The grind to the 1% [GT3 iRacing] PART 5
Hey guys, I'm still here and I aint leaving! I've managed to be REALLY close to my goal lap which was done by a pro sim racer.
During the weeks that I was practicing, I started feeling tired so I decided to take it easy for a few weeks and come back stronger after I had refueled my mental batteries.
We're really close now! I'm going to keep pushing and break some records!!

    Great series and I´ve enjoyed every episode so far. Super easy to plateau when you are only racing yourself, and on the same track all the time. It probably would not hurt you to do some races occasionally. That is why most of us are on iracing anyways. But I get why you are doing this and am curious to see the results. Keep on pushing mate

    Good to see someone really driving to improve! But please, stop wasting your time on BB settings. Yes, there is a little bit in it but 99% of driving faster is in technique and you won't find real laptime in BB. More than 1 or 2 clicks forwards, backwards is all you have to try really. A really big thing in Iracing is making sure you don't have a brake and throttle input at the same time. In your telemetry I see you still have a crossover point. So lift a little earlier and start braking when your throttle input is a 0. Won't change a whole lot when you do a single lap but it keeps your tires alive in a race. It makes a massive difference! Again, good to see you practice a lot but don't forget to race. That is where you really improve! It is funny that I always get the same question at the end of a fixed race: What is your brake bias. And I have to tell them, whatever is stock, is what I use haha

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, I'm not expecting miracles with the BB at this stage...and you've got a good point with the crossover between my braking and throttle inputs. I will try to work on that. Thanks!!!

    Have you thought about changing BB during the lap? Downhill into T5 you'll need more front BB, uphill like T3 you can go rearward on BB and have more rotation. It's also a great skill to learn if you can change settings effortlessly. It will help you if you ever want to race prototypes with enrgy and fuel management. Another point is that you can dynamicly alter BB with your downshifts. The faster and earlier you downshift the more enginebraking will help the rearwheels under braking. So you could expiriment with slower downshifting into T5 and faster into T13. Good luck, I love the idea of the series. Improving methodically is a good path. Once you discover the way to improving in one skill, you'll find that you can use it with almost every other thing you want to learn.

      I appreciate the advice!! Yes, changing BB during the lap is on my list of things that I want to try out soon! I just want to firstly see how much BB (front & rear, respectively) is too much. I also agree with what you said about the way to improve on a skill! I'm hoping that if I have a good basis in proper driving techniques, then I can learn the rest of the tracks quicker and easier. Only time will tell!!

    Good stuff, great effort! I would recommend you should still pay attention to the track state, generate will not give you a stable track state to begin with and you will have different amounts of rubber on the racing line (0-100% / clean -> maximum usage).

    Hey man, great video! Its good to see your progress. Couple of things I wanna point out is that the BB shouldnt affect the tire tempts too much, if you are not locking up / engaging abs. If I were you I'd be more focused on what BB makes me feel comfortable for a race stint, BUT, and there is a really important but I dont know if you know this but tire temps and especially their increase is very very different in a test drive then in a race or even a public practice. When I was running the ferrari 296 in algarve earlier this season I was baffled how my tire temps were through the roof after 3-4 laps, because I was practicing for the race before the week started, since it was my first D class race aswell. But once I jumped into a race the tire temps felt a lot more controlled and easier to manage. Ofc iRacing in general is very unforgiving in the tires department but keep that in mind. Also I wouldnt compare myself to other that much other then getting a benchmark of where the faster guys are. I did this for a long time in various sims but in the end its just gonna burn you out, instead keep your laptimes in mind and focus on the gains you made. But of course only when you feel comfortable in the car. And also my ffb is also peaking in the high downforce cars. I have a g920 and I main the porsche cup right now and the peaking is really low since its not a particularly high downforce car, however once I jump into a gt3 car its start peaking very much. I am not affected by this a ton, and it doesnt bother me. I know its not ideal, but I'd rather have it like this then feel like a gt3 is a porsche cup based on the ffb. And its just nitpicking at this point but I would explore different camera settings, black box positioning and overlays. I found that I am more consistent with a lower FOV and with the pedal controls visible near the center of my screen. But I know that its only preference and that everybody is different its just what helped me. And lastly there are various great videos on car control that really helped me before I even started iRacing. In my experience Danny Lee's videos coached me through many hours put into sim racing and they helped me a ton. But you said that you are only experimenting with settings / in car controlls and its a great thing to do honestly. I really wish you good luck with your jurney! (sry for the reddit thread sized comment I just cant stop once I start to type out something)

      Thanks for your input dude!! I didn’t know about the tire temps changing between a race and a practice session. Are you sure the weather or the track rubber wasn’t different? Good to know regardless! As for the BB changes, I just want to try and see what happens. I’m not expecting any massive drops in lap time. At this point I’m just looking for 3.5 tenths…maybe with a BB change I can find at least 1 or 2 from the ENTIRE lap😅…(I hope so) I also get what you mean with burning out. @Achillefsgiannisis Yes conditions were the same. Also the tracks grip is different from a solo to an online session. I am not sure why is that the case, but I only practice in realistic weather conditions, and its the same with the pcup car for example. Temps, humidity, setup, tire compound are all the same. Tires are weird but we should be getting the v10 soon if im correct so looking forward to that.

      @@Achillefsgiannisis I'm quite similar to your pace, about 5-7 tenths off the top level. I've done a lot of league racing with fixed setups, and I've noticed that the online hosted race sessions have more grip than my solo practice. 2:01 i'm not sure what you mean, but just in case, im going to warn you that bb only changes how the car behaves under braking, it has no effect on its handling whatsoever while youre using the throttle

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could be right. I am not 100% certain about the BB changes but here's my theory. More rear BB means more oversteer. More oversteer means more scrubbing of the rear tires. More scrubbing of the rear tires produces more heat (on the rear tires). So if this is the case, then reducing the rear BB would do the opposite and move some of that "scrubbing" and heat to the front. So basically, I am trying to manage my tire temps through BB, in order to reduce the tires from overheating. And with that, if the tire temps of my rear tires are "low" during braking, then I can push them more, with the throttle, during acceleration. I could be wrong though, so feel free to correct me!!

      I should do a video going over my entire setup. But in a nutshell, I'm currently working with the Fanatec CSL Pedals (With the extra Load cell Brake pedal) & the Fanatec CSL DD Wheelbase (8NM). NOTE: The Load cell pedal was too stiff and I didn't feel like it captured the feeling you would get from a real car (at least not the ones I have tested)...so I did a modification to make the pedal just a little bit softer. Now it has a bit more travel. I didn't lose or gain any lap time from this modification. I solely did it to make it feel more realistic!!

      @Achillefsgiannisis Thank you, I get what you mean. I've got the Fanatec Clubsport pedals and put in the stiffest brake kit add-on. Now it feels very close to an open wheel car, but it becomes a literal pain in GT or road cars where you need to max the pedal for extended periods.

    Just hire a coach for 1 hour and you'll learn more of your driving mistakes than if you were to continue doing 1,000 laps every day alone. Sometimes it takes a second person looking at your driving to notice things. Even Max Verstappen has a coach. Also, practice on other cars. It will make you faster on all cars. Go back to the mx5 every now and then too because it will make holes in your fundamental skills more apparent.

      The conditions won’t change that much with the new weather generator. You have a odd session in there once in a while. But for sure if you practice like this you need static weather to really have a consistent base to improve. Also don’t forget that the tires the first few laps will have peak performance. I would say just driving won’t really improve much unless you also start looking at your own laps and see if you can improve. Look at the chase cam to see your linens and then also look at your brake trace.

    Hi Achillefs, always cool to see fellow iRacers on their journey and see them improve. I've analyzed your miracle lap and there is still time to be found. - Exit of T1, you put the left side of the car on the curb. You can take a lot more curb here increasing your radius. Bigger radius means being able to take more speed through the corner and on exit. - You lift going up the hill in T3. You can do this flat out and go a little bit more over the curb giving you more exit speed onto the straight. - After the hairpin you short shift into second losing you time (delta goes from -0.10 to -0.05 and keeps falling). After you've clipped your apex you can just accelerate out and take a little bit more exit curb if you need to. - Going up the hill you keep on the inside of the exit curb. You can almost completely position your car here, putting your right wheels on the exit curb without getting an off track. Bigger radius = more speed on apex and exit. - After the hill going down you place your car on the right curb. You don’t have to do this, the corner is easy flat from the middle. Increasing the radius here without taking advantage of the speed this gives means extra meters without extra pace. This means you lose time here. - After the long right hander you can position the car with the right wheels on the red exit curb. Bigger radius...well you get the point by now - After the downhill hairpin you position your car on the exit curb. Use this reference for the above where I mention you can take a bigger radius. Getting as good or better as Max Verstappen does not mean you have to do 1000 laps. It means you have to make every lap count. Be critical of yourself, watch your laps from multiple camera views. Check where you leave track space on the table (most time can be found here) then focus on technique. Suellio Almeida has made a complete course just to check where you can find extra time in certain phases of your driving skills development. I would highly recommend it if you want to make your laps count. Furthermore, look into tools like garage61 with which you can compare your telemetry with 1000 of other iRacers from all different skill categories. See where you can brake later etc. Hope to see you on track, preferably in my rear view mirrors ;)

      Wow. You are awesome! Thanks for all your tips dude!! I immediately went to the sim to try them out! I tried not to lift on T3 and it’s REALLY tricky, but is actually possible..! I will work on that for sure. As for the kerbs, I will try and open up my line as much as possible. However, some curbs (like on the exit of the uphill right-hand turn) are really bumpy and slippery, so I intentionally avoid them. Sometimes I do use these kerbs but very rarely would see any drop in lap time (if anything it might be slowing me down…). I will try and see maybe I am approaching the kerbs wrong….maybe… You’re also right about reducing the meters when going downhill on the (easy flat) left turn. My thought process was to open up my line to not kill any speed. But it seems like I gain more time by just using a shorter line!! I will do my best to try and correct my mistakes and I’m looking forward to encountering you online soon (Let’s see how long you can keep me behind you😝).

But if the grip starts to fade away as you're exiting the corner (or maybe you don't have grip for the next corner), then you've probably overdone it, you'll lose time and have a more unstable car. At that point, it might be a good time for you to test and see what happens if you take it easier next time around! That's just my opinion though. Keep pushing!

      @alecmillea4539 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Achillefsgiannisis Of course what I said is an oversimplification. Different tires have different optimal slip angles. Generally speaking the more tread a tire has and the more sidewall flex the tire has, the more slip angle will be needed to achieve the maximum coefficient of friction. "Not sliding the car so much that countersteer past the center point is necessary", is a general rule that can be reletively easily monitored and understood while driving to ensure that time is not being lost by "drifting too much." Your point regarding tire temperature is very valid. Having the car sliding a lot of the time will overheat the tires. In order to prevent overheating it's important to minimize the oversteer as much as possible. The aim is to have just enough oversteer to be able to unwind the steering ever so slightly. I'm talking about 10° less steering lock that's it.

  • @TheStobe84

    It was a flow state. I've had laps like this sometimes. Suddenly you just read the car perfectly and everything you do just goes perfectly every corner. You know beforehand what the car is going to do and you don't do any unnecessary inputs. I had this in league race weekend's qualifying in Interlagos. Was 7th out of over 30 drivers. I lost the pole by 5-7,5 tenths I think. Doesn't sound that impressive but mostly people are 1-1,5 seconds away from the aliens.

      I'll have to disagree with you on this one. BB makes a HUGE difference on car behavior. I can definitely feel the handling of the car change, based on how much negative or positive BB I put. But my "problem" is that (at this point) I don't know how to utilize it to it's fullest potential. In regards to other setup changes, the same is true. If I don't drive properly, my lap time will never improve. I have done countless laps even before starting this series and have noticed the same pattern. This is just my opinion based on my experiences though. Feel free to disagree. There are no hard feelings ;) By the way, I can't make any other changes in the setup (even if I wanted to). I'm using the EXACT same setup that a PRO sim racer is using, when I accidently joined the same server as him (it was a fixed setup series). So, if I want to be fair and reach his lap time, I need to stay true to the challenge setup. I can only change the BB.

    What you said about stressing the tyres is right, I think drivers like max get around this with a really loose rear to get good rotation and then they master the rear wheel slip around corners, so they are just on a feathers edge of grip Looking at your onboard here, I don’t know for sure because I can’t feel what you feel, but it almost feels like you have too much grip, I think you should practice with as little rear df as possible and practice chucking the car into corners and slipping a bit more Easier said than done ofc, but if you watch Verstappen on board you can feel him doing this to perfection

    • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Based on my experience so far, I've noticed that it is really easy to get caught on the idea of getting more rotation out of the car and forgetting to have the right balance of stability (so you don't overheat the rear tires). After posting this video, I actually increased my brake bias (less rotation) and that helped me get less heat on the rears. Even though I have lost a bit of rotation, I was able to make up more time by getting a better acceleration (less wheel spin) on my exits. Currently, I am using the default "challenge" setup and I don't want to make any changes on it, because I am basing my GOAL LAP from a well established sim racer who was able to do a 1:42.7 with the "challenge setup". If I make any changes on that setup, then it wouldn't be fair to compare my lap time to theirs!! Now I am 3 tenths away from my goal, so I'm hoping that I am on the right path...but believe me when I say that I am constantly doubting if my current brake bias is the correct one. You might be right and I need to make the rear more loose (AGAIN)...only time will tell. I really appreciate the advice and will definitely try something out, inevitably!!

    Just a quick update. I am kicking myself. What I said in the end of this video about stressing the tires was correct. This is really funny to me, but as soon as I increased my brake bias towards the front, again, I was LITERALLY 3tenths quicker. I’m learning…slowly but surely. More on that on part 3🚀.

      @Achillefsgiannisis 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s funny you ask because I am currently facing this exact issue and will address it in my next video! The best way I’ve found to deal with such a “slump” is to: 1) Take a break and not practice for a day or two (it resets my mind a bit). 2) Not over push myself to do more laps if I see that I’m getting tired. 3) Analyze my laps and other’s (faster drivers) to see what they are doing differently. 4) Change my driving style. For example, I would change my brake bias, or brake earlier, or steer sooner, etc. (Just be careful because if you change your driving too frequently, you never really learn anything, because you aren’t giving yourself the necessary time to adapt to the change.) But one thing to always keep in mind is that the goal and the reason why we started simracing and/ or IRL racing, is to have fun. Take a break and relax!! There will be “bad” training days but don’t let those drag you down too much. It’s part of the process and you will be back on your feet sooner or later!!🚀🚀

    Any temperatures we can shoot for in iracing for GT3's? I've always known I overdrive the car and overheat the tires, but I don't know exactly how not to and how to identify that I have. • @Achillefsgiannisis
      @Achillefsgiannisis 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From my own research, the tire temp window is between 80c - 100c. Seeing live temps would definitely be helpful, but you can always check to see if you are understeering or oversteering, while you're driving. And if you are, you have overheated tires! And this goes down to the micro level. If you are SLIGHTLY understeering, you have SLIGHTLY overheated fronts. If you are SLIGHTLY oversteering, then you have SLIGHTLY overheated rears.
