    I had a TV like this one back in the 2000s and early 2010s. But it started to break, when you turned it on, it would show a strangely bright white screen and the screen was slightly vertically compressed. We had to hit the sides and then suddenly the screen was normal colors and the top and bottom of the screen was properly filled.

I have a Philips 28PT5107/01 and after often hearing that I should get a curved TV because of scrolling problems, I bought this TV but unfortunately it has the magic carpet effect when scrolling horizontally. Can this effect be corrected? Possibly via the service menu. Or do I have to unscrew the TV and change something on the motherboard? Or am I just unlucky and have to live with the effect? Many thanks in advance for your advice :)

    Dithering is a bit of a tricky subject, because it didnt just pertain to the Genesis. It was a common practice for the era, NES, SNES, 3DO, etc all had games with dithering patterns. Even early 3D games for the PS1 and Saturn had dithering for stuff like shadows and to fake transparency. Ultimately I think it's up to you, my main thing is cleaning up the dot crawl to a minimum.

    These crts weren't design for gamers...they were for general tv viewing. You gamers should think about connecting your games to todays HD tvs bid screens intead! Good grief!!

    • @P-0-Seventeen
      @P-0-Seventeen หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Chattanoogachoochoo_0105a You're leaving out the part that many crt tvs have media inputs to plug in a vcr, dvd player, or game console. Not to mention games of these eras were made specifically for a CRT in mind as that's what everyone was using. You should see how old consoles look on HD tvs when you plug them in normally. Without a proper external scaler (which can costs quite a bit of money if youre wanting something quality), you not only get non-integer scaling leaving images a blurry mess, but it's also usually being linedoubled to "fit" a certain resolution, and that's not even adding into anything such as widescreen stretching an image, and these old games would be running on a non-native resolution screen to begin with, adding the issues mentioned above that you don't have on a crt. Flat-screen tvs have an inherent disadvantage as they only have one true native resolution (usually 1080p nowadays in a 16:9 format). CRTs on the other hand don't have this issue, and natively run these older resolutions (240p/480i) with the analog effects implemented by game developers (and other media such as vhs) taking hold, creating an otherworldly (and pretty much always BETTER) image. Moral of the story is run it native how it should be, not on something it wasn't meant for. Also most new HD flatscreens only have hdmi in so you're out of luck just normally plugging an old console in, unless it's something 7th gen like an Xbox 360(with hdmi) or ps3. Also, one last thing. There are plenty of comparison pictures and videos showing the benefits of the image presented on crts vs HD flat-screens, and that's also not even getting into stuff such as input lag, ghosting/motion blur, bad black levels (aside from on an oled or plasma), and all the previous issues mentioned. Just from the image standpoint alone is enough to pick up one of these old heavy pieces and continue using them for old games/media. I've never advocated for watching TV purely on these things as they've outlived their time for that (apart from a select few, wide HD crts to name one category), but to ignore everything else it was plenty good if not far better for does not provide a fair comparison. Also I'm not saying you couldn't run your consoles on said HD flatscreens nowadays either, given I mentioned external scalers and all that. But your mileage may vary on the experience given you're running something made for the technology of its time on something modern.

      @@P-0-Seventeen Just trying to figure out which is better: JVC av-27d201 or JVC av-32920 or Sony kv-27s36. Big decisions tonight haha

      @DTheVigne either jvc, the 32" for its size works if it doesn't have a Thomson tube because it's a bonded yoke, meaning there's not much for convergence adjustments. But the D series 27" is the only one with component out of the bunch so that might be preferred. The sony has svid too but eh, that D series is better lol

    5:13 The TVL count is not too high on this, it actually looks kind of identical to a 14" consumer set. So I would definitely advise to pick that, because the consumer set is like 25 bucks, and this is like what, 200-250? And you have a much larger image.

      @P-0-Seventeen หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lovemadeinjapan depends on what you prefer, but tvl count is only a small part of an overall picture being good. You're forgetting HV regulation (which can cause blooming and defocusing if it's not good), limited geometry adjustments depending on the crt, and more often worse convergence, color accuracy, scanline detail, and of course what sort of inputs you'll get with a typical 250tvl consumer set.

      @@P-0-Seventeen I've seen them side by side, and maybe the accuracy is better, but the subjective image is nicer on the consumer sets: brighter, more saturated colours, nicer pixel rendition. Inputs are great on consumer sets, maybe even better. On hours are lower too, especially the tiny sets often only saw like 1000 hours of use. I've a sony with dual SCART RGB, S-video, composite, and you can use a remote to toggle the inputs. Also it has proper 2x20W speakers for nice stereo. Considering the 1/10th price, I see no reason to get a PVM for gaming.

      @lovemadeinjapan you know you can turn up brightness and color saturation on a pvm just like this one if you really wanted? Also the only input a consumer set will objectively have over any video monitor is rf, and most small 13" consumer sets won't come with svideo, just composite. Now in terms of actual use case, you're not wrong. You don't need a pvm to play games with and it is kind of a meme, but it's still notably sharper and more defined details albeit at a pretty higher price depending on what set you look at. There are plenty of video monitors where the price isn't worth it, but you can't ignore the people posting "retro gaming" tvs that have been well used for hundreds either. All in all it's still up to you on what you prefer when it comes to the level of detail you want, as it's subjective. People in the EU with PAL RGB standard would hate looking at composite video compared to NTSC here who got that as their standard.

    A little inquiry What button do you use to enter Service Mode on your JVC TV? I have an original JVC remote, but I don't know how to press it to enter Service Mode. Could you please tell me?

      @de3pmech311 depending on the jvc, you're gonna hit sleep timer to pop that up on the screen, then display+video status buttons at the same time

    Love these videos! Do you have any resources for getting CRT's repaired and tuned up? Or is this something that, in this point in time, you basically have to learn and do yourself. I've had so many people literally get upset with me for asking this question and I don't know why. I understand its legacy tech but I feel like there's gotta be a small network out there somewhere.

      @calvinpiktel5385 a lot of times it's looking up the model number and hoping there's a service manual posted for it. Sometimes it's not though, but for these sonys they're pretty common. The rest involving calibration is something you learn on your own just from playing with it/talking to others about what to do, so you kind of work at it over time
