Star Trek Section 31 VERSUS Babylon 5—Rehabilitating BAD GUYS
Star Trek Discovery rehabilitated Emperor Georgiou, the most evil person in two universes, and even gave her a position in Section 31. Things didn't go nearly as well for Death Walker on Babylon 5. In this video we compare both characters' story arcs.

"Deathwalker" was one of the best episodes of Babylon 5. The actress who played Jha'dur was awesome. Judging by the few outtakes in this, it seems Yeoh is dreadful as the empress, I never realized she was such a lousy actress. But I digress. The thing is, that in Babylon 5, despite knowing of her "crimes against sentience", several governments wanted to work with Jha'dur. She had reached an agreement with the Earth Alliance government (which later became one of the show's main antagonists) before the Vorlons killed her to avoid that. Yet throughout the episode, we got a really good idea about the depths of the evilness of Jha'dur's crimes and the episode was a really intense lesson on how the unscrupulous try do make use of people who do evil, full knowing how evil they are. Thanks for this comparison. It's shocking how the perception and portrayal of evil has shifted over the years.

There's a bit of cringy gender politics at play here. Not just with Georgio being rehabilitated, but with other characters like Agnes and Seven both committing murders and the show just sweeping it under the proverbial rug. The message: Killers can be sympathetic characters if they are FEMALE. No redemption arcs for male murderers and bad guys, they are treated accordingly. Georgio is the equivalent of Hitler, when you look at her deeds. But the crew of Discovery hugged her and told her they miss her. Think about that.

Having complained a lot about basically the rest of this season, I have to say this episode was at least okay. Like you said a good balance of funny and serious moments. It did make me laugh out loud a few times, such as when Gordon told LaMarr he was to join the away team. I also thought Claire confronting LaMarr was great and long overdue. Alara's visit was a bit disappointing, in Season 1 she had been my favorite character. It's a good episode to end the show with, at least for me. "Amanda, I'm coming!" 🙄🙄🙄 This episode was pathetic in all the meanings this word has. This may be a "good episode" for some kind of lame piu-piu Star Wars imitation, complete with trench run, not more. This episode clearly shows that The Orville is NOT in the spirit of classic Star Trek as people constantly claim. I can't understand, why you make excuses for this weak show when it is clearly just written badly. As before, nothing is explained. The deus ex machine style weapon of mass destruction just comes out of nowhere. They could have at least mentioned it under development in a previous episode. (or was this even developed after Burke and Isaac made peace two episodes before?????). Again, the Orville is at the center of intergalactic policy - I guess the reasoning is that it has a specific meaning for the Kaylons after what happened in Season 2. The Union just goes to force the Kaylon into peace talks by using a weapon of mass destruction and threatening the Kaylon with extinction? Just how naive and clueless are those writers? This is basically the same as the planet killer bomb used on Kronos in Star Trek Disgracery. And then the Chancellor of a huge intergalactic nation personally goes out to beat up the invaders in a military installation. In what world do those writers live? The Orville as a show does not work at this point. They classify it as a parody to show that it can't be taken seriously, but then it isn't funny any more. Classifying your show as a parody to get away with bad writing does not work. Bad writing will always be bad writing. This is fanfic level. And one more thing: The visuals were also horrible: The fake photoshoppy colours, the fake sunrise and fake Aurora Borealis. The insect swarm space battles. 🙄 I'd prefer STTOS or even Star Trek Continues over this trash anytime. my eyes are tired from rolling...

I can't disagree more on this episode. I think you have lowered your standards because you have watched too much New Trek. Everything I have a problem with in The Orville was too evident here: -completely incompetent (actually foolish, reckless and hapless) personnel that keep getting away with screwing up - horrible, gratuitous violence - constant current day references - writing where things happen not because they make sense but only so the plot can move along. The story itself wasn't all bad and I kind of liked Klyden's return, but that was it. So you are praising the special effects and how the shooting scene was well done and even sign of on the scene where Bortus puts out the interrogators eye? I already hated the fighting in The Orville's First Contact episode and this was equally bad. Please stop comparing this to Star Trek. TOS had crappy special effects, and it was good nonetheless. The eye putting out to me seems on par with the same happening to Icheb in Star Trek Picard. I just get so annoyed with The Orville crew as Union Officers randomly lying, cheating, breaking rules and above all making reckless decisions and not only getting away with it, but being treated by the admiralty as some kind of elite, when the Orville is really just a mid-level ship. The whole show concept has totally failed. The Enterprise was the flagship, but the Orville which is just another mid-level ship gets treated like the flagship and put on high-importance missions. It is not believable at all. And yes, Mercer and Grayson did get scolded one time by the body-positive admiral, but there never were any consequences. How can the Union leave decisions that affect interstellar politics to an unexperienced mid-level starship captain? Even invite him and his pilot to high level meetings? The violence is deplorable. At least until DS9, using force was never a method of choice in Star Trek. And even when violence was shown, it was never so explicit. I really don't get how you can make videos about Discovery''s crew being war criminals (I have never watched that show and will never) and then think what The Orville is doing in terms of violence is acceptable or even good. I feel you are having conflicting standards on this, and I was really shocked you ACTUALLY LIKED the most violent scene in this show!!!!! And Dolly Parton, OMG. As someone who is not a U.S. citizen, I am mildly aware who Parton is, but I have no idea, what she stands for. For any international audience, what has been done with her can not be understood. There was never any explanation why Heveena took a liking to Parton. So Mercer taught a Krill about Billy Joel and a Moclan Female about Dolly Parton. Why do U.S. American shows always assume that everything will be in the future like it is in current day U.S.A?. Old Star Trek or even Firefly at least tried to balance this, but in the Orville everything (not even the references only) is like current day U.S.A.: The swearing, the society, the school, family life including alien family live. This is so bad. Finally, so much does not make sense. Things just happen, there is never any explanation, no foreshadowing no nothing. I seriously do not understand how the Orville and especially this episode is good writing. There is also nothing innovative here. We have seen a torture scene like the one in this episode a hundred times before. To me, this episode was weak and it made me angry. You say that one should show this episode to people who don't know the show to see how good it is. I wish someone would have shown me this episode before I knew the Orville, then I wouldn't have wasted money on season 3. I will bear the final two episodes of this season only because I have already paid for them. After that I am done with The Orville. I hope that Season 4 will never happen, the show does not deserve another season after this one. And if it happens I will not watch it or pay money to see it no matter who says how good it is.

Did The Orville have problems? Yes, absolutely, and I also think you've figured out why a lot of this show doesn't work for you. It is very US-centric. And there is A LOT of allegory that people who aren't from the US won't understand. For instance, we don't think the future is going to be like the current USA, but we use this atmosphere for a specific reason. We have a long tradition (including TOS) of using science fiction and allegory in order to address current social ills. This was often done in order to get around the censors who determined what was allowed to be shown on US television. We couldn't discuss a lot of topics head-on, but we could still get the stories told if we gave the planet a different name and called the people something else. Is there also a lot of nonsense and stupid, illogical behavior in The Orville? Yes, and for the exact same reason. Humor was also often employed in order to get around the censors. Seth MacFarlane comes from a generation that uses a lot of sarcasm when dealing with serious situations, and that is very evident in The Orville. Fortunately, a lot of the people doing the 'cancelling' right now don't understand allegory or sarcasm. This can make for some fairly annoying and stupid characters and plots, but the intent is to get the message across in a way that gives enough deniability to not get banned, censored, or cancelled. I'm sorry this very American narrative-style doesn't work for you. I'll have to remember that caveat when recommending shows in the future. -Mollie

    • @chrisstahl2653
      @chrisstahl2653 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@mollieandtheoldman I enjoyed humor when The Orville had it. That was when the show worked for me. Sarcasm I didn't find any, and if there had been, I would have liked that as well. As for allegories or analogies, there is nothing wrong with doing that, classic Star Trek did it all the time, but it should at least be done in a clever way. Teleya as a trumpesque character and stand in for evangelical Christians in the U.S. was way too obvious. An example for a bad such allegory in 90s Star Trek were the Kazons, one of the most clever ones were the Borg before Voyager. I think The Orville could work so much better if it would take itself less serious. It's the humor that worked well for me, while they totally failed at doing serious classic Star Trek style content this season. It all could have been so much better. The whole thing with the Krill being afraid of the sun was brilliant, there were a few other brilliant ideas, but they never managed to take them anywhere. This means for me, the show has failed and I have no hope that it will get better in eventual future seasons. The biggest turn off for me is really the senseless unreflected violence. Again and again, violence is used as a feasible means and is presented like some kind of child's play. If this would have been exaggerated in a sarcastic way (like the Moclan Latchkum game), that would have been okay, but it's just kind of portrayed as normal. For me this is totally unacceptable and why I will not watch eventual future seasons.

I wish they would have concentrated on the Kaylon story arc for this, although it was basically a rehash of the story from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. How they show the creators of the Kaylons in basically some kind of U.S. Suburbia family setting was really ridiculous and another example for how The Orville constantly references current day. The Jenisi story was just super-annoying. Why do "Matriarchal" societies always have to be portrayed in a way that the women basically behave like men and the men are oppressed. Can't they look at some actual matriarchal societies before they write such crap? This was STTNG "Angel One" level. As to the romance stories. The John/Talla romance has been annoying me since the beginning, coming out of nowhere and having no ground or explanation at all. I don't mind them have a romance, but there is no explanation whatsoever why they have been attracted to each other (or am I too stupid and didn't notice) before they suddenly started kissing in the engine room. And there still isn't, just them saying it's so special, but no explanation. As to the Claire/Isaac story. I didn't mind it, and I thought it was nice how it tied into the Kaylon story, with Isaac gaining and then losing his emotions. It was kind of moving and a classic moral dilemma with Claire needing to choose between Isaac's heart or soul. Yet I do agree that it's getting way to soap-opera-like. At this point I jutst want to get through the last several episodes and be done with it. One more thing: Watching Old Trek, I often thought, episodes could be longer, but seeing these extended episodes of The Orville, I find that it did not make them better at all. The classic 45 min format was actually pretty good for a focused story.

"The audience they have cultivated...they are expecting the crap they are putting out now." I think that's becoming increasingly true as this era of the franchise goes on. Here's the thing. The Trek we grew up with appealed to us as kids, but the scripts had enough substance that we can still watch those shows as adults and find things to enjoy in them. My appreciation for "classic Trek" has changed as I have gotten older, but I enjoy some episodes even more now than I did back in the day...having a bit more "on the odometer" has given me a perspective on them that I didn't have as a younger viewer. The shows they are putting out now are the live action equivalent of saturday morning cartoons. Do you think the young teens who are watching them are still going to be watching them in 40 years time, or even 60 years time, like we do with TOS and TNG? I really doubt it, because with the odd rare exception, the fundamental nature of these shows is emotionally and morally immature.

10:52 “… kids are getting their moral compass from movies and television.“ I do not agree, for the most part. When I was young, I watched TOS and many other shows, but I only remember TOS. (Well, Rocky and Bullwinkle too.) I was entertained by many other shows that had different values, but I have forgotten them, almost completely - - ultimately I rejected their ethical systems. I also rejected the values of my parents, and their church. So where did my values come from? Honestly, I think they came from inside myself. And, honestly, I think the same is true for most people. I agree that there can be influences on our moral development, but we actually pick and choose from among those influences: that is, we choose those values that we are already innately comfortable with. I also agree with you that shows should have the social responsibility to portray the difference between right and wrong. That makes the world a better place. Moreover, I feel that people enjoy those stories: people are happy to learn how a wise story-teller would resolve a moral dilemma. Cheers, Dandelion Down

I do agree with that view about how a person forms their own moral compass. But I'd also add that is shaped by embracing some things seen and rejecting others. Back when you were in your formative years I'd guess that you had a better choices to select from to embrace or discard. What seems to be offered uniformly across tv and movies now seems to push one/limited view on things. It's similar (if not outright) propaganda that is being pushed in 2024. Of course, offering older shows to that younger population would be my answer. But young people want new shiny stuff -- Old Man

29:20 “… and if they make fun of them, I don’t care, I just want it on the screen.” Picard Season 3 is an example of that. I read hundreds of comments from people who justified the atrocity that was STP Season 3 by saying, “It was just great to see the old gang together again.” The fans of STP Season 3 didn’t care that all of the “old gang” were humiliated and abused throughout the season. 39:23 “… they don’t care how they subvert the franchise, they just want to see the cash roll in.” Sad, but true. 46:15 “… I hope this era … will come to an end.” It will. I have said this many times: that which is rotten (like New Trek) decays and dies; that which is healthy (like Old Trek) lives, and grows, and reproduces. It will take time; but this is nature’s way. 52:19 “… what really matters in this world is the people …” Yes.

The JJ verse movies and Discovey are the Biggest MISSED OPPORTUNITIES in Star Trek history!!!! Think about it Trek 2009 had a brand new timeline! A big budget production! A list celebrities at that time! But what did they do? Fuck up their origin story. When that romulan ship came into that universe it changed history from that point forward. They were unrestricted by existing cannon. Instead they were shoehorning in existing lore and characters and making up stupid situations. The Kobayashi Maru test, How Kirk became captain, Checkov being among the crew when he wasn't even in the first season of TOS, Khan. Discovery too was supposed to be in the prime universe when it didn't need to be. It didn't have to adhere to existing lore. It didn't have to name drop any names of characters and ships. It didn't have to use lcars aound effects. They all could have done their own thing in their own timeline. What a waste!

I saw the trailers, won't bother with Section 31, and the SNW trailer reaffirmed my decision to not bother with season three. Of the two trailers, the SNW trailer was the most insulting and depressing. Edit in: As a 62 year old fan, SNW represented the biggest broken promise. I'm seriously tired of having the TV show that I loved the most being constantly trampled on and mocked. I put up with enough of that in the 70's. Even if someone at CBS/Paramount said they were making original continuity Trek again, I don't know that I could trust them. Star Trek Continues demonstrated it was very possible to make quality Trek, quite a number of the fan productions make better Trek than Secret Hideout. The Avalon Universe Trek episodes have been blowing away anything Secret Hideout does. The fan productions at least know how to tell a good story worth following and understand their source material. My favourite of the low budget fan productions is Starship Antyllus because the story telling is so strong.

One thing that all these products (Section 31, Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks) have in common is that they are making a mockery of classic Star Trek. In my opinion, the only modern Star Trek show that treats the franchise's past respectfully is Prodigy. The series intended for kids is more serious with the subject matter than the shows supposedly aimed at adults.

After Return of the Jedi there was a long break in Star Wars where there were still things being produced (the ewok movies, comics, video games, etc.) but the franchise wasn't running at full speed, as it were. That is, until the Special Editions and then the prequel trilogy. That was one of the best things to happen to Star Wars, in my opinion. Oversaturation with "content" can quickly lead to poor quality and audience burnout.

Sorry, I have to be that guy today. I’m loving the channel and was going back to binge the Picard season 3 reviews which I will continue, but I just have to say that the island was not purgatory on Lost. It’s an island located somewhere on Earth where very unusual things occurred. The characters did not die in any way when the plane crashed. Everything of their story that we saw actually happened. These are the irrefutable facts of the story confirmed by the writers, explained by the characters, and shown on the show. No one is obligated to like the show of course, but “the island is purgatory/ they were dead the whole time” is a meme that has been debunked countless times at this point. Certainly, any criticism of the show simply needs to begin with this being understood about the story. I will say that if they were actually dead the whole time or something along those lines I would think the show was dumb too, but thankfully that is far far from being the case. To me, and for vastly different reasons, both Lost and Star Trek (up to Enterprise) are the most re-watchable tv shows. Lastly, JJ was one of 3 writers on the pilot and he directed the pilot. That’s it for his official involvement in the show. Lindelof even specifically said JJ wanted to introduce uncompleted mystery box ideas in the pilot, to which Lindelof rejected because he only wanted to write in the ideas which they already knew the answers.

Today's productions don't have heroes. They have narcissists. Young people aren't encouraged to find role models in fiction. They are told to look for themselves being represented. Characters aren't celebrated for putting the needs of others ahead of themselves. They make selfish choices and get praised for them.

However, when asked about star trek as a whole, Kirtzman and Goldman gave a reasonable answer as to what ST is supposed to be. It's an interesting contradiction, as they seem to understand what it should be but then turn this trash out. So either they can't make it or they think that is what they are making. Either way it's really concerning and I wish they would stop.

Funny thing about Rick and Morty, it was reflective of Justin Royland’s browsing history hahaa! To be fair to that show at least they created something now that was thematically a parody of another property, Lower Decks isn’t Galaxy Quest it’s trying to be inside not outside joking about something else. They don’t realise that people take shows like Star Trek seriously, but they’re kind of open to parody. What I’m trying to say is the viewers of 90’s Star Trek would not want it to be disrespected when they’ve memorised lore, characters, events, they’re invested in it the same way people are in sport. When sport does something different or pokes fun at itself it never goes well, but making fun of sport on a comedy show sports fans would be more open to it.

I think a lot of us are open to SOME parody. But when a series is based entirely on parody I just don't see why anyone would want to watch it. I suppose it's a matter of how one interprets the intent of the poking fun. Galaxy Quest came off as a love letter to Star Trek. Same with The Orville. That ‘Section 31’ trailer. Back when Bashir, an enhanced human, was being knocked around like a pinball by an organisation without badges, uniforms or even anything identifying. The organisation was good good at hiding itself that us the viewers were open to the idea that Bashir had made it all up like a hollodeck program. It went from that to the suicide squad, not *the* suicide squad of comics Harley Quinn’s suicide squad. Strange New Worlds was always suspicious to me. It felt like a vector to proceed with their stupid Discovery D&D role playing. They started off as an improvement compared to Discovery but it just became the writing room’s D&D again. Which was the plan from the get-go.

Lower Decks is a mockery of Trek, Strange New Worlds is also a mockery of Trek, tonally swinging from Freaky Friday, to ALIENS. Now they make a Star Trek live action comedy... 🤨. The market research is in, apparently young audiences like meta-humor! 💀 The best sci-fi cartoon comedy is still Futurama IMHO.
