadvantages of a piece of gear is, for many, reason enough for there to be a price increase. I had G9 and I had the new X versions some that came with the folding screen. The image quality was good, the Canon colors were very good, but those zooms usually have problems with the flex cable that ends up breaking and to fix it you have to disassemble the entire camera, so it would be very expensive to pay for that repair. The folding screen on the X models is also of poor quality and the flex cable has the same problem, with the disadvantage that since it does not have a viewfinder you cannot use the camera. Another problem with those Canons is that they are not very dust-tight and because of that damn integrated optics you can't reach the sensor to clean it. Today they are overvalued. And thinking about it again, it is not very honest to speak well about a camera and put a link with affiliate links, it does not seem to be something very objective. Thank you so mutch.
This is gold brotha 😂 and 100% true. I posted on Insta the other night asking why the Canon G7X series are going for such crazy money used and I was alerted that it is the preached camera of popular TikTokers. Makes me wonder if I could get $1k for my Canon SD400 ELPH 🤣
The g7x lineup is STUDPID expensive lol! I pre-ordered the g7xiii and sold it shortly after due to its glaring shortcomings. 4k overheated, imaging was mediocre, and it just didn't shoot well in my opinion. I got 400 dollars for it. If I held onto it, it would be near or over 1,000! Crazy lol
But, but, this camera produces unlimited film like images and I'm gonna sell it for 99999$
Preach it brother! I agree with you 100%! I enjoy using any form of camera, I find certain styles of cameras, sensors and lens have I look I enjoy, but that is my taste. A lot of these CCD cameras as well have dead/stuck pixels but still command a premium [EXC+++] NEAR MINT "some dusts" type of price tag.
You're totally right! The best thing we can do is to get the most out of the gear that we have. Actually, using old cameras is kind of a challenge because you have to work around the technical limitations that you may find. I enjoy that as a part of the process. Keep those good videos coming!

I have owned and used the Canon G5, G11, and G15 digital compacts.
Great cameras that produced great images. Loved them for travel/vacation cameras.
Damn man. Thanks you just cost me 350 bucks…
