  • Join us on our first proper ride out on our 2014 Honda Goldwing. We take 2 days to ride from our home in Nottinghamshire, England to Portnalong on the Isle of Skye via Balloch, Loch Lomond, the magnificent Trossachs, Spean Bridge and Eilean Donan castle.
    In this video we briefly mention the 'tech issues' we'd experienced in getting started on our touring adventures but we didn't go into details. We have now got (almost!) everything fixed and, rather than bore the viewers of this video with a long list of negativity, we thought we'd save the topic until a future video when we can explain the difficulties and, at the same time, give our solutions. Thanks for watching, and stay tuned....

    Well you did a small one to Scotland we are going there next year. About dropping the bike incident it happens one minute your riding slow and not thinking about the direction your going and change your mind at slow speed and down you go it’s happened to hundreds of bike riders, but at least you admitted it and show other riders how simple it is for to happen. Safe ridding 👍🇮🇪

    Nice trip, I owned a 1500 for a number of years and like all wings they are a little quirky at low speed. Wings are like you are discovering, a joy to ride at speeds above 20mph, this is due to their very low centre of gravity, but at low speed the mass of the bike comes out to play. A few tips if you don't mind the offer, at low speed forget about covering the front brake, as you probably know both front and rear brakes are linked so you only need to cover the back brake this will apply the front and rear brakes together in a ratio conducive with slowing the machine and limiting fork dive. There is a best way to pick up a large M/C that is very easy and means that you will not injure yourself in the process, you can find loads of TH-cam content on the subject, its worth learning and practicing. And finally, any motorcycle can be maneuvered at low speed, there is a technique to it, again there is a load of content on the subject to watch, find yourself a big patch of open tarmac to practice on and practice until it becomes second nature. once you have got the low speed stuff down you will find that you are no longer nervous about the bike. There is a very active Goldwing community online do a little searching and have a look, they are full of advice and tips. Most of all, enjoy your Wing, it's the best bike you will ever ride, it even keeps you reasonably dry too. -John

      @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comment John.
      And I don't mind your advice in the slightest - I am VERY happy to listen to and learn from more experience people. I have been using the front brake less and less but it helps to read comments like yours because it reinforces in my mind what is the right thing (and what is the wrong thing) to do. Thank you.

    West coast Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 is some of the best uk touring in my opinion definitely has a special place. Don’t worry most big bike riders have dropped it once before. Last year on are isles of white tour I Dropped my k1600GA at a stop and I missed placed my foot in panic and we very slowly went down lucky no one hurt also no damage on the bike few, just hurt pride and a lessen to learn. I also found on the k1600 compared to my new bike r18 transcontinental the wait was high up compared to my r18 witch is a heavier bike than k1600 and GL but surprisingly feels lighter primarily due like the GL the wait is very low. Things I’ve learnt is don’t be rushed, plan and look ahead. Don’t try to change plan mid manuver change after. I’ve found I’ve been enjoying my trips / tours more on r18 with methodical ridding and appreciate it the experience and the locations more. Some of my friends have been very suprised buy it when they have tried big tourers. But subjective depends on type of ridding you enjoy and sute. Good vid nice to see Scotland and to see you enjoying your new beast.

      Thank you so much for your comment Stevo. I'm finding that riding a large bike like the Goldwing is still 'proper' motorcycling but at the same time a very different kind of motorcycling! Like you say, planning is key. I am improving every time we go out - not fully there yet though!

    Remember the more you ride it the better you will get at the low speeds. I recommend a parking lot to get used to it at low speeds. Just don't be afraid to drop it. And as far as the headsets I have the same problem. Takes so much time to get them to connect when they work right. 🤣🤣🤣 Great video. And hello again from 🇺🇸

      Thanks Mo! I found this bike VERY easy to ride at 'normal' speeds but a real challenge at slow speeds. Things are improving though...

    Hello from South Carolina, USA. I’ve been enjoying your videos. I have a 2016 and ride two up 95% of the time. As far as the connectivity you may want to consider hard wired headsets. Eliminates the charging every night. Just an option to consider. We prefer the simplicity.

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Bill, thank you for the message. We did consider wired headsets but were shocked at the price of them by the time they get to the UK. We've settled (eventually!) on a pair of Sena bluetooth headsdets that are working well enough right now. Ideally we'd have liked to be able to try wired headsets and bluetooth ones alongside each other for comparison before we purchased either but sadly that's not possible.
      How do you find it with both of you being wired to the bike all the time? Do you ever forget that you're tethered or is it all second nature now?

  • @keithsimpson
    @keithsimpson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done you two. We did the North Coast 500 a few months ago, my wife's first long strip on our Goldwing. Just about all bikers dislike the Motorways so we avoided them when we could and glad we did fantastic scenery brilliant. Would advise coming back through the Cairngorms. Ride safe and enjoy. Keith

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Keith. the NC500 is on our list of rides to complete - how was it on the Goldwing? Some of the roads (tracks?) seem quite small and twisty.
      When we eventually edit and upload part 2 of this trip you'll se that we cam back through the Cairngorms but also that the weather made it a bit of a struggle. Would love to do it calm weather though!

    • @keithsimpson
      @keithsimpson ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fbglife Yeah it's not very nice in bad weather, but that's Scotland for you. Yes quite a few single track roads with passings places but not a problem at all. I found it easier putting both feet down when stopping with a pillion on the back. You'll get used to wing the more you ride it. Can't get a better bike for two up.

    Hi Guys, I have a 2005 Honda Goldwing GL1800, (GL stands for Gold Line), I love the bike but it is a handful at low speeds. As you suggested it will get easier over time. @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bob, thanks for your comment.
      It's a 2014 bike chosen because there wasn't a lot of choice! I wanted a (relatively) low mileage bike that hadn't been heavily modified, if at all. I didn't want a very old bike but couldn't afford a very young one :) This bike fitted the bill close enough for us so we bit the bullet and bought it.

    I've got a suzuki gsxs1000f 😁, great bike & performance is excallent. I also have a Yamaha FJR1300 😁, which I use for commuting to work & touring😁, also an excellent bike. I would love to bring my wife along with me when touring😍. But she just hasn't got any interest in being a pillion rider. How do I get her to get on the bike & join me on my adventures 🤔. 🇬🇧🇬🇧

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you got room for a third bike?! I wasn't itching to go bike touring as pillion until I sat on the back of a Goldwing. We must have sat on every bike there was at Motorcycle Live trying them out for two-up comfort and this was easily the only one I was ever going to go longer that an hour on (especially when I discovered it had heated seats!). I think Jonathan was initially crestfallen when I announced it was this bike or nothing but he's come round to it now...:)
      Spending hours and hours on a not very comfortable seat and having to hold on every time the rider accelerates, breaks or goes around a corner is miserable from a pillion point of view so it's all about comfort. Good gear is essential too, the most sound proof helmet I could find made a massive difference and I also enjoy planning the trip and finding places to stop at of interest so I feel part of it and not just a spare part propped on the back because my other half wants to go biking. Being amoung the mountains in Scotland and having them all around and above you was incredible, you just don't get that feeling in a car. Perhaps suggest a short journey along nice roads with a nice place to stay at the end and a romantic meal for two?! Sarah :)

    Don’t fret you will drop it. When that weight gets to a certain angle don’t fight it just let it drop. With passenger and added luggage weight it will add to the drop angle. There are videos on how to lift this beast. Don’t use the handlebars. These are not made to lift or strap this bike.th-cam.com/video/fr3rJgmlawE/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/m2MBD9A6IQc/w-d-xo.html are good ones to watch.
