      I know, it is hard when you have raised him and get attached. You definitely don't want to keep him around if he is doing to harm you or your mom or company. I haven't worked with leghorns because they ten to be more active and hyper. I'm sorry you are experiencing this. Its horrible and I feel for you. I would honestly, in the future, look up chicken breeds that are docile and breeds that the roosters tend to be more docile. Sometimes what happens with roosters is they are fine up until they reach maturity and once they become "roosters" their true character comes out. I tend to not get attached to our roosters until I see what they are like as adults and how they interact with the hens before deciding which ones to keep. Maybe make a post on a social media to see if someone closer would want a rooster.

    • @PloughmansBackyard
      @PloughmansBackyard 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't find it noisy at all, when the eggs turn it is at times. Humidity isn't too bad during the 18 days I add a bit of warm water every 3 days. You can remove the mat for the 18 days too to help keep humidity up but need to put it back in on day 18 until hatch. I did find the first round 18-21 days were more difficult to keep humidity high, I think the water troughs could be a little larger to add more water. But we were happy with our hatch. I'm doing my second hatch now. 9 days left. So we will see how this one goes too for more experience. It is one of the better incubators I've used, but I've only used 3 other kinds before this one. I hope this helps.

    • @cutterbacon
      @cutterbacon 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PloughmansBackyard Appreciated thank you and all the very best with your incubation. I was running a petting zoo before and sales etc i was using a large scale incubator, i once gathered up all the very olde quail eggs laying around the farm and ended up with 3 massive trays full of old eggs so simply put them all in the incubator to see what happened 🤠

    • @PloughmansBackyard
      @PloughmansBackyard 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @cutterbacon so I just complete our next hatch and the humidity seemed to be reading exactly what the instructions said, however both times now we have had to assist more chicks out of the shells that have hatched on there own. It seems to be no issue getting the chicks to this point but both hatches had dry membranes which I would say is a humidity issue. I am thinking the humidity needs to be higher than the instructions tell us. It is good to see this is was not just misuse of the first hatches but it seems consistent. I have contacted chickcozy and am waiting to hear back from them on this issue. I like the style, the lay out, keeps heat and humidity levels well but the water trough is not large enough to add more water to increase humidity past 65%. My other incubators we have had humidity levels around 75% with no hatching issues. I believe if this incubators water trough was larger it would really help with the hatching and increasing humidity levels. I hope this helps.

    • @cutterbacon
      @cutterbacon 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PloughmansBackyard I used a very large expensive incubator on the farm and that even started to cause me issues with humidity and sticky eggs, i lost a few expensive peacocks due to this issue and im not sure what was wrong as the water trays held a lot of water. If thats the case here then the company will have to redesign the incubator to around 75% as you say. Stange indeed. Brinsea is the way i believe.

    Great video. I've got one thing to add: adding something with natural saponins to your water will work wonders for the first watering of hydrophobic soil by lowering surface tension of water. Aloe vera is the most easy to obtain choice (fresh in a blender, about 1 oz per gallon of water) or powdered (about 1 tsp per gallon, depending on the product). Yucca liquid extract is also a good source of saponins although a bit harder to find than aloe. Quillaja saponaria is even better and will make your water melt into even the most stubborn hydrophobic soil, although this one is harder to find locally and you'll probably have to order it online. Quillaja is the water god of gardening though, once you try it you'll want to keep a bag of it around all the time. In all cases make sure to get products designed for horticultural use.

    Thanks for this! That’s an impressive tiller! My garden is definitely mini tiller sized! I have been using a mini tiller with a Tecumseh engine for twenty years or more. If it ever dies I would probably get a Mantis.

      Yes we really liked the mantis, it just wasn't the right fit for our garden size. This has proved to be the best option for us and are very happy with it.

    What would we do without Canadian Tire? Glad to see you are out in the Garden.

    We ended up using a headlamp because we bought chicks kinda on a whim and the heat plate would have taken to long to get here, so I picked up a heat lamp at a local farm store. I'm with you I was scared to leave my house with it on, and it was a huge drain on our off-grid solar power. Next time I would definitely prefer a heat plate, but I have heard a horror story which got me scared, that it got too hot and burned the tops of the chicks heads. What's your thoughts, is this really a worry and what could I do to make sure it didn't happen? One important thing to note is if chicks are shipped they may need additional heat of a heat lamp for the first day or so, as they are colder and more stressed than local chicks, and if they only get access to a heat plate they may stay under there to try to warm up and not go out and eat. I know this doesn't apply to you or I, but I thought it's good to mention as some people do order chicks that are shipped for days.

    I'm wondering what the yield is today. My own experience tells me she must be filling a couple 5 gallon buckets with nuts today. It's amazing how fast these start growing once well established. Of course squirrels will take their quota...

      We don't harvest these until fall, we had a good amount last fall. The bushes are getting huge, since this video.
