Just picked up this exact same set for 20$ today, drove half an hour to pick it up Checked the number of hours of use, 170hrs aka 7 days. Honestly feels like I've just hit the jackpot, geometry is almost perfect, it's as if it was never used (looking at the number of hours it might as well have been)
Just found a JVC JVC I'Art AV-14F703 at a junkyard last week -- now have both a Toshiba & a JVC of this Orion tube type. Need to re-check out both of your adjustment videos after the JVC remote comes in. Great video!
These later Toshiba AF models really do handle composite extremely well. Hardly noticed a difference between S-video and composite on my 24AF45. Keep up the good work, brotha! 🤘
I got my 14AF44 from Goodwill for 5 bucks (just checked the sticker) then found a 14AF45 on the side of the road later that week (cleaned up perfect). I already had a 14AF43 (probably another Goodwill find) and a few of the larger models so I’m really spoiled by my luck. :)
Awesome tube tv, I have the same model here, I use a bunch of consoles (snes/genesis/pc-engine), all with scart RGBs cables and using a converter to component, the image is near perfection without any changes at all, I just pic it up and plug it the cables, + this is a stereo tv, pure awesomeness ! (no RGB conversion is needed in my opinion at all)
5:16 I did the same thing to my JVC 20’ inch CRT from October 2001 and it worked! The only 2 things it’s missing is the screen size option were I can make the display bigger or smaller
I’m actually currently thinking about getting one of these to replace my current crt, which is a samsung gx tv. But after seeing this video I’m definitely gonna try to search for one immediately.
Looks like the V Line needs adjusted.. The middle of the screen is a bit squished horizontally. You can see during the demo when the characters are walking upwards; it's warping the background from tall to short to tall as objects go from top to middle to bottom of the screen
I just found an 14AF46 on the sidewalk last night and been trying it out through component-video. Nice little set that I'm assuming is the same, but I'm disappointed by its picture quality compared with my Sony Wega (KV-27FS12). It's possible its worn out though, it has over 12,000 hours usage and may have a large swath of phosphor burn-in. I may try adjusting the screen/focus on the flyback. Nice color mind you, and almost perfect geometry (none of that bowing I need to fix on my Sony).
I’ve had one of these on my desk for streaming for a few years now, the composite out works for all the inputs which is super useful. Mine definitely has some geometry issues but I hope I can tear into it at some point and improve that.
not sure about this model but i have the 14AF42 and the composite OUT does NOT work for all inputs, its only for the front composite only, it wont work with SVideo or Component
@@chrisbroome6423 i tired this a few weeks ago, to route all the audio to my AV receiver and the only one it works with is the front composite port; so it does not work with SVideo/Component in the rear; but i have a different model (14AF42) then this one in the video
Liked and Subscribed. I have this exact same set and love it. The horizontal image is a bit cut off on the right side (looking out from the set) and offset on the left side (looking out from the set) I have adjusted the image is much as possible in the service menu. If I were to adjust by taking the TV apart what would I adjust? Thanks!
You will most likely need to adjust the rings on the deflection coil. The service manual (quick Google search will find it for you) will show you exacty what each ring does, and most Toshiba/orion manuals have diagrams that show how each ring works. If that fails, you can buy or make convergence strips and wedge them in between the yoke and the tube to adjust the corner geometry. There's no tilt in the service menu, so if you need to rotate the image you will have to loosen the clamp on the yoke and manually rotate it until it's straight. If you don't have 240p test suite yet, definitely download that and use it on one of your consoles to calibrate the tv's image
@@jakeiswayblack3377 Hey thanks for the response I do have the 240P test. it confirmed very slight offset but the geometry is damn near perfect. I will see if I can adjust the rings to completely center the image.
JVC remote came in! Question for you! Would you happen to have any Service Menu settings you recommend for these units? I'm sure the settings will be slightly off depending on the tubes age and usage time, but it might be an interesting guide video! Thanks all the same! Will be referencing this video from time to time regardless for my sets.
I just found one today at the recycling center, cleaned it up and turns on. I've never really played around with the settings you showed, what are some maintenance tips you recommend for a beginner?
I picked one of these up in 2020 at a St Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Idaho for $5. Still kicking myself for not picking up the 24" Toshiba AF they also had at the time for $12. Oh well. I do love the 14" which has been perfect for my workshop retro game setup.
Did you disable the velocity modulation? I have a few of these including 14AF43, 14AF44, and 14AF45. I also have larger ones like a 20AF45 and even larger ones in storage. The last digit only seems to correspond to manufacture date and not actual model differences since my 43, 44, and 45 sets appear identical except for being made in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
I have the same set. It is one of the better 13-inch I have ever owned. Only problem with mine is that it's composite output is broken. It displays a picture but it looks as if it's on the wrong resolution. Odd.
What's the part number on the tube? I heard that there are some chungwa tubes rebadged as Orion. Also it'd be cool if you had a video of the adjustments you made. I have a 14" truflat with component and It could use a slight adjustment to focus. It's a similar set overall
Any idea what pressing the numbers in the service menu does on the remote? I pressed 1 and I saw a -1 pop up and not sure what that did if anything (cant tell). Im used to my trinitron where you use numbers 1 and 4 to scroll through options. Thx.
What’s interesting is the whole “re-badging” concept. I have a 32” Apex that has a Toshiba CRT. Technically it’s a Toshiba re-badged as an Apex. Ironically a Toshiba 32” 32AF46 is a rebadged Orion. Funny how that works.
Finally getting around to trying to fix this thing, and for the life of me I cannot get the back panel of the casing to let go on the inputs. Am I missing someting? A clip or a screw?
I have this same set. Unfortunately it has a horizonal bend at the top. Still playable but kinda distracting. I wish I had someone local to fix it, if possible..
Hey, man! I just picked up one of these. Mine has some inward bending on the right side, also the picture looks slightly tilted. I've seen this on a few CRTs but never attempted a fix. I may on this one, do you have any tips? Service menu helped a bit but I think maybe the yolk may need adjusting on the actual inside of the TV...
Unfortunately you gotta go dig into the back of the tube, adjust the yoke and all that. The corners need some convergence strips or magnets to try and pull em out some
You can't unless you buy another tv with more, however you can buy a composite switch box which can connect multiple composite/s-video/component ports (depending on which one you get) to one. You just switch inputs with a button
I've got an 20AF45 that makes a buzzing noise from inside the housing. Not audio interference though. Any idea if it's failing capacitors causing it or a flyback issue?

As long as a flat CRT has the horizontal scrolling/vert. Linearity dialed in, without the wonky warping effect, it already wins my heart
Picked one of these up a few years ago, it only had 100 hours used. Such a great little set!

Definitely a must have,i,ve seen enough HD & 4K tv’s,
I like those flat crt tv’s much better.
Orion tubes are fine. They get alot of hate but i like the look they produce

Orion made some of the best tubes. They were the biggest tube producers.
I have the 27AF43 and boy I must say it's a nice set. I just wish I had this one instead since I prefer the smaller size.

Thanks ,I got one for free and this video helped me out with the service menu , I have a little bit of tilt on one side , any way to fix this ? Thanks
