Very interesting. I had a hard time understanding this concept when you first brought it up. I do observe an almost unconscious set of behaviors and values in US society. The media's main purpose seens to be indoctrination but also the virtual production and life style selling. It's clear to me in society the media, arts and leaisure all contribute significantly to the development of society and cannot be entirely separated from the economy. Its also appears that within a large enough society new societies with their own values are born but limited which almost seem to be a strange after effect of this virtual production; yet the development of the society is limited due to capitalism and its dominating ideology. As an example, we all seem to think socialism and communism should lead to pockets of extremely culturally complex communities. Do we not have fragments of this in capitalism already? I think important work is to be done in regards to the unconscious production and activity of the masses. Its clear humans and individuals unconsciously produce things they use and benefit from. Reading foucault and gramsci has revealed a lot of how the production of culture through media is part of how the superstructure is maintained.
