  • How can you have a character with an American accent in Bath, England in 1813, and not mention the War of 1812? Ask the writers of Disney Doctor Who because I can't answer that. This was a terrible episode. More time was spent on flirting than on anything else in the story.

As a Brit, we are not taught anything about the war of independence or the war of 1812. We get a brief bit on slavery, suffrage in the UK, industrial revolution, but the main of our history lesions(in my day 90s) was on ww1 & ww2.
We are not taught anything about the British empire outside of it was bad and we are bad. nice thing about being Scottish is we get to say it was all the English fault :D

This...was...awful. How did they entrust these writers to a Doctor Who episode? Looking on IMDB, the only credits either have before this is writing "shorts". Utterly inexcusable. We thoroughly enjoy your analyses, btw - thank you for making it so we didn't have to watch any season 5 Discovery episodes. We appreciate you taking that bullet for us.

I'm a hard history buff. Every time someone plays with history in an inaccurate way, it truly throws suspension of disbelief out the window. Hell, as good as Wonderwoman 2017 was in execution, I KNOW the historical figure of Ludendorff. Misusing that character spoiled it for me. So for RTD to dismiss the War of 1812 in this iteration of Doctor Who, there is really no narrative of merit. It was fan fic. Entirely. It was part of the reason a major historical event was dismissed and forgotten. My Freshman creative writing students could compose a better script. This WAS a stand in for a desired pairing between Jack and the Doctor. And don't get me going on the over-sexualized conduct of the Doctor himself. Totally inappropriate for a family show. And yes, any time 'current day' trends are inserted into a show, the program is immediately dated. It doesn't stand revisiting in the future--except as a lesson on how NOT to write a story.

This episode is basically just a Grindr hookup gone wrong. It's all the bad stereotypes people have of Gay men rolled into something that would be homophobic if it was anyone else doing it. Getting with a guy in 10 minutes? Professing undying love within 20? Then blocking them (in the shadow dimension where they've basically sacrificed themselves for you) after seeing a torso pic you don't like is just all the stereotypes of Gay men as shallow, vain, vacuous and uncaring rolled into one. And abandoning Ruby to the Bird people? To show a guy you just met your.... TARDIS? David Tennant's 10 would not have been that stupid! And I say this as a card carrying homosexual. If Ncuti and Russell were straight and caricaturing Gay men poorly, they'd have been cancelled by now.

Re the brigerton accuracies. This episode felt like... you know those balls people have been having inspired by brigerton? That. Brigerton itself, I'm not a big history buff but I think I know enough to say the shows edwardian period inspired, in the way you might say fairytales are medieval inspired. The concept is used but nothing else. It's bright colours, orchestral modern music, a lot of misunderstanding of what life was like based on what people think life was like rather than historical truth. It's modernised frictional history lol

The timing of this gives me an even bigger question. How are... and also how long does it take... for accents to be created...?
England turned Australia into a prison colony and at some point the Australian accent that we're familiar with was born.
The same with this. Europeans settled in North America and at some point the American accent that we're familiar with happened.
My knowledge of history sucks, but maybe if anyone's an expert on this stuff, they could explain.
On another note, the Doctor's boyfriend says something like "Come find me." but the Doctor completely ignores that plea and moves on.
It's not like he hasn't already crossed a few dimentional barriers in the past, so why would this one present much of a problem...?
    Thanks for the video...! 👍🏻

I think this was in an imaginary Bridgerton universe. See the Willie Wonka reference. I don't watch that show, but I've heard they ignore the homophobia and racism, and their costumes are bad. It was a fanfic: see the writers. Not being able to license The Beatles is real but not an excuse. _Lathe of Heaven_ by PBS was finally released with a cover. It was therefore worse than the original but still highly recommended. Not the Lisa Bonet version, which should be avoided. This episode was a nothing burger. Note also the flashback to what was never aired. It supports my hypothesis that Disney yanked RTD's leash because they didn't like the arc about Gatwa trying to _plook_ Ruby's boyfriend. So most of the episodes already in the can were dumped. I predicted we wouldn't see any of that six months ago, and after everything but the finale, I claim scientific confirmation.

Yeah if you want a show that is a bit more historically accurate with a sci fi twist you are best off watching the original seasons, i'm talking about the 1960s version onwards. They used to do a future/past alternating thing where they would try to add a little bit of teaching and accuracy. It wasnt super accurate but it was a damn sight better than it is today lol.

Sorry it took me longer than usual to get to this review, I’ve had a rotten cold, and trying to cope with a bad cough and! Hearing about Disney Doctor who would be a bit too much.
This one didn’t strike me as too terrible compared to some, at least from the synopses I read. However a few points.
First, to answer the old man’s question, nope, the chaldan have only ever appeared in this episode.
Obviously there’s been a lot of shape shifting aliens in Doctor who over the years, but not these ones.
I’d not claim to be an expert, but as far as I know the war of 1812 really wasn’t much part of everyday life of Britain at that time.
If you read any books written then, Sense and sensibility 1811, or Pride and Prejudice ( written in 1796, though published in 1813), there really isn’t a mention of it.
From other historical stuff I’ve read (Love Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series), you might get a newspapers reporting on various battles; especially against napoleon, and you’d get recruiting sergeants trying to get boys and young men to join the army and go off and fight, but to most people, and especially to the idle rich as scene here, the wars really were something happening elsewhere, so not having it mentioned here isn’t so surprising from a historical perspective.
That being said, I suspect someone with an American accent, though not obviously twigged as American, would be deemed as not the correct social class to enter a ball of this type, and likely get shown the door pretty quickly! :D.
Bath fyi, is a spa and resort town, known for its healing springs, and also as a holiday destination for health cures especially among the idle rich, though seemingly this ball was just generic count snobbington, rather than any specific reference to the place.
What bothers me rather more from a historical basis, is the clear presentism of the narrative here.
We have to have rich people having a go at their servants, we have to have heavy handed commentary about the position of women with generic nasty guy detailing his sexual exploits, and of course we have to talk about how shocking too men dancing is because that so belongs in an 1813 setting.
This is a trend I’ve been really disliking in the Big finish audios recently, the fact that whenever they do the past, it’s not so much an exploration of the past, and more just a reiteration of an oppression narrative.
Yes, obviously the past wasn’t great for women or gay people, but at this point if that’s all you have to say about the past, what’s the point!
Writer Paul Sutton once said the past could be as much a dangerous and alien place as any distant planet, because the rules, the society and the customs there were different.
If however you’re just using it for oppression prawn and pretty visuals, then it’s not really too alien, since these days oppression prawn is pretty much standard.
I’m reminded of the audio story a most excellent match, (part of the collection recorded time and other stories released in 2011).
It begins with Peri, clearly not behaving like Peri, being courted by Mr. Darsey.
It’s then revealed Peri is actually in a pride and prejudice mind scape simulation which has been taken over by an alien.
The alien is attempting to convince Peri to marry it, because then it can take her body since as per the rules of the simulation, IE 19th century law, a woman’s possessions become her husbands upon marriage.
The sixth doctor even tries to propose marriage to Peri to get her out of the situation, albeit she’s bent on marrying alien darsy.
You get cuts between the simulation, and the Doctor and the guy running it trying to fix the problem, here are a lot of classic literature mentions (Heathcliff from wuthering hights shows up at one point), and in the end it’s resolved by having the owner play a long lost distant widow who owns everything!
it managed to both be really fun, to subtly say something about the regency status of women without being in your face about it, and to have some nice moments with the Doctor and Peri; Peri teasing the Doctor rather mercilessly about his flowering marriage proposal, and all of this in a story of only about 25 minutes!
By contrast here Disney who seems to want to throw everything in. We have Dungeons and dragons references, we have a Captain jack wanabe who exists seemingly just to have chemistry with Gatwa.
And the psychic ear rings that have battle mode and can download dancing? Never mind having companions who, mmmm, had to survive on their wits and other skills, or being able to blend in to a past setting.
I’m going to slightly disagree with the old man about references. There’s a really great audio called Scapegoat, where the 8th Doctor takes his companion Lucy Miller to the Moulin rouge.
She talks about wanting to see Ewen Mcgregger; though the Doctor reminds her he didn’t exist :D.
What is hilarious there is it turns out they’re not in 19th century Paris, but 20th century Paris! AT the time of the German occupation!
So there, Lucy Miller’s desire to play out a tv reference was actually an impetus for the story, and even if you’d never seen Moulin Rouge or knew who Ewen MCgregger was, you still had some impetus for the story (plus of course Sheriden Smith’s Lucy Miller is pretty hilarious!).
The problem here seems to be that the Bridgerton reference just exists as a reference, and doesn’t get used, or changed or anything else.
About the romantic tension with the rogue character I really don’t’ care much at all.
I’m not a fan of for one off romances like Madam De pompadour in new who anyway, since I actually preferred when the Doctor was an alien who was mostly above that sort of thing, or at least only developed feelings for someone particularly special, EG Rose after the Time war.
Still as with romance of the week episodes in any series, it all depends upon chemistry.
I suspect given Gatwa’s general overly sexual, exaggerated performance chemistry was rather too exaggerated and rushed, with much more emphasis on being “look! It’s two men flirting! Isn’t the doctor gay, see how he flirts with men!”, but not having seen the episode, I can’t say for certain.
though again, the Disney Doctor caring more about flirting and having a snog than his companion’s safety or literal death sounds pretty standard for this person, and is again why this just doesn’t feel like the Doctor! (the tenth Doctor would’ve been absolutely frantic.
Oh and btw, completely agree, Captain Jack rocks! there are some fantastic appearances for him in the audios, from the continuation of Torchwood, to his own series lives of captain jack.

This season seems to be a reboot for newcomers to the franchise. It’s interesting to note one writer worked on the series ‘Sex Education’ and the other is a comedy writer. It feels like Kate Herron did the A plot of the Doctor flirting with ‘Captain Bridgeton’, while Briony Redman wrote a 'comedic' B plot about shape-shifting bird people. The new series should be rebranded as 'DOCTOR WhO'KE !
I liked the Doctor Who series better when I perceived the Doctor as a non-sexual grandfather type figure; thus, put it in perspective of the depicted age of the character being SO OLD . . . THEN in 1996 the FOX NETWORK made the TV movie and introduced the idea that the Doctor might 'get with' ANY of his(or potential) traveling companies was a change I didn't care for as I prior to 1996 I perceived the doctors traveling companions as-such to being in the equivalent of mentored-grandchildren association. Before seeing the TV series I first seen the 1965 Peter Cushing Doctor Who movie, the Doctor having sexuality implications with traveling companions is just gross to me. It's no longer about telling clever stories that everyone could relate with, now its all about implant sexuality in the flaingboint direction.... how is this even a kids show at this point?
