There was a Warren Beatty movie called, "Reds", based on this story. The book's better, but the movie isn't trash.

The Gilded Age of the 1900's that Reed experienced in the US parallels today, and the exploitation the proletariat faced in Russia pre-1917.
The rule of capitalism is to 'Pursue wealth and prosperity.' The real rule is that, 'You're supposed to be dedicated to MY wealth and MY prosperity. Your function in life is to make me richer, and that's called me civilizing you, and if you're not devoted to MY prosperity you're problematic.'
In the end capitalism leaves no growth for community, economy, culture or society. It cannibalizes itself for the sake of the individual. Self destructive.
You'd really like the movie Reds. Jack Nicolson's character is a real bastard.
