So when my grandpa died, one of my aunts started a crusade that my dad should be excluded from anything that might be a memento because they all suspected he wasn’t grandpa’s biochild. Even though I was an adult and was told from childhood that it was possible that grandpa wasn’t really my grandpa, the suspected other man was dead before I was born, grandpa never treated me anything except like a normal grandkid so he was truly my grandpa. Finding out at that point that 3 out of my 5 aunts/uncles viewed me (by extension of my dad) as not TRULY family was earth shattering. So I have empathy for the stepkids. It’s absolutely awful to think X people are your family and only find out after Y person dies that they didn’t view you that way. But it’s the parent’s fault for misleading the stepkids when THEY knew how the extended family felt
