    Civilized Americans? Chinese are barely civilized. And I say that meaning you can find "uncivilized" people in both countries. What do you think? Have you seen comments on TH-cam posts by Chinese in the mid-2010s? Even now? They'd say the most vicious shit. Just say you want a highly censored app which is an opinion to start. Do people act toxic on the internet? Of course. But it also depends on the environment. Maybe the app itself is regulated in such a way. But even the Americans so to speak who are on the app are being respectful by default.... because people are generally respectful by default.

    I noticed the same thing, that everyone is extra polite right now, and this is classic human behavior. When I met my worst school bully for the first time, he was really nice and wanted to be my friend as well (that was a good few weeks I'll never get back). And then when people get comfortable and overconfident, they start acting a fool and forming tribes again. I really believe this is the calm before the storm, and I worry that this mass migration to xiaohongshu will cause a race war, because the behaviors of a collective group of people from an entirely different country are very different from that of another country. Our PC culture is not understood in other parts of the world in the same way. When Americans finally find out how racist/judgemental the Chinese are (which has been completely normalized there), the Americans are going to have something to say about that. Hashtags will pop up such as #gobacktoAmerica or something like that as the Chinese try to fight off yet again, another unwitting colonization by white people, who think their way is the best way.

    Except 小红书 is still a propaganda arm (like TikTok) of the CCP. Try posting anything critical of China; it will be immediately deleted, shadow-banned or straight-up banned (like on TikTok, in case you didn't know). Now do the same and criticize the US or any other country that isn't an ally of China, and if anything it will get promoted. That's why we shouldn't be using those apps. You will not see the diversity of people on Xiaohongshu. You will see a specific political narrative that is largely informed and controlled by the Chinese government, and the effects of generational brainwashing (not that analogs don't exist in the West) on people's views and behaviours. Yes, most Chinese are quite decent and level-headed as long as you don't criticize their nation, and that's because they're pragmatic and know that if you indulge in controversial topics, you are putting your life and your family's life at serious risk. They've internalized those facts by aligning with the ideology in place. The youth is strictly controlled so that Tiananmen never happens again. Without economic incentives, most Chinese hold no value or principles whatsoever - they've been made to be economical puppets that are dead inside beyond the small ephemeral joys of capitalistic consumerism. This is what's worthy of criticism, and that's what will never be allowed on a CCP-controlled space, and that's why none of you should support or us Chinese social media apps. China is more than happy that the world is finally aligning with their own authoritarian practices; it normalizes what they do and almost makes them seem good for being monomaniacal compulsive liars and abusers of human rights.

    I've been on RedNote a few days so I'm not an expert but I've already noticed a shift between Day 1 and Day 3. Starting on Day 1 it was like being a tourist in a new country, learning quickly what the customs are and having meaningful cultural exchange. Learned some Chinese words, slang, and the "vibe" of RedNote. I think the tone on RedNote is/was like having calm conversations on Reddit + with more photos. It seems easier to have a true conversation, people reply, it's not just silent Likes and Upvotes and snark. As the TikTok shutdown approached on Sunday evening, influencers started porting over their slop and trying to speak mainly towards American "TikTok refugees." The Chinese users noticed and emphasized RedNote is not TikTok and it was not made for short form. The TikTok userbase is just sooo juvenile, snarky, and focused on followers/attention instead of conversation.

I don't imagine teen agers running amok in China or France exercise improved judgement when they're all universally coming up short on maturity and global comprehension. If RedNote were adult conversations I wouldn't mind, but the unwillingness of CCP to allow for reasoned debates isn't a rule I can respect. I will decline participation in crooked games they play, especially when the consequences for Chinese citizens I might befriend will be subjected to persecution for merely considering an idea (whether good or bad ideas, doesn't matter).

    The Tiananmen Square protests, known within China as the June Fourth Incident, were student-led demonstrations held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, lasting from 15 April to 4 June 1989. After weeks of unsuccessful attempts between the demonstrators and the Chinese government to find a peaceful resolution, the Chinese government deployed troops to occupy the square on the night of 3 June in what is referred to as the Tiananmen Square massacre. The events are sometimes called the '89 Democracy Movement, the Tiananmen Square Incident, or the Tiananmen uprising. here's some honey for your dear leader- 🍯🍯🍯🍯. if you know you know, operation honeypot GO! Binchun’s literary treatment of European women adopted a strategic framing similar to his writing on Western courts, machines, and cities. He emphasized their aesthetically pleasing aspects in a language of assimilation, leaving out any content which might appear troubling or difficult to explain. For a comparison, Zhang Deyi filled his account with strange observations such as the custom whereby young men and women “pecked the back of their own hands to pass kisses in the air,” the common practice at Windsor Castle where one “held and smelled” the Queen’s extended hand to show respect, and the rumors about pretty shop attendants who lured rich customers into becoming their liaisons. Although Binchun likely encountered many of the same stories, he made no mention of them. Instead, he explained that foreigners’ customs, strange though they might appear at first, were all perfectly sensible to a Chinese gentleman like him. As he wrote in a set of poems about European women: “only after a handshake could one be said to have fulfilled the ritual.” Asking his readers not to blame him for transgressing the Confucian tradition of gender segregation in a public space, he wrote, “I am afraid that you, my reader, might blame me for my careless conduct, but it wasn’t that I loved their soft hands.” In a note below, he added that handshaking was a sign of respect performed regardless of sex.

    In her study of women in late imperial China, Susan Mann has described two familiar tropes in Qing literary constructions of women: the secluded, pure-minded guixiu and the cultivated and sensuous courtesan. Binchun’s writing about upper-class European women combined the two categories, alternating between their learning, cultivation, playful vivacity, and stunning beauty. As party hostesses, European women often resembled upper-class Confucian ladies in thoughtfulness and wisdom. A princess, for example, was praised for “belaboring herself exchanging greetings” with him. The queen of Prussia had a “gentle and honorable manner,” with a radiating modesty and a genial voice. These honorable women were physically attractive, featuring pleasing fragrance, elegant figures and stunning faces. In a group of three poems devoted to European customs, he portrayed himself like a chivalrous gentleman guarding the ladies from smokers: “Women are untouched by worldly smog. So please! Do not let your tobacco near them.” The poem was followed by a note explaining that, given the high respect society paid to women, men should avoid women’s presence whenever they smoked. On other occasions - especially with younger guests - his depictions of women resembled courtesans more closely. He befriended them unapologetically, playing games with them, and in one instance receiving from two young ladies a photograph of themselves. His poems on such occasions were full of verve and naughty, casual joy. Appropriating a term which Tang Xuanzong, a famous eighth-century emperor, had used for his favorite consort, Binchun told us that Bowra’s sister, Anna, was a multilingual “talking flower” (jieyuhua). Bright and clever, she “loved Chinese the best of all languages.” Another female guest at the same party was “a rare beauty.” She made flowers into a hairpin for herself, and followed Binchun everywhere like a fluttering butterfly. Still a third female guest had “a smile echoing springtime.” Delighted to be in Binchun’s company, she volunteered to take off her wedding ring to show it to him. He had been told that Europeans considered taking off their wedding rings as inauspicious, so he praised her for the intelligence she demonstrated in refusing to accept such superstitious ideas.

  • @lanceblankenship9995
    @lanceblankenship9995 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    A common trope in mid-nineteenth-century Qing sources about European societies was an inversion of the patriarchal order upheld in the Confucian tradition. The facts can be found in Xu Jiyu’s Yinghuan zhilüe, laid out in a pithy, easily comprehensible statement: “men constantly obey women - it is true throughout the entire country.” Wang Tao, a translator and journalist who visited Britain himself in the 1860s, even went so far as to construct Western states in his fiction as the legendary “Kingdoms of Women." These impressions were immediately confirmed by members of 1866 mission to Europe. Binchun wrote sympathetically that European husbands served their wives “like a maid or a concubine” on a daily basis. Zhang Deyi related what he was told by a Westerner on a steamship: “Foreigners constantly debased men while exalting women. Husbands were subservient to their wives, not daring to leave them an inch. In child rearing too, men tended to everything like a wet nurse.” It eluded the Qing travelers in the 1860s that the appearance of women in elite society was relatively recent in Europe, and it by no means meant the subversion of male dominance in politics or the family. But it's still surprising the degree to which Binchun tilted his representation of European society to emphasize his socialization with women. Of the forty-nine sets of poems he composed in Europe, seventeen were for women or womanly things. Some of these were dedicated to women of royal houses and wives of high officials and local notables; others were written for dancers, singers, and actresses whom he saw in theaters. The effect was a thoroughly effeminized Western society.

    Did you ever play Bioshock Infinite? (Spoilers ahead 😅) within the DLC Burial at Sea the main character has psychic powers and see’s the future of her death across many timelines and realizes no matter what she does, she will not escape the horrific death fate has in store for her…she also wont be able to change almost anything regardless of her actions….( I absolutely hated this ending it felt like a betrayal of the audience) the character however realizes that she CAN impact the outcome for a certain someone else, down the line which will change THEIR life in a meaningful way and decides to give everything she’s got left to make that happen. Hearing your words now reminded me of that and I’m pretty sure it’s the perspective the creator had in mind. Chilling.

If I had known about Terry Pratchet when my kids were reading Harry Potter, I would have thrown out all my kids Harry Potter books and replaced them with Terry Pratchet books. Each holiday season, I make a point of watching the movie, The Hog Father.

      From what I learned about Terry Pratchett from Shaun, he is a solid author, I should read him.

      @@PeaceLaborMay Pratchett walks an interesting line between justifying Victorian capitalism and pointing out its absurdities. On a different note, the last five minutes of The Hog Father make me jump out of my seat and scream. "Ahh Haa!" Also, a fun fact, Steven King's IT is implied to exist in or originate from Disc World, according to a utube video I once saw.

    I'm one of those robots who keep telling people how they can be physically healthy. Take vitamin D and zinc, and when you are sick, take fresh ginger root tea.
