Why don't I ride a motorcycle? I tell my story here.
My story of learning to ride a motorcycle and why I'll never ride a Goldwing.
Is there a reason I am a pillion rider and not a front seat rider? Am I happy to be a passenger?

    My wife loves to ride pillion but has absolutely zero interest in riding herself. I've tried, but I know now to not push it and just be grateful that she's happy to at least ride pillion. When we first met she hated bikes (she works in life assurance dealing with death claims), so it's a minor miracle that I've even managed to get her on the back of one! I have a friend who recently tried his CBT. It was bought for him by his partner as he'd always wanted to give it a try as he'd never ridden a motorcycle before. But he just couldn't get on with riding a motorcycle, said there was too much going on all at once and he just didn't feel confident or comfortable at all. And he has a pilot's licence and flies regularly! I said a very similar thing to both of them - give it a try, but if you don't like it and don't WANT to persevere to try and gain some confidence, then riding a bike is not for you. Learning aside (we all have to start somewhere), a motorbike is not the place to be if you're feeling nervous or anxious.

    I think most who try to do it all too quickly often fail through nerves. You out really should do a couple of years riding untill you gain so much confidence you could ride without thinking about it. But if you try to do it all too quickly you won't have that confidence. Maybe getting another bike and spending that time riding for a 2 year period would get you through your test, but then look at pros and cons, such as do you really need to? Look at the expense? My wife has been riding since we first got married, her first bike was a Suzuki 50, then a Yamaha DT LC 125, this was back in 1982 onwards. Just recently she sold her Yamaha Bolt 950 as she hasn't used it in about 5 years as she has become too nervous. I think as you get older it does get harder to keep your confidence riding, knowing whether to ride or not is something only you will know.. Cheets

    As I was so scared witless as a pillion I took my bike test before I ever drove a car. As I recall the CBT was just being introduced but I just squeaked in before that. I spent many happy years pootling around on various bikes before I took my car test. They were just introducing the theory tests then and I just squeaked in with my car licence before having to do that too. My last bike was a ZZR600, I enjoyed the biking and the community around it but left it all really and gradually became a softy car driver. I do miss it sometimes when the sun's shining but the state of the roads makes me think maybe not...

    I’ve always been around motorbikes. My first hubby was a very longtime, confident motorcyclist and we clocked up loads of miles. I eventually took my own test and drove around on my own ER 500 for a couple of years but I really preferred being a pillion, never as confident and comfortable as he was. Second hubby is more a car man and I haven’t ridden for years. Daughter and her partner are big bike people and she does track days on some huge bikes. You have to have the natural confidence especially now a days. Cars, and people, are a lot faster!

    That was a nice tour and history lesson. Can't believe how green everything is in the UK, over here everything is a bit dry and a little colder as the start of June is the beginning of our winter, not that it gets really cold. I was listening to you mention the fuel and additives, in the UK most fuel is refined at the same refinery, so no matter what brand you get it is really all the same. Years back when I worked in Scotland I used to work for First Bus South East Scotland. I did a review on fuels that we used and also on whether Bio Diesel was worth swapping to. I contacted Scannie, Volvo and Denis on the use of Bio fuels in their engines. To cut a long story short I ended up having our area switch to Bio Diesel for a year to test it. The results were really good that First Bus UK made the switch too.. I got no recognition for it, but everyone knew it was me..that's my wee claim to fame. Anyhoo, another good video, catch up with you guys again in the next one.

    I use E0 fuel all the time here in France even though some of my bikes will run on E10. The reason being that E0 petrol has a higher calorific value than E10 which results in higher MPG. In the UK Esso is still available ethanol free in certain areas, even though by law like France it must be marked up as E5.

    Driving in the USA on vacation our rental SUV was an E95 engine, and E95 fuel was one dollar cheaper and the SUV returned 21 in stead of 22 mpg. My 2013 2nd Gen GL1800 ran with no difference when on E10. My better insisted that a Blue Tour DCT looked beautiful, so in October we swapped, and the DCT runs with no problem on E10.

    I use E5 in my older 90's bikes (one is carbs) and E10 in the newer ones. I don't why people say supermarket E10 is bad. Tesco, for example, always used to be supplied fuel by esso. Supermarket fuel will come out of a major brands refinery. Why would they bother producing a lower quality fuel for supermarkets?

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Trevor, thanks for your comment. Maria at Honda suggested the supermarket fuel doesn't have the additives and/or detergents that branded fuel does - sorry, I forget to mention that in my video commentary. I've just done a quick search and the articles I've seen seem to concur. It appears the basic fuel is the same but branded petrol has more stuff put into it. www.fuelcardservices.com/why-is-supermarket-fuel-cheaper-than-branded-petrol/ www.rightfuelcard.co.uk/news/supermarket-fuel-vs-branded-which-is-best-for-my-fleet I haven't the faintest idea what this means to 'real world' motoring as opposed to theoretical and hypothetical situations but it's good to hear so many people are happy putting E10 in their bikes. Thanks.

      @fbglife thanks for the links, I'm still not convinced. The price difference now is not that great anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same stuff. Major brands will need a reason to justify a slightly higher price. I certainly won't be put off using supermarket fuel, there doesn't seem to be anything solid in those articles to say otherwise. Each to their own. 🙂

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's fair enough. It seems there's not a lot of transparency around what's in those fuels (understandable to a degree I suppose) and it leaves us all to make up our own minds. Like you say, each to their own.

    In your area, are you able to find pure gas or ethanol free gas? In Texas you can find it scattered around. We also have this certification at select gas stations called top tier gas and they are tested often. Another option is to get your gas at new brand name station. In my area the most common gas has 10 percent ethanol in all three grades. The grades I’m talking about are regular mid grade and super.

    • @fbglife

      I'm not aware of any ethanol-free petrol being available anywhere, other than maybe specialist motorsport type sellers. We typically have 3 choices of fuel at UK stations: E10, E5 & diesel. When I was a boy we had 2 star, 3 star, 4 star and even 5 star petrol. Those were the days :)

  • @biker_dan
    @biker_dan หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think the only difference if any between E10 and E5 would be seen on a dyno if you were measuring it on performance. But to be honest the lines of 99 percent of riders wouldn't notice any difference . The only problem ethanol can cause is a speed up of deterioration on plastic and rubber parts on the fuel system, but that's about it really. I think in the UK as well as here in Australia it has been tested and found that as long as you keep to a max of 10 percent ethanol it won't do any damage to your vehicle. Manufacturers spend millions testing engines with a variety of fuels, so if Honda recommends the E10 then it won't do any harm. Don't believe the hype people spread about how bad E10 is, it is all nonsense and people pass the info on without knowing the truth.

From what I have read, they have a low centre of gravity, with the motor being slung low down, even the petrol tank is under the seat. So, I can understand their feeling of ease to handle. I always fancied a Kawasaki 900 Z1 or a Suzuki GT750 "Kettle" which I did get to ride back in 1986, but just around the block. I have always "Loved" Motorcycles, especially those from Japan in the 70's. But my eyes now preclude me from riding again. I feel like a "Bird" with its "Wings Clipped"

    I ride a 2009 gl1800 Goldwing 1999 gl1500 Goldwing. I put £100,000 miles a year on my bike. How many miles do you ride and what year is yours?

    I’m on my third goldwing , all three have been really reliable. My current one is an 2008 and I’ve put on 85000 miles on it with no problems ! But I’ve heard of a few that had ECU issues! Sounds like they have you fixed up ! 👍

      I was talking yesterday to the tech who fixed our bike last year and he said he'll never forget us or our bike because of the rarity of the injector problem. He has been a bike mechanic for a total of 50 years and a Honda dealership mechanic for the last 30 and he reiterated that he'd never before seen an injector fail on a Honda. Not that there would have been injectors on Honda 50 years ago....

      Do you find your interferes with your hand/wrist during slow speed riding? I bought one to try and whilst I like it for cruising I find it sort of gets in the way for other riding. What are your thoughts on that?

    Hello to your new bike. Its a year since you bought the bike. Hope you're enjoying it. I don't wish to spoil anything. If the bike has done more than 10k. Make sure the suspension linkage is properly greased and the bolts waxed as they seize in. Exhaust must be removed to do this. Its impossible to do with the exhaust on. i know done lots of them. Also the alternator drive bearing can fail the covers prevent you hearing it. Ps a full service takes 21 hours if done properly . Dr Dave

      Thanks Dave, yes we are loving it! We get the bike serviced by Honda and a couple of days ago they did an inspection and said the suspension is all good. To be honest I dread the alternator failing! It looks like an expensive pain in the backside to fix.

    Great video guys!! I don't currently ride a GW ,owned an '81 1100 once and have loved em since the first in 1975!! Each one was beautiful and very intriguing to me and I never imagined more until the next one came out and then I'd dream about riding the new one and you know, there's something to be said for a bike that has kept my attention since the first one! The bike you have is as good as the new one, some ways better! Stay safe and keep riding !!

    Why would u ride a 20K bike in January on UK wet, potentially icy roads, with the dreaded bike killing salt the moron councils keep dumping on it. My wing never saw rain intentionally, I was gutted to get caught in a monsoon in Wales during the summer.
