  • Lack of thought lead to some moments of panic ahead of a weekend trip. How did we flatten our battery? It's very easy when you know how! Lessons learned...

    You did something that a lot of bikers have done, only you admitted it on camera. Its so easy to do. Good to see you both out again and enjoying the bike. Keeping a bike on charge is ok, if your garage has power in it. I have a council garage and I keep my fingers crossed every day that my bike starts up.

    I had a Garmin wired to the battery, so I'd soft turn the unit off, but it would still be drawing power. After 2.5 weeks the battery was almost flat and the bike wouldn't crank. Battery tender is your friend ;-)

      It surprised us how quickly the battery lost its charge. It's not as though we had the ignition on for hours, more like just a few minutes. I've not experienced that with other vehicles.

    Lovely video of the sun coming through the trees in the forest. We always stopped for a comfort break at Clumber Park when heading North up the A1 from the other side of Peterborough. Haven’t been up that way for a few years & you’ve made me want to visit again! Looking forward to seeing where you went on the weekend trip.

    Good video, boss. Every dealer selling a Goldwing, these days, must bring up this issue. The 6th Gen Wing eats voltage while resting. if you add a power distribution box for future LED add on, it eats a bit more. The new Indians are the same. Mine is plugged it, if I don't ride more then 2-3 days. I use Hulkman smart trickle charger. Works great. Also, many new wing owners have battery not lasting that long. I replaced mine after almost 3 years on a 2020 DCT Tour.

    Yes also been there, anything less than about 11.8 volts and nothing on the starter. Now have it on a charging tender permanently and i think the battery is about 5 years old and never misses a beat....good video and camera seems fine 😊

    Just be careful. I had a similar problem with my Wing. only to one day start it wheel her out of the garage. Turn her off to get my riding gear on. Went to start he again and nothing! would do not even do the start up sequence. I thought ? main fuse but no the battery had just upped and died on me. Spoke to a bike electrician and he said that the wing takes so much power to crank over that if even one of the cells in the Battery is a bit broken it will kill the battery when starting. So new battery later and all if fine.

    If you use the accessory setting and not the on position, it will turn off the headlights saving a lot of battery that gets used to power the headlights.

    I think one o& the first things I was ever told was don’t ever leave the ignition on without the engine running. A strange mistake to make for anybody.

    nice little video - I keep all my bikes on trickle chargers - although I am surprised that the small amount of activity you went through prepping would cause the battery to lose so much power it wouldn't crank over = I'm heading down near clumber park on Thursday evening - what road did you take through the park with that fancy gateway at the end? was that lime tree avenue?

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was surprised too - mine is kept on a trickle charger too. But I've learned from it!
      Yes, that's Lime Tree Avenue heading West (B6034) to East (A614)

    Always keep the battery on a trickle charger when not in use. I keep mine on a Maypole auto trickle charger. These bikes consume power when not in use. And don't forget when you turn the ignition on you've got two 55w headlights and several 5w rear lights burning. That's why your battery drained. Two cranks wouldn't on their own cause the battery to drain. Reversing uses a fair bit of power too. When I'm working on bike which may involve turning the ignition on and off, and I often have the radio on, I keep the trickle charger connected.

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. I keep the bike on a trickle charger when it's sitting in the garage but those 2 starts plus one short reverse & sitting with ignition on for 15 minutes was enough to trip me up this time. I will be way more attentive in future!

    My parking space in my Wing shop has a permanent Battery Tender that I can just connect every time the bike wont be used. Of course I ride mine almost every day. I live in the Southern part of the US where winters are warm enough to ride all year. Be safe, have fun.

    • @fbglife

      Mine is plugged in to a battery tender when it's parked up but I unplugged it to fiddle around with it for a short while and I just didn't think about what I was doing! Won't make that mistake again :)

    The Goldwing uses a lot of battery power due to the electric system. The biggest use is using reverse gear as it is using the starter, so if you reverse the bike in at night that's a drain on the battery.
    I have a smart charger that I use, it will charge the battery or top it up, then it keeps it in a fully charged state for your next ride. .
    I bought a Victorian smart charger, it connects to a phone app and allows you to see what state the battery is in. In advanced mode you can have it recondition the battery by discharging then fully charging again, great if your battery is getting old.
    A new battery is good especially a gel. But even on a new one use a smart charger to keep it at 100 percent.
    Question. How do you guys set up your mics on one video? Can you show us your setup?
    Keep the videos coming, I might have one soon when I get my new chin mount.
    Cheers

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I've rather taken the reverse gear for granted. I know it will use a lot of power but I've tended to use it just as freely as I would the reverse gear on the car.
      I use trickle chargers on both bikes but they are cheap Oxford ones and the display on both of them has gone screwy. Time to upgrade maybe.
      We'll make a tech video to show our setup one day but in the meantime here's a brief explanation:
      There's no such thing as a perfect vlogging camera and each one will have compromises somewhere. GoPro (and the most recent DJI) seem to have the ultimate picture quality but they have fairly short battery life and they don't record sound easily, needing a separate purchase of an external mic adaptor. I also don't kike the bulkiness of that format of camera.
      We decided to buy Drift Ghosts because of their excellent battery life and because they both support external mics straight out of the box - we use the spare 'button' microphones that came with out Sena headsets, tucked into our helmets' cheek pads. Picture quality of the Drifts isn't up with the very best but, for us, convenience, comfort and sound quality trumps that. We tried using just one camera with sound and adding a sound recorder + mic to Sarah's helmet and jacket pocket but it really was a pain.
      So we each have our own camera recording our own voice - our own little self-contained audio/visual setup attached to our respective helmets! We sync the recording with a hand clap at the start of each session and then I upload both sets of image/sound files to the PC. It's quite a lengthy process to edit the sound and video files together (certainly not a case of jump off the bike, upload files to TH-cam and call it a day!) but I do really enjoy the editing processes.
      The next stage is to try to capture more bike and road noise using a sound recorder and mic mounted, erm, somewhere. Early attempts have resulted in the mic picking up way too much wind noise or not enough engine noise but I'll keep trying to find a solution and when I do I'll add that noise as an extra sound file in the edit:)
      Hopefully all that makes sense but if you have other questions please do ask me Dan. Thanks again for watching!

      @@fbglife thanks for that. Me and the missus both have Sena's and while we use the intercom I was thinking of tucking the go pro mic in the helmet at a place where it would pick up my voice as well as her coming through the headphones, but once the chin mount I ordered comes I will give it a try.
      Thanks again

      Yes, no chance of identifying that one. Unless you see him wrapped around a tree or in a ditch somewhere - worse still embedded in some poor oncoming car's windscreen.
