@@noneed4me2n7 Gene Roddenbury flew a disputed 89 combat missions. A technical failure of his aircraft prevented him from aborting a take off that resulted in the death of an airman. Gene was brought into military service as a second lieutenant and eventually became a Captain...
Basically... Before Star Trek Roddenbury had seen and done alot that allowed him to bring that experience to bear in his show. Classic Trek showed a structural hierarchy that allows large and complex organisations to function that supports the shows verisimilitude... While Nu Trek abhor's hierarchy's unless it's a hierarchy the showrunner and writers personally approve of...
... I say, conscript them into military service for a few years and let them experience what Gene did in WW2. Then maybe they'll have enough experience to write for Trek.

This is related to something I said a couple of weeks ago. I stated that the writers are trying to justify themselves when they make their characters do rotten things but then the characters blame their parents!!! (In my example, I believe that the writers are responding to criticism in their personal and professional lives.)

    Rhys.
Rhys is behind It all. Rhys is the villain, the ultimate villain, whom nobody suspects because he is so quiet and he seems like such a nice guy.
In the final episode, Rhys will take control of the progenitors' technology, and he will use it to destroy STD's dimension, while he escapes to another dimension.

Okay, I am putting this here just to have a record of the guess.
I think the Progenitors' tech is going to be either Spore Drive tech itself (meaning Discovery had the tech the whole time), or some tech the Progenitors used to create or use the Mycellial network.
Culber came back from something having to do with the network and the Spore Drive using the network allows for the jumping around the galaxy that would be useful for the seeding the Progenitors did. So, if they did create or first master the Mycellial network, I would be ok with that as it does make some sense.

They're doing Star Wars because of the exhaust port. And also, they impersonate the Breen, who don't shoot well and are easily knocked out.
But it can't be a serious action episode because it's so stupid. The great Breen appear to have a hole in their shields. It just becomes a minor inconvenience.
The ending was completely absurd. Discovery crashes into the Breen ship? And they beam away just exactly who they should beam and then the other guys get caught in the trash can? And the Breen don't destroy Discovery or beam other people away or shoot everyone?
So it's bad serious action episode and bad action comedy.
Why did Burnham even step into the barrel?

    1.a gangster's female companion

I disagree on the "You cant make leaders". You can learn pretty much anything, the question is how much you are willing to change. Obviously at the point when you get to leadership learning, you have all that baggage you learned before. But there is not much holding you back to change if you are willing, knowing humans don't really like to change.
The problem with Tilly's character is the writers that have no clue what consistency is, much less how to create characters with established personalities. Since the characters tend to just have personality traits and behaviours as they are needed and THAT is what makes watching this insufferable.

    • @mollieandtheoldman
      @mollieandtheoldman  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I was in a leadership program several years ago, and there were people who just didn't have what it took to be a leader. There was one person in particular who wanted it more than anything, but they couldn't get their panic under control. This person behaved like the Tilly character, but on steroids, and I have a feeling this person would be diagnosed today as being on a 'spectrum'. However, this person made an excellent follower, unlike Tilly.
As for the characters' inconsistent personality traits, that's been running rampant in entertainment for a while now. The writers don't care what a character did in the previous episode, let alone the previous season. Of course, it doesn't matter because that character isn't a real character. They're just a tool to advance the plot. Sloppy and lazy writing. I'm looking forward to the day when competent writing makes a comeback. -Mollie

@@mollieandtheoldman Sure there are exceptions to anything, but I'm not convinced the leader statement to be true. There are many ways to lead but some ways may be less suited in some settings, but even in strict hierarchal one can find varying styles of leadership and not necessary better or worse. As mentioned, often the main issue (bar illness or other physical hindrances) is the inability to adapt to new settings. The writers of Discovery have no clue about the setting, as such the Tilly and frankly most characters on this travesty of a show, are out of place, not just because they fail to perform their role they inhabit, but they lack professionalism, as they are most of the time performing a job.
IN my experience people that act professionally, leaders or otherwise, don't need to assert their position or question the position of others. Everyone has a job to do and any professional will add to the group by doing their job. THAT is the main issue with the writing of Discovery, they are all unprofessional, which then creates this dissonance between the characters supposed role and their actions.
Its fine to have people act out or "have a bad day", but in Discovery everyone seems to having a bad day everyday and frankly if it wasn't for plot armour they wold have been dead in episode 1, because the writers could not make them competent if their lives dependent on it.

Ketraar, I'm not talking boardroom professionalism. I'm talking battlefield leadership. These are two very different things. -Mollie

Why would the Breen use environmental suits when walking around on their own ship? Wouldn't they just make the environment comfortable for themselves and take the suits off?

Soon our Discovery misery will be over. Good riddance. Though I worry that Kurtzman will double-down on Discovery and start weaving some of it's gawd awful concepts and methods into future Trek series. Where were the Trek franchise gate keepers all this time? Fail.

@@mollieandtheoldman Very good point! If I owned the IP, it would be a requirement that a series or movie could only be done under a lean budget. I think this would have the effect of prioritizing the quality of the writing. This requires focus and discipline, though. I'm beginning to think that this may be a generational issue with rare exceptions these days.

@@stopgeorge Nicholas Meyer said that art thrives on restrictions. Orson Welles said, "The enemy of art is the absence of limitation." There are various psychological theories about why this appears to be true. For example, somebody said, "Creativity is what happens when a mind encounters an obstacle." [It is an intriguing topic, and it would make a great Star Trek episode.]
