  • Sarah recently had the opportunity to try the passenger seat on a 2018 + Honda Goldwing so she could compare it to the pillion position on our 2014 bike.
    What did she think of the comparative merits of backseat comfort on the old and the new? Watch this to find out!

    Great video guys!! I don't currently ride a GW ,owned an '81 1100 once and have loved em since the first in 1975!! Each one was beautiful and very intriguing to me and I never imagined more until the next one came out and then I'd dream about riding the new one and you know, there's something to be said for a bike that has kept my attention since the first one! The bike you have is as good as the new one, some ways better! Stay safe and keep riding !!

    New Subscriber... found you through your friend Phil. I have a 2023 Goldwing and I think they angled the pillion back rest a bit more as Honda listened to the complaints. Cheers from Texas!

    Pre 2018 are the best for touring. Comfort and looks espially, new tech in a full tour bike would sell like hot cakes, Honda upgraded the ST to ST1800, , great review too….🇬🇧👍

      Thanks Gary. Yes, my perfect bike right now would be this Goldwing paired with the tech and engineering of the 'new' Goldwing.

    We have just swapped our white 2nd Gen GL1800 for a 22 plate DCT. I am 6ft 8ins tall and she is 5ft 10ins tall. First thing to go was the Honda Screen. I fitted a Puig taller/wider screen and the boss told me I could have a backrest as long as it can be taken off when pillion riding. Noticed the 19 plate Wing had his screen in the down position (and it really is quite small) and had a backrest fitted when carrying a pillion. When we stop, I lean forwards, so that she can get off and on, I noticed the 19 rider did not move or assist Sarah to get off. Yes the 22 saddle is something else and in 2024 we are going to test it as we ride to the Black Forest. At least Johnny now rides with his vent open, but seems to rest two fingers on his brake lever?

    Thanks for sharing, certainly good to know about the pillion seat experience as it had been a question I was asking myself as well as my wife loves the current seat on our 2012. Guess it’s something you could also get used too as well and different screen heights might help the wind noise 😎 good review.

      You're welcome Stephen. When we were considering getting a 'new' touring bike we were disappointed by the lack of reviews, videos or commentary from the pillion's perspective so Sarah thought it would be good to offer at least a little thought from the back seat! :) We've gotta keep those wives comfortable......
      Do you have the standard screen on your 2012? Does your wife feel the wind around her helmet? I'm 6'2" and I find it VERY quiet and still behind the screen set at full height.

      @stephenmatthews1470 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I have the standard screen and no real issues with it,my wife finds it very calm with no major issues from the rear seat so all round very comfortable , I think as our screens are wider than the newer 2018> we get that little bit of extra protection ❤ I guess.

    I have owned 3 Goldwings, and if you want better wind controls especially for the passenger look at the Wind Wings for the mirrors and if you want total wind control go with the full set of Wind Wings

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for that. I must say that I have barely any issue with the wind up front, it's Sarah who feels the worst of it around her helmet. Do Wind Wings help with that helmet buffeting?

    Interesting video.
    Totally agree with Jonathan about the looks of the pre 18 model wing. You'll always know it's a Goldwing whereas I think the 18-on model looks like a Pan European but just a bit bigger. Still a lovely wing but just not as instantly recognisable. All the best to you both

      Sometimes when you flash past a bike coming in the opposite direction it's difficult to see what that bike was, but old Goldwings are instantly recognisable - you can see 'em a mile away!
      Phil has offered me a ride of his '19 bike and I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares for me.

      @@fbglife Absolutely, instantly know it's a wing. I'd be interested to see how you find the 19 model. Looking forward to the video. 👍

    our wing is a 21 plate and when Honda upgraded the trunk in 20-21 they also altered the back rest angle as well as complaints about
    original trunk size there had been complaints about the backrest shape.
    What i had to relearn was the feel of the brakes on the DCT when come to a stop, i never noticed an issue riding solo, but two up we’ve clashed helmets just at the point of stopping the bike. Having read up about the braking system it does some very sophisticated and it does some really fancy brake biasing depending on how you’ve set the bike up. ( God hope it makes some sense ) so as i applied front brake only it would grab at the moment of last rotation . Totally my fault DCT anxiety and bad habits brought over from my many years of manual clutch bikes. Cracked the method now and i glide to a stop. ( most times 😅😅😅😅)

      @fbglife  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, I knew about the trunk but I did not know about the backrest. I would have thought that with all the years of experience Honda have of building and selling 'the ultimate touring bike' they wouldn't have made those errors in the first 2018 design.

      @@fbglifeyes very true, it’s a fantastic piece of engineering, but it’s like they lost the book on the stuff that was correct on previous generation wings and how to scale it down to suit the the body shape. Trunk to small, rake of back rest incorrect and the passenger hand grabs you couldn’t get your hands around. Thankfully all corrected on the 20-21 onwards models.

      I had a 2018 model before my current 2021 model, my wife says the 2021 is more comfortable than the 2018 mainly due to the backrest difference.

    Braver than me... I went pillion once when I was younger and I was so petrified I took my m/c test so I could ride my own bikes. Many years later when I got together with my partner he had to pass his m/c test as he was too scared to get on the back of mine...🤣

      No, I've not ridden it yet. Phil has offered to let me try his though. Even if I prefer riding the 'new' Goldwing I don't think Sarah would countenance changing from her comfortable 'Care Bear' seat! :)
