Michael Burnham Tells Pre-Warp Society to Keep Believing in Their Gods-Just No More Human Sacrifices

  • Season 5 Episode 6 of Star Trek Discovery covers a pre-warp society making human sacrifices to make it rain. The plot elements were eerily similar to TNG S03E04 Who Watches the Watchers, and Stargate Atlantis S01E06 Childhood's End. The command and crews of TNG and SGA would not have approved of Michael Burnham's handling of her situation. (CLIPS)

I hate Discovery so much. It’s such a waste of budget and actors. Think of how good an actual Star Trek show could have been with those resources given to a good showrunner and writing team.

The first 2 out of 3 seasons of Picard were the same. But for Season 3, a bunch of us (including me) petitioned to fire the writers and hire the Cobra Kai writers (a superb writing team with results that speak for themselves), and suddenly Season 3 of Picard was superb. The writers matter WAY more than the actors, as Season 1-2 of Picard sucked despite the presence of Stewart, De Lancie, Goldberg, Ryan, Spiner, Frakes, and more.

Season 3 of Picard was just as much garbage as seasons 1 and 2. The difference was the iconography was closer to real Star Trek. But the writing was absolutely on par w/ eating car batteries with a hand chopped off turning into a talking head yelling at people while the Titan was birthed from a nebula and the Enterprise D did its Millennium Falcon imitation. Writing IS important and season 3 of Picard showed us that even w/ more TNG actors, more crap writing lead to crap results.-- Old Man

@@mollieandtheoldman In STP Season 3, Picard and Beverly conspire to commit murder, Beverly commits murder, Beverly runs guns (with her son) to both sides in a military conflict, Worf stabs several people in the back and kills them, Worf supervises an underling as she tortures someone, Starfleet and the Federation conduct torture, Riker scorns Picard and Data, Troi slyly ignores her patient and laughs at him behind his back. STP Season 3 is toxic anti-Trek sewage.

Secret Hideout and Bad Robot lack the talent to tell any stories that aren't contradictory or just plain stupid.

I would say the TNG version is the best because it's a whole episode about interference, religious superstition. Stargate is better, but it's also a little superficial.
Discovery seems to be a bunch of little quips and not understanding or giving much care or thought to anything. But it's better than most of the other Discovery episodes.

This is such a great video! Thank you both so much for making it. It really highlights the low quality of STD. I wonder why the writers and actress choose to make Adira (I think that is the Trill’s name) sound like she is a 10-year-old. That opening sequence is painful to watch as she is trying to describe the planet. Also, I think your theory from the last review about how the writers hate till he might be true. Notice how they forced the actress to say “massive” in her dialogue, describing the responsibility of having technology. That was unkind to say the least.

I'm loathe to quote Rick Berman after he what he did with Enterprise, but his critique of NuTrek is spot on. “Nothing but action and fantasy with a little bit of Star Trek thrown in.”

"We've got lights!". ... Umm.... seriously?! Imagine Picard saying that? Hmm... Compare that to "There are...four...lights!"

Mikey Spock says "Ok, so the Prime Directive will be a concern for us too." AS IF! As soon as she said that line I laughed.
And the idea that you can implant technology in your body by just downloading it via the transporter. This coupled with the magical phasers and instant transporters that don't seem to need any external power source... So glad this is the last season of Discovery.

I love Legacy Trek, the writing the actors, the lessons. I miss _that._ I miss when Star Trek was TOS TNG Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. I also love Stargate. SG1 was prefect, and doesn’t need a reboot in the slightest. No actor can out sass O’Neil. 😂 Kurtzman Trek is *not* Star Trek. It’s this bland horrible imitation of a once beloved franchise. And quite frankly I’m glad it’s ending. We need a studio that respects Trek.

"Who watches the watchers?" to me is one of the greatest Star Trek Episode ever. It has "inspired" parts of Star Trek Insurrection and The Orville's "Mad Idolatry" and now STD. While the original was so great that even the imitations became decent, none got any close to it.
And I was wondering: How can Burnham just tell those people to stop the sacrifices? Wouldn't that violate the Prime Directive? Can the Prime Directive make an exception to stop such horrible practices?
Remember when Picard almost refused to save Sarjenka's people, because it might violate the Prime Directive?
Then again, the Secret Hideouters didn't get what the prime directive (or any Star Trek lore for that matter) is about, so how can we expect them to ask that question.

The sacrifices were the DIRECT RESULT of prior interference, so the Prime Directive is a bit muddy. Same reason Picard was allowed to talk them out of worshiping him to prevent starting something that was the result of interference, Burnham should be clear to get them to stop killing themselves if it stems from interference. Also starfleet captains are well known for ignoring the prime directive in the cases of mass killing even without evidence of external interference (Landru, Eminar and Vendikar, Gamma Trianguli). In fact it's next gen that treats the prime directive badly in several cases (allowing extinctions because "it's the natural order" is not the point of the prime directive; The Orville actually does a better job explaining the prime directive without naming it than ST has ever done: th-cam.com/video/zJYCjayL8iY/w-d-xo.html).

A tricorder in the eye? One working "weather tower? How does one sprinkler help change the atmospheric composition enough to support humanoids?
Does Discovery have a science officer? Or do members of the crew take turns? Discretion, the prime directive and Michael Burnham are insoluble.
I still dislike how dark the sets are in this show. They need lights all right! 🤣
This and Major Grin's "Free Tilly" video go well together in critiquing this episode.
Good work, Mollie and the Old Man. 😀
