I sold my Nikon Z7 for this.

  • I went back to the D800e for my "high resolution" photography sensor. I think these old Nikon bodies certainly have a place in modern photography, even for "professional" work.
Nikon has some of my favorite images coming straight from the camera, especially their past bodies. The D800e is the embodiment of this because of its large megapixel full frame sensor, beautiful dynamic range, and classic Nikon colors.
    Thanks for watching!

Mate, I'm still using a D700 with an old 50mm D lend as my main rig and it takes photos in 2024 that are just as stunning as the photos it took in 2009. Up until a couple of months ago I was also using a Pentax K-r, a consumer grade rig that punched well above it's weight. I gifted the K-r to a friend who is just starting out in photography and he loves it as much as I did. I'm also still using an Olympus E300 with an old 8 meg kodak ccd sensor and the photos I get from it are beautiful. The megapixel wars are marketing brainworms for people who think expensive gear equals good shots. I love your content Matt, fight the power my friend.

I also still have my Nikon D700, D4, but I also have the Z6 and as I work at Panasonic I have the S1R and the S5II and all the lenses (2.8, 1.4 and 1.8)
I love shooting with my Nikon D4, the only thing missing from DSLRs is sensor stabilization.
If I take a handheld photo with my 105mm 1.4E on my DSLR vs my Z6 it's incomparable the Z6 has no movement blur and I can go very low in shutter speed, whereas with the 105 in any case, I can't do it below 1/125th, whereas with the Z6, I can go very, very low and not have any motion blur.
But I still prefer to use my D4, so both systems have their advantages and disadvantages

This is still my best camera I owned as I just upgraded to this from D700 a few years ago. I still owned both of them and I owned many old AF lenses and Z7 is still too expensive for me so I don't really want to move up that way.
When I look at my old pictures taken by D700 it's still look stunning.

Matt, I am currently using 5--16mp cameras, whether it is DSLR or point and shoots! My Pentax K10d ( 10mp) is still working after 14 years of use, I don't think modern cameras are made to last that long. Most of my favorite camera are the CCD cameras ones that are ancient for most people. If something would break it is less to replace. The best part is the vintage lens on those Dslrs. Maybe in the future I will upgrade, but as of right now...nope...seems I can get by with what I have. Thanks for sharing!

I also have the Sony A7C and A7RIV, all good cameras, but the d800E to me was the best value for the money. I love the d800E shooting landscape especially in high contrast scenes, which is why I still use it to this day, often puts the Sony to shame in its output.

    • @MattsNotes
      @MattsNotes  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the question, Jim!
The D850 edges out the D800 in video as it has 4k and slow motion options. The D800 is workable in my opinion; it has full HD and a mic jack.
In short, the d850 could be a better option for video. The d800 is significantly more affordable however, and if you're working within the D850 budget, I'd almost rather just grab a D800, and a budget friendly camera with good video specs (like a used nikon z30 and nikon f to z adapter) then you'd benefit from multiple camera angles while likely still coming under the price of one d850 lol.
      I hope that helps!

@otes It's solid. Depending on the nature of the subject matter, both my Sigma sd Quattro and my older Sigma SD1 Merrill can give the 51MP Canon 5DsR a run for its money with their respective 20MP and 15MP. At the current price point though, there is hardly more resolution for the dollar on the market than the 5DsR. And EF lenses are plenty and cheap. I can only highly recommend that setup.

Been thinking about the D800e as well. I liked minty cameras so it's still a bit expensive, roughly 600-700 dollars in Europe. They appear to be a bit rare as well (in comparison to D800s). The D800E also has the best shutter sound of all Nikon DSLRs imo!
Used to have a Z7 too and liked it image quality wise. But in terms of fun, I dislike the Zs, even the ZF I currently own. The shutter sound is a big turn off. Just feels so dead, like those of Sony cameras. Hoping for a change in the Z6iii but I expect they recycle the shutter mechanism again. Luckily, I have got a D50, D200, D610 and a D5 to turn to when I want to enjoy shooting. ;-)

Even though D800E 'has the best shutter sound', the shutter mechanism is not as good as that of D810.. you can get blur picture when use slower shutter speed due to mirror movement inside d800e's shutter mechanism.

@@user-ly2pz1vt5r Very good point, I did not know that. I think I'd go the D800E regardless. Shutter shock is a problem with any camera above 24MP. Mirrorless is much better in this area, at least when there is ibis.
